Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: how do you get your kicks?
« on: February 01, 2016, 06:36:21 am »
A mix of samples and Sonic Academy's KICK plugin.

KICK does a great job of nailing the sub and low end, and then I use other kick samples as layers to build the rest. Often KICK is enough on it's own to get something decent straight off the bat, and saves the tedious job of trawling through hundreds of samples for 'the right one'.

They're one of few developers that actually live up to the hype. Their Equilibrium EQ plugin is insanely good.

Didn't realize they'd updated Pro-C! Going to have to put the demo through it's paces.

Has anyone given Pro-C 2 a good whirl? I need a decent work-horse compressor and it looks like it now fits the bill!

remember 90% of mixing is all about level / volume balance.

A thousand times this.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Stereo Separation
« on: January 31, 2016, 05:02:00 am »
For low bass control I use A1StereoControl - a freebie that does quite a decent job at stereo adjustments. Maximus does a good job of it too. I try to leave stereo separation aside unless it's for a creative effect or absolutely necessary (moving white noise FX further from the centre to free up high end for other sounds).

I see a fair few producers use stereo separation for a lot of jobs where panning will well and truly suffice. It starts to make your track very difficult to mix if you overdo this effect, especially because phase issues and phase cancellation start cropping up a lot. I try to limit it to layers or background sounds where their prominence isn't as important as other parts.

There are a heap of really diverse and highly usable packs here, and they're all free.

Samplemagic AB is pretty good. You can have up to 8 reference tracks.

+1 to Magic AB, great tool that one!

The issue with using reference tracks for spectral analysis only, rather than using your ears, is that peaks and overall balance suggest nothing more than the average volume and tonality of the track. Use a combination of visual analysis and detailed listening instead. Have your ears do most of the reference work, then use analysers to check parts more difficult to pick up on (such as low end or transient spikes).

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Question about the decibel read out

So, wait... FL doesn't use 32 bit FP internal mixing?

FL does indeed use 32bit floating point for the internal Mixer tracks, so they can be pushed beyond 0db, but the true gain stage of sounds in FL Studio depend on the audio source going into the Mixer first. So, in this case, the Kick was reading at -6db before the Mixer track, and that would not change to -10db unless the Kick itself was lowered to -10db before being sent.

There is another side to this however: the Mixer volume faders in FL Studio are set AFTER the track's FX Chain in the audio signal path. So, to further complicate it all, the end db level of the Kick's track is still -10db - that's what's going to the Master track in the end - but the db meter in the FX chain is correct in reading -6db, because it comes before the fader adjustment.

In a nutshell: Source sound in Channel Rack (Kick) volume > Mixer track FX Rack > Mixer faders and controls (panning, stereo) > Master track. That's FL's gain staging path anyhow.

Find the track in their project that is Armed for recording, and disable it. It sounds like it's recording a webcam or a mic connected to your computer.

When this happens, go to FL's installation directory on your computer (either right-click the FL icon and hit 'Open File Location', or go to it's Start Menu options), and run the file called 'Reset Settings'. This sets FL Studio back to it's default settings; kind of like reinstalling it. This fixed the Browser crash when I had it.

EDIT: Added a link from the Image-Line docs: https://www.image-line.com/support/FLHelp/html/app_reset.htm

Without getting too far into the specifics of it, the db meter is correct. If you've turned the volume fader down on the kick's Mixer track, the -10db you're getting is just the read-out from the Mixer track. The actual signal going into the Mixer is still -6db, and this is really, really important to remember for all audio going into the Mixer.

If you have a channel, sound, synth, etc, that is already clipping the output BEFORE it gets to the Mixer, lowering the volume fader in the Mixer will NOT prevent that clipping from happening, because it's not actually lowering the original signal - just the mixer volume. The initial volume of a sound before it hits the Mixer stays the same. The Mixer just acts as a gain stage so you can then balance that sound with others in the mix.

This is really important to remember when designing synth sounds. If you clip the audio in the plugin, it's not going to go away just by turning down a Mixer or Channel knob - it has to be treated at the initial source first.

Fabfilter have 30-day fully functional demos from memory, so you can give their plugins a good run before committing. They also have a multi-buy discount if you grab a few things at once.

I've only got Pro-Q (yet to upgrade) to compare with, but it's my go-to EQ for most jobs. It's a very clean surgical EQ with very little ringing or artifacts when making steep notches and cuts. From their demos, I reckon Saturn, Timeless, and Pro-C (or Pro-MB) are all worthy buys if you've got the cash and want the discounts!

+1 for FreqEcho.

The old Kjaerhus Classic bundle's Delay tool is still a favourite of mine for simple delay lines. That, and the old TAL Dub II and III

Mixing/Mastering / Re: getting tracks in fl to act like ableton
« on: January 17, 2016, 12:42:50 am »
Pretty much as you just described. Route the sounds you'd like affected to the Mixer track with the FX on it, and then un-link it from the Master, so all it's audio is processed through the FX buss to the Master track. You can control many sounds with one plugin/automation clip this way.

thanks mane. i'm gonna assume you're familiar with FL. question: is there a limit to the number of audio clips you can route to a single mixer channel?

As far as I'm aware, there's no limit to how many sounds can be sent to one Mixer track. Same goes for routing; as many as you wish.

If you have a bunch of sounds in the Step Sequencer you'd like all sent to the same Mixer track, hold SHIFT and click the little green light to the right of each sound you want linked (it's the little icon between the sound itself and the Steps). This'll select them all at once. Then just hit CTRL-L on the Mixer track you want them sent to. Makes for really quick busses for generic sounds like white noise FX and sweeps.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing a track in 30 seconds with Pink Noise

I don't like the method because it can't account for the fact that you want some elements in the mix to be louder/in the front and others to be quieter/in the back.

I think it might be more useful for mixing stems than for mixing individual tracks/elements.

For precisely this reason, it's not a mixing technique you'll want to rely on. It is, however, a really good way of understanding how loud and upfront each part of the spectrum can be!

It still works well for getting the balance right between the bass, mids, and treble, but much like the EQ charts, use it as a rough guide only.
