KRNE's packs are top notch, whether you wanna admit it or not Cymatics is really on top of the mainstream EDM sound and have a ton of pot and pan sounds for free, and splice has a ton of sample packs to go to - Lex Luger, Just Blaze, and the KSHMR pack are all staples.

LOUDPVCK's Soundpvcks are great too.

TPF Beat Cypher

Good morning, everyone! It is time for Week 4 of the TPF Weekly Beat Cypher. Just post in the thread below that you're joining the Cypher and download the samples, follow the simple rules posted below, and spend the next 7 days working on a 1 minute beat. Private message me with a download link to your beat by Saturday, July 2nd at midnight Pacific Time (UTC -8:00), and come check out the thread Sunday morning around this time for the results and next week's Beat Cypher!

THE BORING PART - THE RULES (there's only two)
  • You must use both samples provided, and you must compose in the BPM provided. One sample will be a transition sound you place at the start and end of your track, and the other is the featured sample for your beat.
  • You have to both post in this thread that you are joining AND private message me with your track in 32 or 24 bit, 44.1 kHz WAV or AIFF file format before 11:59 PM PST on Saturday for your submission to count.

If you're unsure of how the beat cypher works, here's an article describing it, a video that touches on it, and lastly here are all the Team Supreme cyphers, so you can hear how they did it:

Here’s last week’s cypher:

Here’s the Beat Cypher playlist:
Now, onto the fun part: This Week's Challenge!

Our first sample is a live recording I grabbed on the streets of San Francisco of a street performer playing on a homemade drumkit. Quantized and ready for chopping!

Our transitional sample is a sweep I created out of some noise and the sound of a mechanical knife sharpener.- Place this at the start and end of your 1 minute beat so I can blend them all together at the end!

Our tempo is 122 Beats Per Minute, so you need to write 32 bars of music to complete this week's challenge - well, a little bit less but let's make it even.

Challenge starts now, so get to beatmaking!

REGISTERED CYPHERS:
  • Mussar
  • Lydian
  • eidolon
  • ScottCampbell
  • Aric James

And we're closed! Stay tuned for the mixtape and the next cypher.

EDIT:

Her's the new cypher, enjoy!

And here's the new thread.

Maybe they don't wanna pay the money, maybe they don't like the new UI, maybe Apple changed features they liked, maybe they're using 32 bit plugins and don't know about 32 lives, maybe they're worried about new bugs from software changes (this is a big reason you'll see people on old as hell versions of Pro Tools, btw).

Plenty of reasons people don't wanna update, bro.

That's good old fashioned FM! Any synth capable of FM can do this - Operator, Sytrus, FM8, Massive (with the Phase mod), Serum, etc.

You start with a sine wave, and you FM it by another sine wave - once you find the main timbre you want, set an envelope on the FM amount/operator volume so it will pluck from the starting point down to zero amplitude. From there, Distort, saturate, and otherwise effect it to taste!

Sounds like the dubstep bass to me, or maybe the phase mod in massive (which is just digital FM, cuz digital FM is technically phase modulation).

Final day! Please submit your beats to me via PM in WAV format - 32 bit or 24 bit, 44100 Hz - by 11:59 PM PST (UTC - 08:00). It's 12:50 PM now, so that means you have 11 hours and 9 minutes to complete and submit your projects. After that point, the cypher is closed!

Second episode is ready. Sorry for the delay on this, school got in the way. Today, we're going over thirds!

Yeah, we have a whole subforum for that. Can you please post this in the Sound Design subforum instead?

Thanks! That's what I thought - Just struggling with the right combination of waveforms and frequency ratios. I'll mess around some more, and hit you up if I run into a wall.

I'm having a mindfart where I know a sound, and I know I know how to create it because I've made it before, but I can't remember how to recreate it.

How do you do the high pitched feedback sound at about 4:51-4:52 in Dillon Francis & NGHTMRE's Need You? A variant on it appears at 4:56-4:57. It's just basic FM, right?

Well, a large part of it is the actual notes in the chord.

I might be wrong about it being multiple layers, and it might just be one very slightly detuned supersaw playing a very full chord, but through a phaser with no rate and around 40-50% depth. Looking at the spectral view of the chord, it looks like it's modulating between two C minor chords - a Cmin9 and a Cmin#13. (note: my theory chops aren't perfect, so i might not be 100% accurate) Experiment with adding Cs, Ds, and A#'s above a C minor chord and see if you can find it.

Phase modulation in massive is not phasing, it's digital FM.

Check the FX section, bro. There's a phaser there.

Saws and noise, put through a phaser. Put your saw waves at different octaves (I got fairly close with 3 saws - one at pitch, one an octave lower, and one an octave higher), and mess with the phaser parameters.
