What in the world is this lead sound in 'The Thrill' by Nero? I know it's heavily processed and distorted, but what synth did they likely use?

You could get a free trial on Splice and try to find an acapella that would fit the track

An algorithmic synth that randomly generates sounds based on what parameters you set beforehand. Like minecraft, but for sound design.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mastering with the kick near 0 dB

There's no set gain levels for tracks, it's mostly what you think sounds best for your mix. I usually mix pretty loud near 0 and then pull the master way down before it goes through my mastering chain so I have enough headroom!

Reading the user manuals  :)

Asked this a while back.. 8dio is a little more expensive but has some great strings.

Pitch modulation with a very fast decay too. You can layer it with a flutey kind of synth sound and it might be pretty cool!

Did this just happen? I had no idea but this totally rules. Now I can process my Massive patches through Serum  8)

and then add a chorus after that with a 35-45% dry/wet. That really twists the high end in a nice way.
^^Going off this...

Adding a chorus can create more stereo width without even panning the sound itself. I like to have the dry/wet closer to 5-10% with the rate not too fast or slow, and then have the depth at a very high value like 80-90%! It gives the saw a lot of color without taking away from the original signal too much!

Mixing/Mastering / Question about a track's levels..
« on: February 02, 2016, 05:32:50 pm »
I was analyzing a bunch of tracks today, and right away when I started looking at Okay by Madeon, I noticed the waveform looked like its peaks were at -0.5 to -0.7 db or so. The weird thing is the track volume was actually peaking at 2.79 db. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is that an example of soft clipping the master? How would you actually do something like that if you were using a limiter towards the end of your mastering chain?

Madeon. My style is totally different, but I'm more curious about what he's like in the studio over anyone else!

What's the difference between using an imager or a mid/side EQ to make anything below around 100hz mono? Does the EQ just have more control?

If you want to widen the stereo spread of a sound in Ableton, use the utility effect and adjust the width percentage. Or you can put the synth in an instrument rack, duplicate it, and then pan both to different sides. The movement is coming from him automating the volume, which you can do similarly by automating the gain on the utility effect, or volume envelope on the midi clip itself!

drop @ ~1:40

How do you make his vowel sounds? I can get close to this in Massive with double bandpasses and automation, but there are always background harmonics/noise so it isn't clean.

Thanks :)

This Virtual Riot tutorial on Serum is a good place to start. He hangs around with Must Die and I'm pretty confident both of them are using Serum much more frequently nowadays! A lot of the information on filter automation and effects processing can be applied to massive as well.

Sound Design / FM Synthesis
« on: January 26, 2016, 11:07:20 pm »
Seems like an important topic to cover with other producers. Does anyone have any cool tips or resources to go about using an FM synth like FM8? I mess around but am very clueless and useless with it.

The only tip I have is you can take a sine wave with an inharmonic ratio, modulate it's amp envelope with a very quick attack and decay, and it'll sound like a percussive marimba type sound.  ;D
