@resistance
The chords in the drop are 2 sylenth layers with detuned and nkn detunede saws. For processing i used waves maserati, fabfilter saturn and ott. Some reverb and delay and i cut the high end of the chords and added a whitenoise layer there.

@scribit #truth hahahah

WIPs / Re: My bass is always muddy and sloppy

Using a dedicated sub to play under 100-120 hz will clean up your low end a lot. Eq'ing your leads and chords properly so the mid-bass can sit between the sub and leads/chords is super important too!

Awesome to get mentioned on here already!  ;D

I bet about 95% of my synth sounds are probably made in Sylenth. I like to keep my sounds simple and clean.

I'd say future bass is definitely more about songwriting than it is about sound design. Like a few people here already mentioned, adding 2nds, 4ths and 7ths to your chords will help give them a bit more depth and emotion (not just for future bass obviously). I tend to use a lot of dissonant harmonies in my chords as well, I think a lot of people aren't used to using those types of harmonies in their chords. My music teacher in high school once asked me to describe a dissonant harmony and I answered "they always sound ugly" and he said "not if you use them in the right way", and that actually completely changed the way I wrote my chords.

Also something I absolutely looooove is using nice clean sounding, slightly detuned saw (most of the time using 2 voices) synth leads for my main melodies or solos. I use an LFO to add vibrato and then I automate the gain to make it sound funkier, I also use a lot of pitch bending and/or portamento as well to give it a bit more depth. To make it sound smoother I always use a nice lowpassed ping pong delay. Highpassing out anything below 120 Hz on the leads always seems to help with that as well.

One little trick I always use is slightly bit crushing the leads to give them a little 'crunch'. If I'm using a bit crusher though, I always lowpass anything above 20K, you might not hear those super high frequencies but your dog might. :( Even if you're not hearing it it might still clean up your mix and bit crushers always add nasty unwanted frequencies.
Thanks so much for your input dude. LU #nohomo

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Is music theory really important ???
« on: January 06, 2016, 01:02:54 pm »
I always say this:
- Music theory is not necessary, however it can be a good addition to your 'toolbox'. It wont help you 'suddenly' write better songs, but it will help you understand why some chord progressions sound good (or bad) or why chords and melodies can hold tension and have a sense of movement etc.

I know great producers/musicians who know theory and i know others who don't know theory. At the end of the day its all got to do with how good you're at coming up with catchy, original stuff.

Basing this from what ive tried, to get the saws from flume's tennis court remix, you need really wide chords that have their notes far apart? not really sure on that one. and to get the swells really play around with the amp and/or filter envelopes then automate the attack to get different swelling time ;D
Its got nothing to do with far apart notes tbh haha. Its just detuned saws with filter automations. Most of this chords are fairly dissonant 7ths, 9ths, 13ths, suspended chords etc.

Thanks for the kind replies everyone :)

Yes ! Great stuff, the melody is well written !

and my gawd these drums sounds hellagood !
Keep up the good work !
I sidechained the snare to the kick so the kick's transient would punch through and i also sidechained the kick to the snare, so the snare's thump wouldn't clash with the kick whenever they played together ;)

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing without monitors
« on: January 06, 2016, 11:09:15 am »
I used to have that low end issue too with my tracks in a club, a car, etc. It seems to be the common train of thought that 20-25hz and below is where you should roll off your track, but I find that does very little, personally. Try cutting out all frequencies from 40-45hz and below. You will notice a difference in your sub bass signal, but if you learn to work within that boundary you'll almost never encounter overwhelming muddiness from your sub bass, and you can still get a great amount of low end, just much tighter. I feel like the 20hz and below rule applies more to rock and other genres, electronic music can do with a more drastic cut.

As with all my posts, that's just my opinion, try for yourself.

You really need the 30 -50 hz if you're making club/festival music man. Without that infra-sub it will sound weak.
What type of sub bass do you use? And do you make sure the sub bass is the only instrument playing that low down in the frequency range?

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing without monitors

Imo you cannot really get the best mix possible without using monitors. You can have the most expensive headphones ever, but imo you really need proper monitors to mix. It just gives a different feel, more detailed experience. Atleast, thats how i feel from own experience haha.

Thanks for the kind words :) It was definitely Madeon-influenced (like all my stuff).
I have whitenoise in the drop, but its not really whitenoise to make the track 'fuller'. Its whitenoise that its filling up the high end of the chords, because I always take out the high end of supersaws and replace it with whitenoise.

Hahaha. Is that good or bad :')?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: favorite synths?
« on: January 06, 2016, 09:05:13 am »
My go to synths are Sylenth1, Massive and FM8. I've been using Serum, Synthmaster and Spire a lot too lately. Especially Serum is super easy to work with (Similar to sylenth and massive imo) and good for weird sounds
