Originality is just undetected plagiarism. The human ear doesn't want true originality, because true originality would sound like a random mess of sounds. We follow structures and rules that are set by others or set by ourselves, and even if we aren't directly copying someone we are relying on ideas that have come as a result of what we think sounds good. What we think sounds good is based on what we listened to growing up, so what we creative will inevitably become derivative of some work that affected us in the past.

Worry less about being original and more about being yourself. If you don't have the experience to know how to be yourself, then keep trying to be someone else each time you start a new track - inevitably you'll stumble across yourself by process of elimination.

If you're using ableton, the Grand Piano instrument rack preset has a surprisingly nice Pryda-esque sound to it with a touch of processing.

Oh cool, I can find "studies" from Huffington Post blogs that are more recent than your debunking. I can find multiple of them so best case scenario is that both of us are arguing over something that isn't fully hashed out and unless you're saying that you're not in favor of equal pay for equal work than we're both on the same page in wanting assurances on the books that there will be equal pay for equal work.

Yes, because it has been statistically proven (for the most part) that to stay out of poverty, you must do 3 simple things:
1) Don't commit illicit activities.
2) Don't have kids out of wedlock (doesn't have to be for religious reasons)
3) Get a job. Any job.

Provide those statistics, because I can find examples where you're wrong.

ya man, those african slaves shoulda just "grown beyond it"

those queer kids who have been kicked out of their homes and betrayed by their families need to just "grow beyond it"

it's easy to "grow beyond" shit when ur a blond haired wonderbread shmuck from the OC, but i'd love for you to ask alton sterling how he feels about being where he is because of things beyond his control.

Except we don't live in a "creative space", we live in reality. My art is inspired by the world around me, and the world around me contains unfortunate levels of disparity due to systematic factors. My "creative space" is designed by the truth, and I don't shy away from it. While I'm writing this right now, I can see a man outside my window sleeping on the street. Are you really trying to tell me that he's there because he "failed to apply himself"? Are you really trying to get me to buy that because you're "aggravated" by the truth, that you somehow get to dismiss the indisputable facts of the world at large?

Child, please.

Except white and male privilege is something that we can show demonstrably exists.

People with African American names are almost 50% less likely to be picked for job interviews over people with white names. They have to make 5 more callbacks than a white candidate. They have to spend on average a week longer than a white person does to find a job.

Women earn 79 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as a man, working in the same position, with the same amount of qualifications and job experience.

While both white people and black people smoke marijuana at the same rates, black people are 3.7 times more likely to be arrested.

The only person who talks down to others about not knowing the value of "learning hard work" is the kind of person who thinks that hard work is all you need to make it - probably because they don't understand how many advantages they were personally given to get to their goals, and foolishly think that their personal struggles somehow invalidate that fact.

48 kHz is also the standard audio sampling rate for film and television, so it could be that your card was set to 48K for those reasons.

Of course, if you're Deadmau5 you can just say fuck it and work in 96 kHz.

TPF Beat Cypher

Good morning, everyone! It is time for Week 5 of the TPF Weekly Beat Cypher. Just post in the thread below that you're joining the Cypher and download the samples, follow the simple rules posted below, and spend the next 7 days working on a 1 minute beat. Private message me with a download link to your beat by Saturday, July 9th at midnight Pacific Time (UTC -8:00), and come check out the thread Sunday morning around this time for the results and next week's Beat Cypher!

THE BORING PART - THE RULES (there's only two)
  • You must use both samples provided, and you must compose in the BPM provided. One sample will be a transition sound you place at the start and end of your track, and the other is the featured sample for your beat.
  • You have to both post in this thread that you are joining AND private message me with your track in 32 or 24 bit, 44.1 kHz WAV or AIFF file format before 11:59 PM PST on Saturday for your submission to count.

WARNING: If you do not follow the rules, your submission will not be accepted! That means if you send an mp3 file, if you send a file after the deadline, if you send a soundcloud link without downloads enabled or behind a private link, if you forget to use the featured sample or if you don't place the transition sample at the beginning and end of your beat, I can't accept it! I know this is new so I've been allowing exceptions, but please read the rules and don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions. If you use Clyp, it will change the file type to mp3 so please use soundcloud, dropbox, google drive, or some other method of getting me the file. :)

If you're unsure of how the beat cypher works, here's an article describing it, a video that touches on it, and lastly here are all the Team Supreme cyphers, so you can hear how they did it:

Here’s last week’s cypher:

Here’s the Beat Cypher playlist:
Now, onto the fun part: This Week's Challenge!

Our first sample is a recording of some birds I took in Hawaii. It's a long file, so as long as you're using some of it you can use as much or as little as you want.

Our transitional sample is a sweep I made from a recording of a waterfall in Hawaii. - Place this at the start and end of your 1 minute beat so I can blend them all together next Saturday!

Our tempo is 128 Beats Per Minute, so you need to write about 32 bars of music to complete this week's challenge.

Challenge starts now, so get to beatmaking!

REGISTERED CYPHERS:
  • Mussar
  • ScottCampbell
  • Aric James
  • FarleyCZ

We're approaching the final hours. Don't forget to submit your file to me via PM by 11:59 PM - which is 2 hours and 11 minutes away!

EDIT: And we're closed! Next cypher coming in just a few minutes, along with the mix!

"Good" is subjective, technically proficient is objective.

Technically proficient can be objectively analyzed - utilizing music theory or a synthesizer in a way that could not be achieved by a novice, an understanding of the proper use of EQ and compression, or possessing the ability to play an instrument or sing well. We can compare scientific details, like a lack of unwanted phasing or noise, a higher perceived degree of loudness without a loss in clarity or dynamics, or a "clean" mix with no undesired masking of frequencies. All you need is another song that has a better metric in the category you're looking for.

Good is entirely based on your taste and your perception. Whether your mixdown is cleanly divided like a well crafted prackage or blending together like the ingredients in a cake to end up warm and delicious; whether your sounds are heavily distorted or pure and clean; whether that melody should be quantized to the grid or left a little sloppy. These are questions you'll have to ask yourself, and this is where you need to start looking into yourself and looking into your past. What do your inspirations sound like? What sort of music did you listen to as a child, and how did that sound? What were the sounds of the city or town you lived in? What were the sounds of your school? Of your friends, or family?

All in all, the goal is to remember that you do not exist inside of a vacuum, and that other people are your reference point.
