Sound Design / Re: Pad Design Thread
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:09:38 am »
Paulstretch and Valhalla Shimmer are my go-to methods for making cool ambient pads!
What does Paulstretch do? Can you elaborate on that? I've never heard of that synth before :0

1. Keep practicing, experimenting, reading and watching tutorials
2. Learn 1 or 2 synths by heart. Bests are sylenth, serum, massive and harmor.
3. Pick up playing an instrument.
4. Talk to other producers who are more experienced and ask for proper feedback.
5. Don't limit yourself, try to make weird stuff, try to use weird sounds, chords etc.

Depends on your workflow, the result you want and the amount of processing you use, and thousands of other variables. I don't see why you want want to use the number of layers in a track as a usefull 'aim'.

Also; About getting rid of the crowdiness. Use as little layers as possible, but as many as needed. EQ everything properly and give it its own space in the L/R and stereo field. Layering synths with different textures reduces the amount of layers you need and can create new textures.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Side-chain

In as small amount of words possible, Sidechain is the process of using the output of one track to control the action of a compressor on a completely different track.
can it be said as "compressing A using B, instead of using A's signal" ?
i'm just trying to make it real simple for myself :P
Yes.

Reverb, delay, arp, harmonic notes, pads, strings, vox chops, percussion hits, reverb hits, whitenoise hits . Literally anything u add will help fill up the mix haha. Just experiment man :)

thanks for the article Jay :) I really appreciate it :)

In this tutorial i show you how I mix my sub and midbass too. Volume is a bit low but i think it should be audible enough (i hope) - i show the eq and processing on the elements too

Sound Design / Re: Bass like Vicetone, or Dubvision?
« on: January 06, 2016, 10:29:56 pm »
I think that characteristic bass sound you're talking about is a picked electric bass processed quite heavily with a distortion unit. A sample library from Native Instruments played with Kontakt combined with Guitar Rig for example. You can hear a lot of these sounds on Alesso's older productions.

I think a great starting point for you is to watch this video of Dubvision going through Turn It Around. Make sure to enable subtitles on Youtube. :)
I agree with this. There's definitely a bass guitar in there and not a only 'simple' waveform like a square or saw.

The break is just detuned saws with saturation (and maybe a slight of OTT) layered with a proper mid-bass and sub bass.

I had this problem a long time too. Don't worry though. Finishing tracks will come naturally when you improve your production and song writing skills. Its all about learning as much as possible and then it will come naturally. Don't force yourself to finish stuff.

I think when people say "sidechain compression", they mean using sidechaining specifically to lower the dynamic range of the master (like regular compressing). Instead of using it for an effect, like getting the pumping sound for house. It's the same process, it's just used with a different result in mind. Or I could be totally wrong w/e
Sidechain compression is when u use a trigger through sidechain to get the pumping effect caused by compression. so its basically just volume reduction caused by compression triggered by an external trigger (ie sample or synth)

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing the bass with the sub
« on: January 06, 2016, 10:23:24 pm »
Hi everyone!

I'm having some problems in mixing the bassline with the sub-bass. I usually put a high pass filter on the bass around the 150-200 hz range and cut the highs and mids in the sub "don't know if this is right but the it sounds good" the problem is that sometimes the bass sounds too weak. How can i get the bassline to sound strong and driving without getting a muddy mix?
I would suggest high-cutting your sub above 130- 150 hz.
For a powerful sub, just take sylenth. Take a sine or square, 1 voice with retrig on. slap on some sausage fattener and apply the eq. thats literally all there is too a good sub.

Also, i disagree with the forementioned comments. The dissonannce in the fourth chord is done really well.

This song is perfect and has been op repeat since it came out. So sick man. 10/10 imo
