Rules & Announcements / New Board: Inspiration/Motivation/Creativity
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:28:32 am »
Hey guys, we thought it would be a good idea to add a more theoretical, deeper conversation about music making to forum, so you'll notice we added a board under sound design where you can talk about the deeper subjects: Artistic expression, keeping motivated and inspired, and all the other stuff that is more subjective and personal. Let's keep this about the making of music though, not the selling/marketing of it ;)

Suggestion: 0-20 Subsonic

this would be more accurate wouldn't it

just say no to presets, kids

Or learn from them, then try to make your own

For those of you who are new to forums, most forums have a little personal ranking system based on how many posts you make. We thought it would be cool to have ours based on the frequency range:

0-150: Sub Bass
150-500: Low Mids
500-2k: High Mids
2k-20k: Highs
20k+: ULTRASONIC!

Feel free to discuss!

Sound Design / Re: Pad Design Thread
« on: January 07, 2016, 06:58:06 pm »
Absynth is my go to pad synth, and I heard from Thijs from Noisia that Reaktor 6 is great for pads as well, which I can't wait to try out. Any synth with good granular/fractal synthesis and a good selection of filters will be good for pads.

As said before, paulstretch is a great tool for turning anything into a pad, I use it on nearly all my tracks, especial ones with vocals.

Can you elaborate as to what makes absynth and/or granular synthesis good for pads? I have heard this before, but am a little curious as to why

With pads, the more organic sound the texture the better, and granular synthesis, fractal synthesis are the best way to get that organic textured sound (combined with loads of filters and delay/reverb type effects)

1. Don't try to be original + Don't be afraid to steal good ideas from your favorite tracks (Good artists copy, while Great artists Steal)

This! I'd even go as far to say, try and recreate other people's tracks entirely. It will teach you a lot more than trying to come up with original ideas. Just make sure you don't carry on doing it like some people *coughzombycough*

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Is mastering always neccesary?
« on: January 07, 2016, 05:51:38 pm »
I personally just mix mine and then throw a limiter on, so I guess I don't really "master" either. However, when I send my music to mastering, they never really make any changes to it, only difference is that they probably drive it into an analog console to bring up the volume instead of my supposedly shabby digital processing.

Sometimes, that's all it takes. Mastering is never too drastic a process. As Kevin from Wired Masters put it in a tweet today "less is more when it comes to mastering"

I sometimes scour liveleaks for samples, but this is also extremely depressing, I don't recommend it. You may find a great sample but you'll also want to go kill yourself

KT Granulator was a great free fuckshitup plugin, but I just looked now and it's been updated, and you have to pay for it :/

Lol this forum is as bad at recognising sarcasm as forums were back in the day.

Anyways, yeh it was massive, but I can't remember exactly what I did. I'm not at home right now, otherwise I'd check

I know a few top producers personally, and none of them have a virus. Hope that cleared things up :)
