Do you use Ableton by chance?

I use Yahama HS7s and I love them so much! I used to use the smaller 5-inch monitors, but if I had to recommend anything I'd say try and save a bit to get some of the larger monitors like the HS7s or the Rokit 8s. It makes a big difference with the low end!

HS8 would probably be better if you don't have a sub

Would have gotten them if they fit in my room  :)

You Might Like... / What Producers Do You Want to See Collaborate?
« on: January 25, 2016, 04:46:43 pm »
Not sure if there's a better place for this, but name two producers you'd love to see make a track together and then give a reason why if you want to!

I think a Cashmere Cat/Wave Racer collab would be so tight. Both of those guys have such a developed sound it'd be awesome to see a blend of both their styles.

Sound Design / Re: Snares

My snares are usually layers of a few different samples. Most of the time it's a punchy transient in the low end, a clap in the mids, and white noise or a hi-hat on top!

Sound Design / Re: Toms processing

Real toms are very resonant at certain frequencies (Floor toms in the low mids and rack toms in the high mids). They can also have a ton of sustain. Usually a mix of EQ, to bring up the punchy frequencies, followed by compression and a gate to cut the sustain will help them stand out in the mix better!

Patience

Sometimes you have to work through disinclination and wait for inspiration to come

Mixing/Mastering / Compression in Anticipation of the Master
« on: January 24, 2016, 09:46:57 pm »
I'm not well versed in this at all, but basically what I want to do with my mixes is be able to generally level off every channel that with compression so the mix is 'flatter' and averaged out dynamically before going through a mastering chain. What's been happening with my mixes previously is they're very dynamic but nowhere near a commercial level, so when I get to mastering I end up running a multiband compressor and maximizer extremely hard to compensate for this. Is RMS compression the best way to go about this? What do you guys do to compress during a mix down?

Definitely one of the most godly arps around! Thanks Ninth Parallel!  ;D

I'll throw on a Freq Analyzer to see what's happening level wise with the mix. Then I'll do a "rough" master with a multiband compressor and maximizer to see what the mix sounds like after being compressed and limited, but I turn those off when I'm actually mixing.

These guys are really good and pretty underrated I think. A lot of really good tutorials get drown out by people who don't know what they're doing trying to make dubstep sounds sadly.

There was a guy named Lobster Samples on youtube who was very good but I just saw he deleted his account  :'(

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Spicy, interesting chords
« on: January 15, 2016, 06:09:16 pm »
Non-diatonic chords can be really cool if you use them correctly for example taking a diatonic triad and adding a non-diatonic 7th over it (ex. I- maj 7). And then you can further it by placing tensions over top. The key is context in the song. Most chords like that sound terrible out of context.  :D

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Melodyne Studio vs. Editor
« on: January 14, 2016, 05:02:12 am »
So Celemony just released Melodyne 4 just as I was about to purchase the old version. Does anyone who has it know what the difference is between the "studio" and "editor" versions? One is way more expensive and I'm wondering if it's necessary for basic vocal edits  :)
