Yeh we've gotten comments about this already and it's definitely on the to-do list

I actually said "we should make a vocoder" at the (kilohearts) office today. If anyone has good opinions on what a vocoder should contain, hit me up.

YES! A talkbox style one like the mda one but not as annoying to route and more options and better sound would be amazing. Please make this happen!

Not gonna pretend it gets hard sometimes. Sometimes I think I've lost it, but usually right at the moment I grab a hosepipe to attach to my exhaust, something hits me and I get super inspired and don't stop working straight for days.

The hosepipe thing was a joke btw, but I know that you know what I mean

I have a frequency analyzer, that's it

Yeh we want to keep that kind of thing well separate from the art of making music. That's actually why I wanted to start this forum in the first place

Sound Design / Re: Mat Zo, 'Easy' Lead Synth
« on: January 08, 2016, 09:06:43 am »
That was porter's lead sound, and I can't remember exactly what was done, but you can make it in pretty much any synth. A saw and pulse/square wave together plus a bit of chorus and vibrato and a LP filter envelope with a slow decay. The processing was pretty simple too I think, just a bit of reverb under some multiband compression and maximizing with maybe a touch of bitcrushing.

I know most of you probably already listen to this show, but for those of you who don't:

Such a valuable resource for finding inspiring new music, not just dnb, and all produced to a very high standard

R&A Graveyard / Re: A collaboration section would be sweet
« on: January 08, 2016, 08:47:50 am »
For the time being, we're letting people connect on other parts of the forum and gain some mutual respect, and then if people want to collab they can always DM each other. We're just afraid of a section like this becoming too impractical, cus collabing is a very private thing between two or more producers who've already spent time getting familiar with eachother's methods and ideas.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Sidechaining everything
« on: January 08, 2016, 08:42:15 am »
I don't think its poor engineering. Sometimes you want nothing but one element playing at a time like the kick and snare. Some people even go in and paste the transients into the track after they bounced it just to make sure nothing else is in the mix during the transients

Mixing/Mastering / Re: DnB Help - How do you mix the kick and subbass?
« on: January 08, 2016, 08:25:39 am »
I don't know how to mix the kick and subbass

What I'm doing is I'm using the sidechain compression method

How about the EQ? from what hz range should the kick be where it doesn't clash with the subbass, or how should the subbass be eq'd

As Mat mentioned, really quick sidechaining , but that isn't always getting good enough results .The best way I find is actually cutting a hole in the element I want ducking and tailoring the volume curve to the curve of the kick/whatever I want prominent for that split second .I also look at a bus with both sources going to that and make sure I manage to keep the volume about the same as when the kick/snare goes by itself to maximise headroom overall .A loud, punchy mix is made on the channels, not the master .-TeeBee

Do you have any tips on getting rid of sidechaining clicks? this is something thats always bugged me

Really short sidechaining with the kick and snare, although it's really difficult to get rid of clicks when you do that. So i make sure i have my mid basses grouped with the sub before I sidechain, and this usually sorts out most of the clicking problem. With DnB, its also important not to make your kicks too long, snares as well.

Rules & Announcements / about verification criteria
« on: January 08, 2016, 03:40:47 am »
We've been trying to come up with a quantifiable system for how we decide who gets verified, but to no avail. The problems we have are these:

1. We can't make it about how many followers you have, because there are artists who have acclaim, but not a lot of followers
2. We can't make it only about if you've been signed or have had releases, because there are acclaimed artists who have the respect of top industry people, but aren't necessarily signed yet.
3. For other industry people, like bloggers for example, it's extremely hard to say which blogs have notoriety and which ones don't.

For now it's going to have to be on a case by case basis, but this thread is for discussing what the criteria should be

I would go so far to say that the title track is my favourite piece of electronic music to date, of all time. Seriously, nothing else I've heard combines so much texture, foley work, comedy, space, happiness, melancholy into one concise piece of music

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: What/Who inspired you to start?
« on: January 08, 2016, 03:11:58 am »
No that I think about it, my brother. My brother used to play around with 'coolmixpro' (i cant remember exactly what it was called) in the late 90s and I would sit and watch. I got my own computer when I was 11 and started making general midi versions of Daft Punk tracks and stuff, eventually trying to do my own compositions. It was Daft Punk ultimately who inspired me to start making electronic music though
