Sound Design / Porter - Shepherdess Pluck Lead?
« on: February 03, 2016, 07:04:53 pm »
Can anyone shed some light on how he makes the lead during the break melody? I know its some sort of saw with some internal clipping. I just can't seem to get it full enough.

Does anybody have any Aphex Twin to recommend, some of the most amazing production he's done?

Well first off the concept is dope I'd stick with that. The vocals that come in are masked super heavily by that bass you need to bring them up or fit them in a little more clearly so that the bass is supporting the vocal. Otherwise if you add some percussion and hats and panned them creatively and balance the levels to give a foundation atmosphere that could help fill in the spaces.

Ya homie this is beautiful! I think the vocals are just slightly a little too much in the midrange. Maybe even just like .5-1 db. I think it would work really well if you boosted the sibilance just a hair as well.

Mix-wise this sounds pretty decent to me. Ideas-wise, I'm gonna struggle to explain this a bit but it's a bit full on with the feels for my liking, and could use a bit more subtlety and contrast, rather than just building up to full feels (lol), drop, build-up to full again, drop again.

Different genre but this is kind of what I'm getting at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y19KavBM9k0 (gratuitous opportunity to drop some Matt Lange)

In that track the breakdown starts at 2:13 and is quite evocative, but when the beat comes back in again, the track is quite sparse and brooding. For that to work all the elements of your track have to stand up on their own, rather than relying on everything going on at once to give the track a feeling of fullness. The melodic elements you've built your track out of are interesting, but maybe not quite interesting enough. Try having just a few of them going at once with the beat and bassline, and see if it's still listenable. Hope that helps..

I completely agree thank you very much. Haha and Matt Lange is the man so amazing I'll try and incorporate your feedback. Thanks again

Wow I absolutely love this. Its so amazing. You really have something good here. You should definitely continue to work on this track to make a full length track. Reminds me of the beginning of Language by Porter, so going in a direction similar to that wouldn't be a bad idea. I really hope you get around to finishing this, great stuff.

Thanks homie! I love Porter so much that's a huge compliment. I'll try and make it worthy <3

This is something I just made. I'm not sure where to go with it I'd love some feedback! Or if anyone wants to work with me on it that would be kewl.

Sounds good to me, but don't throw that out cavalier. Someone else's input may ruin/change the original idea you had. Be careful what you wish/ask for. Some people don't work well with others.

Word up boss. I appreciate that.

Has anyone used the Rob Papen BlueII vst? I watched the demo and the capabilities look endless but I was wondering if I could get a more specific recommendation.

Dude I loved that shit. I used to love that album so much. You did a really nice job! I think the piano's at the beginning really analyze each note's frequency and compare them to the mau5'. Because his key to making those beautiful piano chords is making sure the levels of each frequency is balanced just right to get the correct emotion. Takes some work but it's worth it. Also I'd suggest a multiband compressor, compressing on the kick and bass from about 100 hz down. Have the ratio about 2:1 and a slight lookahead and fast attack and release and then set the threshold low enough so compression is happening constantly but just slightly, then make up gain whatever the slight amount of compression is. It really glues the bass and kick together for a smooth sound.

I'm feelin this one. It's got that mainroom vibe but with some freshness to it which is great. The drop is dope I love the acid style bass. I think it would be slightly more powerful with the sub tail of each kick sustained for a little more. It would help kind of suck that bass back in and out and provide a deeper foundation for the track overall. Otherwise claps and percussion sound good and your use of the stereo field is pretty clean to me.

Very main room man! I think you've got a good track here. I does feel like it lacks some contrast as far as dynamics go. Try and make the breaks between beats a little more atmospheric maybe a little darker as well.

bassheads unite.

No idea though. I learned that's what a stereo bass is though.

Deadmau5: Because Steve Duda said that out of all the producers on this earth Joel is the only one he believes is at genius or savant level. Plus I have some nostalgia from Random Album Title. Such a good record. I really looked up to him at one point.
Bassnectar: Because the dude is amazing, and cares so much about his fans and this Earth. Plus I'm trippy like him so I feel we'd make some beautiful shit.
Porter: Because he's my long lost best friend. His music is literally what my soul sounds like.
Giraffage as well because he's a goon.
Lana Del Rey because I just want to know her perspective on life.
Drake and 40: Cuz 6God
