Mixing/Mastering / Re: Why is mixing in -dbs?
« on: January 12, 2016, 04:42:42 am »
tl;dr: a DAW has no way of representing a signal that goes higher than 0dB, thus creating distortion

yeah basically that. you dont really need to know that much, basically 0db is the maximum db
and any volume that's not filled below 0db is called headroom

:D

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mono kick?
« on: January 12, 2016, 04:38:10 am »
it depends on how wide you want the kick to be. if you want it to be strong and punchy then mono is fine. but if you want it to be big and on a slower tempo (>120) then maybe making it stereo would be a really good trick. try analyzing porter robinson's worlds track and check how the kick is ;)

WIPs / Re: Chorus/"Drop" sounding weak/odd on some of my tracks!?
« on: January 12, 2016, 04:36:12 am »
Try automating your master or pre-master volume so that it's a couple db lower for all parts except the chorus. That's the quickest, easiest way to add "oomph" to your drop.

that !
+ try some tricks like removing all the powerful low freq from drums. so those only appears during drop
+ use crash on drop and riser
+ try to tell people that "hey in a few seconds there'll be a drop" using whatever's necessary

starting 2:57 there's a background tonal riser + white noise riser (halfway through) + vocal and beat doing that riser thing. yea you get the point

Rules & Announcements / Re: about verification criteria

Why would someone impersonate as other artist anyway? Not like there are special benefits for them.

Can't tell you why exactly, but to be fair someone took the username "Porter Robinson" within like the first hour of making the forum lol.

whoa shet. i'd be so excited if it's really THE porter robinson

In that case,I have completely misunderstood the concept of verification. So basically, verification is only for artists who are already established and not for the upcoming producers who have potential. Why would someone impersonate as other artist anyway? Not like there are special benefits for them.
Some people are stupid you know.
lol ouch ouch ouch

i can barely grasp this but hell
(btw your link isn't found what happened ?)

Well, from my point of view, it's just a pain to set everything to +0.50, especially when working with synthesizers. I'm not sure though really, I feel like I might try it properly and see how it goes. I think it's just a personal laziness (Which I'm also guilty for :P)

However I believe this producer uses quarter tones in his melody sections which you might find interesting. Check out 0:41.

damn nice melody. i got a bit tickled but def cooler after 5 seconds

27
why not try analyzing other songs ? Porter Robinson - Language got the coolest breakdown imo i studied that then suddenly understood how it works. basically the chord progression decides where the melody will go. if the chord prog changes (not just randomly) then it'll be real smooth

How does it work?

I know it's only available to read online, but why? Can it be converted to pdf? Does it include videos? How is the book organized?

It isn't available in a PDF presumably so that it can't be stolen, its only available online through the website or through an android app,iOS, etc etc. The majority of it is based on song layout clips from the website, they analyze popular songs and their chord progressions, the clips are all videos of songs that people put on the website (the normal free version of the site where u can look up a song and see it's melody and chord progression). It walks you through those and analyzes the melody and progression. The "book" is primarily about this, it doesn't really introduce any complex theory or go deeply into the modes. After teaching you how to construct major and minor scales It teaches you popular chord tendencies such as how the root acts as home base, ending on V or IV (cadence), and how notes in the melody can create dissonance or consonance with the underlying chords. It does a great job of explaining everything they teach you with a clip example right after, I just wish it taught more material.

isn't theorytab enough ? what do you think ?

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: [Q] Friend starting
« on: January 11, 2016, 02:18:34 pm »
usually he should start naturally at things he thinks he need first (maybe he wanted to jump straight to making odesza's sounds or making a full song. that's fine, it will took longer than expected but it'll go well)

try to tell him what those songs are made of first. so he knows exactly what to learn
