Current events, politics, and whatever i'm reading at the time (mostly science and politics and economics).

I don't use deadlines nearly as often as I should. I'm actually in school right now studying music production, and my output during the semester (while not the work I'm always looking to produce - it's scoring for film and TV, and I often wanna just make a dance track) is much higher when I have grades on the line. Some people can operate on their own schedule, but not me. A structured day is a productive day.

It hasn't really done that in my experience. There will always be people who just don't use the IRC server, you can't embed pictures or soundcloud files, and in general there is always content that drives people in the chat room back to the forum.

I actually just signed up for the little email guide, and the suggestions have been things that I should know, but don't. Thanks for setting all this up, Sam!

To be honest I thought you already had to comment on two other people's posts with critiques before being able to post any of your work. I'd definitely second the idea of setting a post limit (maybe Subsonics can't post new songs? Maybe even Sub Basses?), and some sort of ranking system so people can be aware of what the producer's skill level and how they should approach their feedback. It's a little frustrating to look for feedback and get "oh wow this sounds amazing great job!!!!!!" as a response, so helping people find peer groups, mentors, and pupils might be beneficial.

R&A Graveyard / Dedicated chat room (IRC)?

One thing I miss about the forum-dwelling days of the early 2000s was all the IRC channels that sprung up on different servers for all the people on the forum to communicate in realtime. I know twitter and facebook has really circumvented the need for such things, but I think it'd be kinda nice to keep the tradition going and set up some sort of channel or (if possible) IRC server for multiple channels if necessary. Something like #TheProducersForum or #TheProFo.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: How to organize samples?
« on: January 10, 2016, 05:24:56 am »

Currently working on subfolders for the different sounds (i.e. tonal kicks/top kicks/punchy kicks), and organizing my foley and SFX folders.

Not pictured: acapellas folder (needs organizing), personal foley files and other field recordings, stems from remix comps and other places, and my slowly developing personal "sample pack".

As far as how to organize your samples, here's how I went: I made a whole bunch of folders and subfolders (similar to picture), and I opened two finder/explorer windows - one with all my purchased samples, one with my new organized folder system. I listened through and started dividing everything into its proper place. Took me like 3-4 hours, and it's really tedious, but it helps a lot. From there, you can start further subdividing the samples so you can just find them ASAP, deleting samples that seem to just clog up your library (i'd personally move them to a "Trash Bin" on an external hard drive just for archiving but it's all up to you), and eventually finding the sounds you really like and putting a duplicate into your own favorite samples folder.

I recently switched to open back headphones (Sennheiser HD600s) and I wouldn't wanna go back for any production work. You maintain a sense of space within your current mixing environment and it really changes the way you listen to your work.

Ideally by not sharing EVERY idea you ever make

This is something that took me almost a bit too long to realize, and has already cost me a few contacts in the music industry (I can only hope I didn't burn any bridges while doing it) before even getting started. It's great to be excited about your own growth, but allow people to come to you more organically - trust me, once you start to stand out from the crowd they'll take notice.

I suppose since I was mentioned, I could add to this:

Don't try to be your idols, try to become someone else's.

It's important not to compare your own progress as a musician to others who are on the same path. Especially when coming onto a forum like this, you'll see people of wildly different levels of skill advancing at wildly different rates of growth. It's easy to feel like you don't know anything and there's so much for you to learn. That gets into the problem of Imposter Syndrome:

If you know the very basics of sound design, make a song that uses just the basics of sound design. When you encounter a problem, just learn the fix for that problem. Keep adding onto that, and don't try things that feel way outside your comfort zone. Learn at the pace that feels right.

It's kinda neat to mess around with, but if you have an understanding of music theory it really doesn't do anything besides give you ideas for various rhythms (which you could also do on your own by making those chords and experimenting). If you don't ever plan on really going deep into theory and live in the piano roll, I can see it as a good buy but I don't see myself using it in the future except as an educational tool for teaching theory or helping with ear training.

I've been working with the native alpha build and it's super buggy, but i love the line editors. Each build looks like a big leap forward from the last one.

Really digging this! To expand on the female vocals idea, you could totally throw a female vocal sample into a sampler with some looping and portamento and play a nice lead melody over this to give it some emotion and something for the listener to sing along to.
