Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Vocal resynthesis in Ableton Live?
« on: March 09, 2016, 10:42:47 pm »
Harmor is quite unique. It can run in Live too, so I'd go that way.

There's no native noise removal in Live. This one worked for me while not ruining a bank account (that much):

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Thoughts on "Over" sampling?
« on: March 09, 2016, 07:18:05 pm »
Well as my country's law doesn't know term "fair use", I stayed away from sampling the whole time for legal reasons. But as for your reasoning, imho it's right. Rap is whole different story as there's whole mixtape culture. (Btw Loigic, right!?!?!?! Young Sinatra mixtape ... daammn good.) ...but as for other generes, I have similar reasoning. I like when artist somehow connects with the sampled content and continues that idea with his own instruments.

I wish i had. But none of my friends have interest in production/music in general.
I wish.  I feel that would send my productivity through the roof!
Wish I had one, probably would work with someone else over the interwebs create a side project all about it. make some cool characters to make it a kind of story behind it.
Damn, this forum really does need a collab section. :)

Mixing/Mastering / Re: So lost on Phasing... HELP
« on: March 09, 2016, 01:54:58 pm »
Yeah, pretty much. Point is, that this example was shown on total 180° phase difference (Which pretty much equals signal inversion. Not quite, but it's considered as equal.) of otherwise identical or similar signals. That's the "perfect" example. Fun begins when those frequencies are not the same, but close to each other. They will cacel each other for a while and strenghten each other for another while. This repeats itself over and over. You'll hear it as a distinct "pulsing".

...btw in mixing it's a bad thing, but it can be also usefull. Original Reese (reece? dunno) basses were based on exactly this pulsing.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing in Mono vs. Stereo?
« on: March 09, 2016, 04:09:32 am »
Well I like the stereo one better. But I think I know what's causing the difference you refer to. Usually basses aren't adviced to be that wide. Make it narrower and try to get the stereo imaging elsewhere higher.

...also if you are happy not using enhancers, don't. They get stuff wider, but if you care about mono version, they make the situation even worse for you. Monoe'd signal from enhancers tends to be kinda phasey.

Depends on your priorities. I would try to turn off all stereo enhancers to check, if that mess isn't caused by them. If not, I'd prefer nicer sounding stereo mixes as that's the way your listener wil go to "enjoy" your track by. Only today's usecases for mono mixes are cell phone speakers and some clubs, where your track would be masively altered by room acoustics anyway.

Sound Design / Re: quality piano synth's/kontakt libraries

I like Addictive Keys. It's not the most detailed one on the market (and it's cool to have some alternatives when you get tired of it), but that multi-mic mixer and synth-like filter section make it a nice nerdy plugin with surprisingly wide tone-shaping capabilities.

I heard mono-first mixing is quite a solid technique. But there's a catch. If you mix in mono, you eventually will come to the point when you need to do some panning (and other changes) to build a stereo image. More wide you make the image, more changes are gonna happen to your mono version. So you end up endlessly balancing between perfectly translated mono mix and nicely wide stereo mix...

So yes, I also like to mix in stereo with occasional mono checks.

Yeah. I have to admit my listening environment is relatively bad too. Though I've tried to sort of treat it, I still have this big resonance on 117 Hz.

Problem with this is the measurement. Without proper flat speaker and proper flat measuring microphone you rely solely on your ears.

A little trick I came up with though: Take a synth, make a patch that plays just a sine (may be also a bit of first harmonics so it's easily judgable) and make sure you have no volume modulation/envelope on. Make sure on your DAW meter that all the notes go up to the exactly same volume. Then play it note by note from bottom to the top and if any note sticks out as too loud, you've found a serious resonance you should try to get rid of or at least be aware of it. You can repeat this on another set of speakers to make sure it's a room problem.

...not a proper way of measuring at all, but beter than nothing. :)

What I use:

EQ - Native Ableton
Reverb - Valhalla Room
Delay - Native Ableton (native VSTs, too)
Compression - Native Ableton
Synth - Hive/Serum/Zebra
Daw - Ableton
I would actually just repeat this post. Exactly the same. ...just with Dune2 instead of Hive. But Zebra's still the best.

I recently felt a bit shitty musically. I've attended this amazing local meetup of producers. Everyone played their tracks on big badass club system, everyone talked, made some new friends. Amazing time.

...but then I went home and it got to me. There were people as much as 6 years younger that were playing totally amazing tracks. And not just preset/loops stackers. Proper producers with a real sound-design knowledge. For last few days I failed to feel ... well ... worthy. Motivation was gone for a while. It's getting better, though. Thankfully.

...but why the hell I feel this? I'm happy for those guys and for the music they are able to make. It's awesome. I hate selfish thinking and I'm not in this for fame or money. Yet these thoughts appeared and bugged me for few days. I'm confused.

Hi all,

since I've gone 64-bit two years back, I can't load m4a files into Ableton Live. (They don't even show up in the browser.) There was a topic on their forum that didn't show any solution. I wrote to the support and appearently the reason is that QuickTime (which Ableton uses to read the file) doesn't support external access in 64-bit. They suggested installing Haali spliter and ffmpeg. It didn't help. Wierdly enough, loading mp4 video worked fine all the time. ...which is strange as it should theoretically use the same splitters. Right now I have K-Lite codec pack installed and when importing mp4 I can see LAV splitter firing up and running as long as the file is in.

It all seems to me like a bug that Ableton ignores for some reason. ...or I'm doing something wrong. Is any of you able to open m4a files in 64-bit Ableton? I know it's question of simple wav transcode, but It's not as slick as it could be. :D

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Guilty pleasures

Justin Bieber. I get so much hate for listening to Justin Bieber from friends or family. I've been called a faggot because of it lol. I just don't really understand. He's a good singer and plays a variety of instruments.
Well ... have to admit, his last album is actually pretty solid. (Though Ed Sheeran and Skrillex fandom might be the reason too, lol.) I'd even buy it if he'd wear a bit more clothes on that artwork photo. :D

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Your inspiration for your name
« on: March 04, 2016, 07:56:42 pm »
I think my name is pretty self explanatory but I'll go more in-depth about it. Flowstate = the state of flow. For the people that don't know, the state of flow is the highest possible "mental state" one could be in in regards to doing something.
I like this name. Really good one! :)

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Most Awkward Set of Influences
« on: March 04, 2016, 02:38:27 pm »
I actually hate this about myself. I listen to sooo many styles. Hardcore fans of many of them hate some of the other ones. ...but I like it all. Grew up on swedish pop band I'm too ashamed to name (not Abba, though :D), few german poppy DJs I'm also too ashamed to name, then gone through ATB, Armin, Tiesto, tyDi, Deadmau5, Skrillex, then got into mr.SuicideSheep music and now loving that all new wave of electronic producers a-la Ramesses B, Koan Sound, Seven Lions, Aaron Static, Sorrow, Faux Tales, Zhu lately ...but also loving D'n'B in lot of forms. Etherwood, Calyx & TeeBee, Noisia, Hybrid Minds. ...and hip hop. All from good old Em, to new people like Logic, Dylan Owen, Chiddy Bang, Rizzle Kicks, Kinetics etc... And some rock-ish and alternative stuff like Fall Out Boy, 21 Pilots, All Time Low, Oh Wonder. And some acoustic guys. Ed Sheeran, Jack Garrat, Jeremy Loops, Ryan Keen ... I'm just crazy.

It might seem like nicely "diverse" but I hate how this forces me to get bored by making just one style of music. ...so I switch them a lot. Makes it harder to market yourself to labels and such.
