Mixing/Mastering / Re: Steps to achieve loudness
« on: March 30, 2016, 08:25:46 am »
Yeah. It's all in the mix. Less low mids, more high mids. Ears are most sensitive around 5k. If you want LOUD AS F**CK mix (though I think you shouldn't want it), you need really clean but not that loud bass and rich high-mids.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: SPILL IN YOUR PRODUCTION SECRETS

Come on guys. There have been "production secrets" topics before, one still kinda active. First rule of any forum is to search before posting. Only thing this one differed by was the caps lock. ...so we had a bit of fun with it. If it offended someone, I'm sorry. Didn't mean that...

I saw the dilema too, so I draw the line right behind that chord generating section. That section I tend to not use. That apeggio part though... It's simply best arpeggiator on the planet. ...though I usually record midi output of it anyway and do some little edits to the result.

Sound Design / Re: What is this sound?

Chris,

Sounds like a simple square wave to me.  Different octaves.  Nothing too complex.
Yep, short decay, bit of reverb. Nothing fancy.

I totally agree with Final Kingdom, but from the other point of view. Both producing and playing instrument are tough tasks, but playing instrument is more challenging due to that physical demands. I'm total loser at this. I learned how piano works, where are the different scales, how to press chords in them, but I'm simply not capable of learning to play any song without doing some kind of clumbsy mistake. No matter how many years I throw into it. Not even speaking about my quite funny tries to pick up a quitar.

...while reading this thread, seeing all the multi-instrumentalists here, I wonder if this actually makes me less of a producer.

Yeah. I have loads of questions on this topic too, but yeah, unfortunatelly promotion talks are not allowed here.

Edit: I don't think something is gonna happen from this and I don't feel comfortable to leave my friend mentioned here in some random topic. Thus the edit.

Sound Design / Re: Compressing Reverb Sends/Aux?
« on: March 24, 2016, 10:29:16 pm »
Dunno, did never try it, but can't think of reason to do so. Usually the practice with reverb is quite the oposite. Some engineers "ride" the reverb send amount to the intensity of singer. When he/she hits high important note, they send them into the reverb more, so it's epic, but returning to kinda dry sound for quiter passages. That's actually the exact oposite of fixing it's level by compressor. Too static for chill out music too. Dunno. May be as Marrow said, when few reverb tails are clashing and wobbling or something...

I've got feels that this topic's gonna be hillarious to read. ;D

Ok, I hear a lot of Garrix in there. Solely by comparing your melodies with his "Forbidden Voices" and "The Only Way Is Up", I'd say you need:
1 - Work on pacing. Especially first two tracks of your list have too many notes in that lead melody. They don't stop for a brief moment. Those two Garrixes tracks do. It's sometimes good idea to let listener absorb what he's just heard before you flood him with more notes.
2 - Take your listener to a nice journey in that melody. Make some variations to that theme you set up. (That's mainly speaking about third track. The melody is kinda nice, Garrix-ish, but it needs to break out from itself at some point. It needs some variation towards the end for example.)

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Music theory tutorials?
« on: March 23, 2016, 06:37:46 pm »
I think the glitch is that you want to read or watch it somewhere and then use it right away. Imho I'd do this:

1 - Buy at least 4 octave midi keyboard, if you don't have already. They're not too expansive.
2 - Load any listenable piano plugin.
3 - Slap a long reverb on it (like 30% w/d) so you'll enjoy it a bit more.
4 - Try what sounds good and what not. Combinations of notes. Pressed at once, then pressed after each other. Little melodies will appear that you can enjoy and try to develop. Trial and error will show you what works and what not.
5 - Cross reference those "rules" you've found with those books/videos you try to digest right now. You'll find out that you've discovered different intervals, chords and scales all by yourself. That book will name it for you.
6 - Try to keep this as a good time, not as a mandatory unpleasant learning experience. :)

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Sonic Clarity question?!
« on: March 23, 2016, 06:15:44 pm »
No. It's clever sounddesign, wise arrangement choices and EQ. Just don't search for any "magical plugins". There are many and most of them don't help you too much if those three steps above suck somehow.

...also, this essentially applies here too:

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: How to progress?
« on: March 22, 2016, 05:31:47 pm »
I'm obviously not a person qualified to give advice on this as I'm in this 8 times longer than you while achieving stunning 111 followers. :D ...but:

For 10 months your music isn't bad at all. You have your melodic and harmonic thinking figured out nicely. That usually forms a bit later. Use that as an advantage. Also you have some nice habbits about percussion. Imho you need a bit better sound design for the lead instruments. More modulation, more envelope work, layering etc...

Having said that, don't be discouraged when you don't grow as quickly as you've wished. I don't wish it to you, but one should always stay humble and prepare for such a possibility. Music should be the driving force for this. Not the listens/views/likes. ...because there's just so much place under the spotlight...

Czech Republic. Near, but still too far. (Titanic pun anyone? ;D)
But you're doing right thing. Having a mate in this endevour can work miracles.
Finally confirmed my suspicions, "CZ" is there for a reason  ;D I'm Czech Republic too
CZ: ahoj, snad se počty čechů na foru rozrostou :D
Hezky, domorodec! :D Ahoj! No taky doufám. :)
