Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Focusrite 2i2?
« on: July 02, 2016, 10:40:37 pm »
I just got a focusrite 2i2 and the sample rate was 48khz and everything was playing SLOOOOOWWW, so I changed it to 41khz and it fixed the issue. Why is that?

Sound Design / Re: How to extract the acapella from a song?
« on: July 01, 2016, 12:23:47 am »
Can't be done unless you have an instrumental version of it. (Phase cancellation)

Might be able to extract certain parts with EQ but definitely not how you'd want it to be and would only be able to do it if it was vocals over a bassline section or something.
Ok, i found an instrumental version of it, so what i need to do now ? ;D ???
I believe if you reverse the polarity of the instrumental it will phase cancel the instrumental version with the vocal version and the only thing that should be able to be heard IDEALLY is the vocals.

Would I put all 3 OSC through a phaser? Using massive and it seems I can only phase on osc at a time

Look up a xylophone being hit with a hard mallet, maybe a plastic mallet of some sort. That's the percussive side of it. It definitely sounds like a sample of a xylophone to me.

This sounds really good, I hope you're sending this out to some ears out there. You definitely have the idea of mixing. If I were you I would throw in more of a triplet feel in that second drop to switch things up. At 0:52 that kick pattern, I would keep that kick pattern going and fade it down and just put a glitch on everything so it sounds like it's going into the kick, then glitch it back out to where it sounds like it's coming back out of the kick. Almost like a heart beat effect.

I didn't see a thread for this so I decided to start one.

Who is your inspiration? What makes you want to make music today?

My inspiration is Flume. When I first heard his music I had no clue what EDM was or anything of the dance music realm. Later I met who became a good friend of mine today that introduced me to this music. I had given up on music (I planned to major in music after high school, but my percussion instructor kind of ruined it for me). Long-story short, I found "EDM" through a friend and him and I decided to start producing. He's currently out in LA right now about to start attending Icon Collective with a few of his new friends he met up there (they're fucking awesome producers. Already demoing shit, etc.)

ANYWAYS (I'm rambling) I found this genre of music and knew I had to be apart of it. I love Flume's sound. It's like his sound is exactly what I'm looking for with my own twist. He has some crazy little percussion breaks that I love. His chords, sounds he chooses, everything is truly incredible. It reminds me of myself when I was just tinkering around on an instrument back in band (I liked to hack as a percussionist, lol) finding some weird sounds on a instrument that were out of the ordinary. It was really fun just "making noise."

That's enough about myself as I felt I've already rambled around too much.

What about you guys? Who inspired you to produce today, what kind of background are you coming from?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / ASIO
« on: June 19, 2016, 01:57:11 am »
So I just recently switched from FL Studio to Ableton. Obviously I use the ASIO driver for lower latency, but I've come across the issue that it doesn't seem that Ableton has an auto-close function as FL Studio does to switch between YouTube and Ableton. Does anyone have a solution for this? Thanks in advance.

Sound Design / Drums and Percussion
« on: June 18, 2016, 10:23:34 pm »
So a little bit about myself, I'm a percussionist. I love drums, I've been working with drums since I was 11 years old. My one huge problem I've come across is I just don't know what to use for my drums and percussion sounds. I have a lot of mediocre samples, but they're just that. How do some of these big names get such a big percussive sound through just the means of a computer?
Not even just big names succeed with it, so it can't be anything more than what I have access to in the means of software.
Any point in the right direction would be a HUGE help. Thanks.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Creativity and Learning
« on: June 16, 2016, 10:13:21 pm »
Honestly, I've been struggling with staying creative because every time I open a project I just feel like there's something else to learn. I don't exactly always know where to look to learn whatever it is I need to learn and end up finding myself spending 5-6 hours on just getting 4 bars. I'm not asking for some magical feeding spoon, but where has everyone learned what they've learned? Some background on me I love Dubstep, Future Bass, Future and Deep house. All of which I want to make, but have no clue on where to obtain all the knowledge to be able to put my ideas behind a computer.
