Sounds like an FM kind of sound or wave table with some weird phaser/flanger effects going on. I would probably mess around with Serum to get something similar!

GhostDad uses Max to sync audio with his own visuals and video stuff

Yeah, that's why they're referring to the sample company Audentity.

And by from the synth, do you mean the loops and sounds from the actual sampler, or do you mean they created vocal chops using the plugin and uploaded those? Because if they're utilizing the plugin the way it's intended and creating musical vocal chops, there's nothing wrong with it - they created something unique with the idea.

If they're just pulling the sounds straight, without processing or alteration, that's a different issue.

A good chunk of them were just presets from the synth which is where I was like uhmmmmmm...

I was just browsing around on Splice and saw a vocal chops pack from this label 'Audentity.' Literally everything in that pack is just from Output's Exhale synth. Technically it's not copyright, but that's so low. Like if you're saying you're a sample company, make your own stuff from scratch. Idk.... that just gets on my nerves.

Mixing/Mastering / Mixing For Loudness
« on: May 19, 2016, 01:30:13 am »
I'm starting to learn that if you want denser songs to be loud, it needs to be mixed for it not overly compressed and limited during mastering. How do you go about making a dense mix loud? Is it compressing every signal or are the levels of everything more important?

Most of the tonality of that pad is coming from the chords. Other than that it's probably a low passed saw with maybe an FM type waveform that has lots of upper harmonics. Look up how to make the pad from I Remember and you'll get it!

Mixing/Mastering / Compressor Attack/Release Chart
« on: May 15, 2016, 10:30:26 pm »
I don't know about you guys, but I always get very confused when setting my attack and release times with compressors, especially when whatever I'm compressing doesn't have noticeable transients. Quick search found this super useful chart I thought I'd share that describes what different attack and release values actually do to the signal!

Mixing/Mastering / Re: How Do People Master Albums?
« on: May 15, 2016, 12:21:17 pm »
If you're doing in the box mastering, with say Ozone for example, you'd probably import the whole album into an instance of Ozone as well as one or two reference tracks you or your client really like and think are a good sonic match to the tracks being mastered. Then you find what you think is the best overall mix in the album already, something that represents the album's style more than anything else, and master that one first. When that first track is done, it becomes much easier to master to a similar sonic character as the first one and make all the pre-masters sound like one cohesive piece. I'm no mastering engineer, but at school this was how I learned lots of people do it. :)

You could always try e-mailing the artist? Won't have much luck with pop stars, but smaller bands might send you stems.

I use Ableton Live and love it to death! That being said, I would recommend it or FL over anything else. If you're leaning toward Ableton make sure to give it some time, because it really has way more functionality than what you think is on the surface. I've been using it for 6 years and am still finding extremely useful features in it! :)

piggybacking off of this, i have a stupid question. i've never used an external audio interface, just the built-in soundcard on my pc. is there that much of a difference in sound quality between the two, or are interfaces more for recording stuff?

There's some interesting stuff I was reading a couple weeks ago about sound cards, but more about how they relate to converting analog signal to digital. A lot of mastering engineers avoid clocking and jitter issues when working in the digital domain by investing in an external DAC which can be more beneficial in that sort of context than using a computer's built in sound card which can introduce a noticeable noise floor. Doesn't really apply to interfaces though..

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Ableton help
« on: April 30, 2016, 06:33:23 pm »
It will try and place warp markers to what it thinks is the correct BPM, but most of the time Ableton gets it wrong. You can put a single warp marker at the beginning of the track, right-click on the marker, and select "Warp From Here (Straight)." This deletes every other warp marker, and should get you pretty close to the original tempo of the song. Then you can manually enter the tempo (say from 128.05 to 128 if it's a house track)!
