free packs nowadays are so good. but you need to explore and download weird stuff in order to expand your library (otherwise you'll be stuck forever with mildly-distorted 808s and "urban kicks"). you can sort of make your own kick using Sonic Academy's Kick (got to pay though). always look for samples on genres you don't touch, and after a few months and a couple of gigs, always delete all the sounds you don't like and never uses (this is just for cleaning, makes it easier for you to browse without getting a headache after listening to a million toms)

Generally I'll use cytomic the glue, logic's linear phase eq or ozone's eq to cut out uneeded frequencies, ozone maximizer, and sometimes oxford limiter. Mastering's probably my weakest skill though so I'm really interested to learn about other's chains.

+ understanding music theory helps you get to the emotion you want to evoke
+ if you want to make something with jazz/blues touch on it, you def need to learn that~
