Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Overwhelmed by new prodcution knowledge!
« on: January 07, 2016, 03:26:33 pm »
This may sound dumb but i spend the majority of the day yesterday on the TPF and i learned more in 1 day than i have in the last 2 years! once i got home from work i sat down at my computer ready to make some phat beatz and then i felt super overwhelmed and kind of limited by my new found knowledge. normally i don't think twice about anything and go to town in FL Studio but now i have all of this new knowledge that's sitting in the back of my head causing me to second guess my production. its hard to describe. should i just go for it and then come back around and apply what iv learned? or apply what i learned as i go? i guess my creative process needs changed up a bit. Recommendations?

They are great i just wish i could use them properly lol ;)

For the longest time i was using a pair of in-ear skull candies but they seemed to have to much bass so i would naturally make my bass softer. on my monitors its the opposite causing me to make the bass louder. i cant seem to find a happy medium so iv just kind of been guessing. any recommendations?

Those earphones actually have bass boosters which is why it is too loud and heavy. hmmmm if you would have the money i suggest buying decent headphones that have flat responses so that you can hear the basses at the right volume and the sound will be true. if not I think try referencing tracks that have similar basslines and look at their bass frequencies to help you along. Lastly I would suggest using the meters as guide to its volume but also use your ears.

it looks like ill need to invest in some better head phones. last night i tried using meters to balance out my bass and i was still having issues :-[ im probably just tone def from having a obnoxious sub woofer in my car for the last 4 years lol

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / KRK Rokits or something else?
« on: January 06, 2016, 09:58:10 pm »
I currently have a set of KRK Rokit 8 G2's and im looking to upgrade. The Rokit 8 G2's have a manufacturing flaw where the volume knob doesnt work properly after some time and im getting sick of it and im looking to get a new set of monitors. i really like my rokits and im thinking about getting a set of Rokit 6 G3's but im also considering other options within the same price range ($500). Any recommendations?

sounds like there are alot of NI fans here. I prefer a few of the FL Studio native synths like Toxic Biohazard and Harmor and u-he Zebra. Toxic is kind of a cpu hog but it does great stuff :D

I have the TI2 Desktop, I want to say that I recommend it, but I'll be honest - it's flaky as hell when it comes to using it via their VST/USB hookup. I suspect it's a great bit of gear when you're using it outside of their VST hookup (so as a classic bit of hardware with audio out to a mixer or something) but generally I find I dislike the majority of integration flaws it has.

In terms of sound, if you're after a really thick supersaw, great.. if you're after very clear/crisp sounds and really wide sounds, it's great. But yeah, for me, that's where it ends... the implementation is a nightmare.

Iv never used the TI2 but i can honestly say iv never had any problems using a Virus B by only sending midi commands to the virus and then running audio back into FL Studio through my Scarlett. The only real issue iv run into is FL Studios inability to support hardware properly and sometimes latency issues if im running lots effects in FL. perhaps you could run your TI2 in the old school fashion?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Software or Hardware?

Discuss why, how and when you use software or hardware effects and synthesizers! :)

I personally am a sucker for the Access Virus B. I use it in almost all of my productions and I cant get enough of the built in arp.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: 32bit vs. 64bit
« on: January 06, 2016, 06:16:20 pm »
However, 32 bit VSTs won't work in a 64 bit host.  So, you either gotta use somethin' like jBridge to wrap your 32 bit VSTs (which is a bit flakey, we're discussing this in another thread), or you just don't use the VST.

Or unless you're using FL Studio - 32bit plugins can be bridged to work in a 64bit version of FL (but not always in a stable way)

Harmor is a perfect example of not always being stable. i have presets i made using 32bit harmor that when used in 64 bit harmor they sound nothing alike. Pretty odd and sometimes super frustrating.

great speakers! thats why you cannot really hear the 25 to 50 hz, Monitor speakers alone do not have below 50 hz in their frequency range. Would you have headphones to try and mix the very low frequencies?

They are great i just wish i could use them properly lol ;)

Its usually quiet. its a sub bass so when layered with the agressive higher bass it will sound as one. Btw what are you using for mixing? speakers or headphones?

You would never guess by my productions but im using Rokit 8's

Try finding the line between the two basses. Using EQs, cut off the highs off the lower sounding bass then cut off the lows of the agressive bass sound. The lower sounding bass usually does not go further than 150 or 200 hz imo so i guess start there.

often times my low end bass sits at around 25-50hz, pretty low. at that frequency it can come across being quiet. How do i make a frequency this low be known in the mix without being overwhelming? How do kicks come into play with such a low bass? I want the kick to be known but make it through the bass line. kind of like a drum and bass approach.

That video pretty much nailed what im trying to do! ill have to check out some of those plugins as well when i get off work ;D

i think i might be able to use Image Lines Harmor as a granular synth but im not completely sure.

Thank you!

Have you properly high passed all the instruments that need it? maybe all the other instruments in the mix mud up the low end so it sounds sloppy. or maybe side chain the bass so that when the kick hits the bass ducks and will clear it up. Lastly would like to know how many bass layers do you have? do you have a separate layer for a sub bass?

Often times i use 2 separate layers for bass. 1 layer for very low steady/constant notes and another layer for medium-low rhythm/aggressive bass notes. It just crossed my mind now that i don't really have a defining line of when one frequency spectrum starts and the other begins or ends.  :-\

How does he do it? Iv tried to make similar pads but they just end up being a reverb mess.
