WIPs / Re: Uplifting Remix

Nice track.

Here is some feedback:
 - The kick + bass combination needs to be stronger. It's difficult to point out what exactly is the problem, but I think you need to work on that part since it's the foundation that will carry the track.
- The breakdown is nice. Good pads and I like the birds. Perhaps they are a bit too loud and there I miss some of elements. The birds should be a secondary effect not something in the center of attention during the first part of the breakdown.
- I really like the main riff - both melody and your choice of synth. The automation is quite good as well.
- There seems to be too much compression and/or sidechaining in the "drop" (is that a thing in trance?).
- The crash is too loud + you need to remove some resonance with EQ.

Good job overall.

WIPs / Remix of Paul Van Dyk - Another Way

I was very happy to read that he's doing well and didn't suffer more serious injuries from his 6 meter fall of the ASOT stage.

I did a remix of one of my favorite tracks by him:

I agree on both the (too) long build up and the cheesy kick. I'll change that.

I've started working on a remix of Eric Prydz' awesome track Opus.

What do you think?

Also, if you would the midis, let me know.

I would lower the delay a bit on the arp. Or maybe add some reverb after it. It's a bit too prominent. Other than that, it's really nice.

I normally group the following and use an SSL compressor, a stereo widener and EQ on the diffrent groups to tie it all together. I still use compression, eq, pan etc. the individual elements if needed. If you do it this way you can get a really nice sound without anything but a limiter on the master channel.

1. kick + bass
2. Percusssion
3. Pads
4. Leads
5. Effects

I guess there are a million ways for getting similar results, but this works for me.

I think the eq'ing of the bass is ok.

I think the loudness is fine. I don't think that is what you should be focusing on with this track. To my ears, everything sounds "rough". I'm missing some kind of groove that make this track danceable. Also for stuff like claps, try compressing it or sidechaining is slightly - you can give it much more punch that way.
For the bassline - you could use some more compression and perhaps something like sausage fattener to beef it up a bit.

Other than that, it's a good start. You just a few synths and samples and you have a nice track.

I would probably work on some heavily reverb'ed samples - e.g. some vocals and just lowering the volume a lot. Add maximum stereo wideness to it and it could make your track sound less "empty" and still keep a very minimalistic feel.

Thank you!

The blips are from the arps of the original track that has been chopped up and added a bunch of effects on.

WIPs / Re: Current EDM song in progress. Thoughts?

I wouldn't categorize this as EDM (as in the American EDM sense). Some parts sounds more trancy to me.

The main thing I believe you should work on is the kick and bass. For this type of music you have to nail that part. I think the kick has too much mid-range. And the bass could have a lot more fun elements. If you are going for a simple off beat bass, then that usually requires a higher BPM. You are around 130 (right?). For that tempo you can do a lot of interesting bass lines without cluttering up the track.

You can listen to it on SoundCloud here: https://soundcloud.com/martin-leblanc-eigtved/the-blizzard-made-for-you-1

Or a WAV version here: http://cl.ly/33273a151w3W

Please note that there it has not been mastered so the volume might be low.

Thanks. I agree on that. The leads needs some work.

Also don't have "normalize" checke off when you export. Try exporting to WAV to see if it's still changes the sound. Using Wav and not normalizing should give you exactly the same sound as in the DAW.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Fabfilter? What do you guys think?
« on: January 20, 2016, 10:34:41 am »
Fabfilter's plugins are just brilliant plugins. I use the EQ for all projects. You can solo out a specific frequency which makes removing resonant sounds super easy. Their EQ would be the first third party plugin I would purchase.

Hi Brian. Great to see you in this forum :-)

It's a great track. I prefer the non-label version as well. It just fits the vocals better.
