Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Plugin Similar To FL's Blur
« on: September 19, 2017, 03:57:20 am »
Does anyone know of any plugin for OSX that does something similar to this? I want something that can smear very obviously separated notes together in a more transparent way than reverb.

Sound Design / Madeon Kick Processing
« on: August 16, 2017, 11:09:34 pm »
I've always been impressed with Madeon's drums, specifically his kick sounds. Whenever I process my own kicks, I pretty regularly use some of his own samples I have as a reference. There are a couple different things about his samples that I've noticed but have never been able to reproduce, and so I'm wondering if anyone else has any thoughts as to how I can achieve a similar result.

The first thing is his transients. Compared to other kick samples, his transients are ridiculously fast and snappy, so much so that the sub frequencies of the kick hit almost simultaneously to the top end. Here's a screenshot as an example:

I'm assuming a transient shaper is what's causing the 'snappiness', but whenever I use one (I'm using NI's shaper) on my own samples it ends up changing the tonality of the kick drum in a really undesirable way.

The other thing is the frequency response of the sample. What's different from a lot of kicks I use, is his aren't peaking at any one frequency nearly as much as mine do. Example:

With frequency response, my question is how can I reduce peaks in the low end in the most transparent way possible?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Saving Presets in Serum Question
« on: March 16, 2017, 07:54:24 pm »
I'm currently trying to organize all my Serum folders to clean up my flow a little. I feel like there have been times I've opened presets and the Noise OSC files/Wavetables have been saved to that specific preset.

Does anyone know if this is possible and how to do it? Or am I imagining things?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Kick Samples?
« on: November 28, 2016, 02:37:37 pm »
I'm looking for sample packs where the majority of the kicks peak very very low around 47-50hz. Most of the samples I have peak much higher which sucks, because low kicks sound insane. If you know any really good packs let me know, and also, if you have any good methods for tuning kicks lower without losing quality in the audio, that would be incredibly helpful.

Sound Design / Re: Bass House (Ghastly/Jauz Style)
« on: October 01, 2016, 02:05:55 am »
This topic should definitely be super active. Bass House is an awesome genre, and personally, I'm having a ton of fun working on a preset pack based on Jauz/Ghastly sounds for Serum right now. So far what I've discovered in Serum at least is a lot of the sounds you think are complex are actually quite simple. Mussar was explaining it pretty well. The majority of Bass House sounds use FM to some degree.

In Serum specifically, I've been utilizing the Sub OSC as a sine wave to provide a steady low end to the sound as everything else is being modulated heavily. Then I use either two, simple waveforms with FM if I want a screechy Jauz bass or two, complex, digital wavetables for a more wobbly Oliver Heldens style bass. To create movement, I've been modulating either a highpass or lowpass filter with an LFO and using that same LFO for any kind of wavetable shaping.

Here's an example of the way I normally make Bass House style sounds in Serum:

This sound is literally all sine waves and I modulated everything with the same LFO. There's a sub OSC, body (OSC A), and OSC B which has no volume but is FM'd with A to generate harmonics. OSC A is then running through the highpass filter that creates more of a wobble.

Anyone know what's happening with the lead sound in this song? Comes in at 0:16

Any advice at all would be really helpful!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / File Organization
« on: August 15, 2016, 04:14:06 pm »
Hey guys! I wanted to get some advice and start a topic on how you all organize and manage your files, sample libraries, and project files. I've gone through several iterations of organizational structure, but recently, my latest attempt has gotten really messy and I want to try and simplify it.

Explaining or posting pictures of the way I have my computer set up would be more confusing than anything so I'd love to see if anyone else has got a system they're really happy with.

Sound Design / Re: How do you make this FX sound? (Flume)
« on: August 12, 2016, 06:34:09 pm »
That's a super weird sound haha. I tried using white noise and modulating a highly resonant lowpass filter with an LFO. I think combining that with a some automated eq changes and a phaser gets you pretty close.

A lot of the tone you get out of a pitched vocal comes from the formant shifting of the sample. So if you pitch something down an octave and adjust the formants of the sound, you can retain a ton of the spectrum that wouldn't be there otherwise. Most vocal processors will have this available.

It really depends on the key of the song, if the note is B and it's B min than that would have sounded good, so you might be in G#m maybe E... literally all depends on the key.

EDIT: You could also just try every note in B maj and min to see what sounds good, at least one note in one of those scales should sound good.

Now I'm just waiting for them to add Nexus or Omnisphere.

I can see the Spectrasonics guys being cool with monthly payments, not so sure about Refx though!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Help finding a plugin?
« on: August 01, 2016, 05:33:38 pm »
I remember awhile back someone talking about a plugin that puts transients slightly out of phase to give a cool 'haywyre' effect to sounds, but I can't find it anymore! Anyone have a link?

Sounds like a vocal chop to me

He also uses borne's MIDI translator pro, and created custom MIDI controls that allow him to fluidly drag and drop tracks into Ableton without much effort.
