Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Do you have a partner in crime?
« on: February 10, 2016, 08:45:57 am »
Ok, one thing I really battle with every single track is losing my judgement over whether the track is any good by over-listening to it.

It drove me crazy for few years. I've figured out that fresh set of ears might help, but sending the track to family or friends was no help, because their tastes were usually too different. That ment the usual response was: "Wow, cool. I wouldn't be able to do that." ...which is a nice compliment, but totally useless as an advice.

Like year ago though, I bumped on Facebook into really likeminded local guy with quite similar taste. ...also producing. We had quite a few really cool conversations about music. I found out this was the key as I could validate my ideas through his ears. ...and vice versa. We can exchange constructive criticism. I have a mean to find out if the stuff I'm working on isn't happening to be a total sh*t. But recently it feels to me like I might start to bother him a bit by those WIPs. It could be kinda tideous...

...so it got me thinking. Do you have friends that you can quickly bounce ideas of? If so, how do you keep them ... eh ... sane? :D

I have to go with:

KOAN Sound for amazing sound design and melodies.
Ramesses B for that positive melodic overloads on each track.
Madeon for how skilled this guy is. Still almost a kid. Unbelievable.
Deadmau5 for how huge he managed to get.
London Elektricity for showing that age is f***ing irrelevant.
Etherwood managing to get that precisely beautful combination of dnb and piano pieces.
Andrew Bayer for his glitched chopped and sliced extremely cool and I bet tough as hell style of production.

...and all the major guys active on this forum like both Matts and TeeBee for how close they don't mind to get to their fans. :) (aside from amazing music they all make)

I love it. I think a little fillter envelope on that hihat would suit it. ...so you have that 10kHz range for few ms, but it doesn't feel harsh after. But that's just tiny little detail. I actually like it a lot. :)

Great work with vocal chops and detuned keys. :)

:D

Again this one is just a tiny bit too random for my liking, but I like the sounds you're working with, those beats are tight. I actually quite like the bass as it is. One thing that doesn't totally work for me is that foley sound that appears around the middle.
Exactly my thoughts on this. :)

In all simpler terms guys, push your ego out of the way and you'll get a lot done & see results  ;)
I don't like to disagree, but I have to with this. I was a really low-confidence kid, a lot of it still haunts me. That usually mean that not much ego is in your way. ...yet, I still got to point of procrastinating instead of production. Gratification monkey just isn't enterteined by the production process as there was just too much failure in the past. That's wrong. I don't want this. ...but I don't think this might be a result of having an ego. Quite the opposite imho.

You know what bothers me, I have a bank of around 200 zebra presets, that I've been building over a couple of years. Some of these sounds are so unusual and unique, I can't believe I made them.
And yet, whenever I'm working on a track, the last thing I think of doing, is looking through my preset bank! I'll sit there for hours trying to perfect that evolving vocaly pad sound, not even realizing I probably got a better sound already made.
But yeah, sometimes I do remember, and look at those presets like a kid in a candy shop, so its definitely worth spending time, making a bank up, for sure
That makes two of us. Same thing. Big folder of custom Zebra presets, but frequently designing new one when actually composing. :D That synth is just too good. :)
...though in my case it's probably caused by stupid naming. Like: "galaxy congress", "hyper kid", "liquid muse", "crossover station". I mean ... I have them categorised, but it's still pretty much unsearchable.

WIPs / Melodic breakbeat mixed with chillstep WIP
« on: February 09, 2016, 06:16:12 pm »
Hi guys.

This is one of those tracks that has been around my hard drive for quite a time. I'm kind of getting tired of it. Is it good? I can't tell anymore.

Looking forward to any tip or opinion. :)

Sounds to me like a vocoder with chord being used as a carrier.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: question regarding compression
« on: February 09, 2016, 10:31:58 am »
Yeah, it really depends on usecase you think about. If you speak about compession effecting something like an electronic kickdrum then yeah, you can draw automation instead of it. (When speaking about clean non-saturating compressors) ... but the advantage of compressor is that on stuff with "unpredictable" and/or quick transients (real drums, vocals, pianos, synths with a lot of modulation etc...) it will do the trick for you automatically.

So theoretically you could draw "compression-like" automation over a master channel or finished track, but it would take you weeks or months to do it. Compressor will do that for you instantly.
i don't think that holds true, because a compressor affects only the part of the signal above the treshold. Volume automation will change the volume of everything playing at that time, thus having a different effect.
Nope. You've essentially described waveshaping. If it was "bending" the signal as you say, you'd hear pretty nasty harmonics being added to the signal.

But as Axis said, then you have "character" compressors with saturation curves. Those add a tiny bit of harmonics. Those you can't replace by automation. But clean compressor you theoretically can.

Maybe i didn't explain myself properly enough, but I'm fairly sure what I'm trying to say is not wrong (Atleast, i don't see how it could be) Feel free to point out any errors in my explanation though because I'm really curious to hear if its correct or not haha.

Lets say we have a kick and a bass playing and only the kick's transient plays above the threshold. The bass volume is unaltered because its below the threshold. However, a part of the kick that is above the treshhold is turned down. However, if you automate the mastervolume and turn down the volume at the moment where the kick's transient plays, you will also automatically turn down the volume of the rest of the instruments (in this case the bass).
So a different effect will be achieved by the volume automation vs. compression?
If you speak about compression on master, then your bass will be turned down by that compressor too, but just for time of the transient + release time. ...so you won't notice it. If you draw the automation in a same way (short like that), it'll be the same effect as clean conpressor would do.

I can hear the feeling he went for, but I think he's not there yet.

It needs:
- better chord progression
- tighter timing
- a bass in that chord-ish part
- better drop melody, especially the pacing of it

...but he's on his way. :)

BTW, song writing is composition. But the song and composition can be what ever you want it to be. you could literally string together fart noises for 4 minutes and call it a song.
Hmmm. Feeling inspired. :D ...it turns out, you wouldn't even need to record them for yourself. :D

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Struggling With Sound Design
« on: February 09, 2016, 02:00:51 am »
Lack of experimentation I'd say. You need to learn what every single knob does and then experiment with them fo so long, that you'll find out how their effects feel. ...then you'll slowly be able to get the designed sound closer to the one in your head.

It would help to hear it full. I hope the intro is a bit calmer, so it can build up nicely. The breakdown is cool. Reminds me of good old 2010-ish uplift trance. Thumbs up! :)

Be careful about uploading format, though. There is really heavy lossy compression audible on it. Dunno how it happened. It's either uploaded in low bitrate, or it was re-encoded to MP3 few times in a row.
EDIT: ...it's just on that SC version. SC does pretty drastic encoding, but it still feels a bit more than it normally does. Dunno.

Sound Design / Re: Bass leads
« on: February 09, 2016, 12:42:15 am »
You're right. I didn't explain what I ment properly. I'm sorry.

What I ment was another layer consisting of different sound active in part of the spectrum, where usually some kind of lead would be. It also helps to treat this layer almost like a lead. So reverb, delay, all the different effects you'd make your lead bigger by.

Big up, you made me think of my layers a little differently just now lol.

thank you.
Glad to help a bit. :)
