Mixing/Mastering / Re: Let's talk clipping
« on: January 13, 2016, 04:35:41 pm »
If you want a good a example of clipping a master, listen to Audien's stuff. It's interesting cause you hear some distortion in the track, but it's hidden in the mids most of the time. I used to clip my master until I realized how harsh and different it can sound on certain PA's versus other ones. I don't recommend clipping the master, but if you do, make sure it's extremely slight like 0.1-0.3 db. Otherwise clipping individual channels before the master can be very useful if needed.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Are there any good mixing books you recommend?
« on: January 13, 2016, 04:25:21 pm »
It's not mentioned often, but 'Mixing Audio' by Roey Izhaki is a very in-depth book that breaks almost every aspect of mixing and effects into simple terms. It's also packed with audio examples for when the text and pictures don't do justice.

I second reading this book. I'm about halfway through it and HIGHLY recommend it. Personally I've learned so much about things I didn't even think about, like the bus flow of a mixing console for example. It also does a fantastic job in the beginning of providing a great mindset to have when you are mixing. You start to think of your mix as a three dimensional sound stage where parts are placed more purposefully than randomly!

R&A Graveyard / Live Performance Section

Even though it is a "producer's" forum, it'd be cool to see a section for "live production" where we can talk about live sets, how to run certain synth set ups, mixing multitracks in a live setting, etc...

Should win an award for how amazing it is! I played it from 3:18 on New Years and it was the craziest part of the whole set.  :o

For the song Cut the Kid, I think he had a friend record a bunch of slaps for him  :)

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Orchestral String Plugins

I've been looking everywhere for a plugin that has huge, vast sounding strings, but I'm never 100% sold on anything. What are your guys' go to string plugins?

Using a very fast decaying mod envelope on the global tune gives pluck sounds a percussive attack that can be super useful!

EDIT - Also using the one feature in wavetable edit that turns samples into wavetables

Hey glad you like the song :) Do you mean the quick synth arpeggio or the "pad"-like atmospheric sound? The latter is a sound called "Abandoned" from Omnisphere if I recall correctly.

The synth arpeggio!

It's not really a vocoder, but Morph 2 has elements of one and is similar to a talk box, which might be worth a try.

I heard most of the weird sounds in the Purpose album were literally just Bieber's voice manipulated and pitched up or down a shit ton. Like the flute sound in Where Are U Now is apparently just his voice, not entirely sure on that one though.

Sylenth and Massive are staples for me. Other than those it's fun to explore random synths you might not use on a regular basis! I'm diving into iZotope's Iris synth right now  :D

Sound Design / Lenno Shimmers!

I've been trying to make the little shimmer type of fx similar to the beginning of this beautiful Lenno track, but I haven't been able to get very close. If anyone has any suggestions, especially making something like that in Diva, it'd be so helpful!
