Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Is music theory really important ???
« on: January 06, 2016, 04:09:25 pm »
Ive been studying music theory for awhile and yeah it really helped me understand why certain notes go together, what chords work together, why do they sound a certain way. But then being creative with the theory you understand can really make you stand out.

WIPs / Re: My bass is always muddy and sloppy
« on: January 06, 2016, 04:07:07 pm »

Often times i use 2 separate layers for bass. 1 layer for very low steady/constant notes and another layer for medium-low rhythm/aggressive bass notes. It just crossed my mind now that i don't really have a defining line of when one frequency spectrum starts and the other begins or ends.  :-\

Try finding the line between the two basses. Using EQs, cut off the highs off the lower sounding bass then cut off the lows of the agressive bass sound. The lower sounding bass usually does not go further than 150 or 200 hz imo so i guess start there.

Hey first off great idea! you really need to clean up the lows when the heavy bass comes in with the kick it gets really muddy. try fixing it with eqing! also try adding some modulations to your bass lead in the chorus to get it really banging!  ;D

Tried all three still prefer FL 12   ;D
but honestly its all about personal preferences. some DAW's have certain things that others don't.

Have you properly high passed all the instruments that need it? maybe all the other instruments in the mix mud up the low end so it sounds sloppy. or maybe side chain the bass so that when the kick hits the bass ducks and will clear it up. Lastly would like to know how many bass layers do you have? do you have a separate layer for a sub bass?

To add to this, there are a ton of different modes, which no one really uses except like classical musicians and stuff. I think they're useful, though, because you can shift between modes in a song to add character. Here's a resource on other modes: http://www.classicfm.com/discover/music/guide-to-musical-modes

Yes modes will really help alot! It can expand your creativity in many ways!

I usually just play around with the piano then get something from that haha. After i try transposing to different keys and ill try to see if it sounds better.

It is not super important. You can create great songs just by feel but learning music theory can really help you understand which chords usually go together, how to make things sound a bit different but have the same musical movement, and knowing the scales. In my opinion its up to the producer if they feel like they need it or not!

Basing this from what ive tried, to get the saws from flume's tennis court remix, you need really wide chords that have their notes far apart? not really sure on that one. and to get the swells really play around with the amp and/or filter envelopes then automate the attack to get different swelling time ;D

Sound Design / Re: Standard House-y FM Bass

FM basses are quite complicated. I dont use FM8 but I use serum for FM synthesis. Its really playing with the combination of 2 sounds picking which will modulate to the other. Yes there will still be processing afterwards if you think you need. Personally would add a slight bit of extra distortion and eqing

@ EliteRezk what certain concept are you having trouble with? I could help you with some of them   :D
