Sound Design / Re: How can I recreate this perc
« on: January 26, 2016, 12:51:51 am »
Sounds like a low rimshot or clap with the highs shaved off and a high pass around 500ish hz. It has fundamental tone around 1 khz. Shouldn't be too tough! Try it out in your DAW and throw a spectrum on it to analyze.

I'm digging the Jauz style drop man. I agree with the comments above. I'd add some brightness on the top of your bass sounds just to liven them up  and fit them in better.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Slate Digital- Just Get Them
« on: January 26, 2016, 12:30:17 am »
If you want some compressors that are amazing and based off analog performance, pick up Slate Digital Virtual Bus Compressors. The response is unreal. I recall reading up on how producers were saying how some compressors worked better than others and I didn't have the experience to really recognize the difference between compressors...slate compressors are the only compressors where I was actually amazed at how good they sound in comparison to stock compressors. Highly recommend them if you can afford it.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Is mastering always neccesary?
« on: January 26, 2016, 12:27:18 am »
I don't know if this has been said already but in "Zen and the art of Mixing" the author highly recommends allowing someone else to master your work. It helps tremendously to get a second pair of ears on your work. Be careful however to not allow the Mastering engineer to squash your work and effectively undo all of your mixing decisions.

Sound Design / Helpful Thoughts for Kick Processing
« on: January 25, 2016, 11:13:12 pm »
From my attempts at remaking Porter's The Seconds, I began developing a new way of looking at how I process my kicks. In his track the sub part of the kick ends around 49 hz, yet the main thump of the kick comes in around a higher sub frequency. In my head I began to add another layer of Kick thinking in addition to the normal 'attack, body, and sub' of the kick.

This is hard to explain haha but basically try to think of the sub portion of your kick as its own solitary kick, with its own attach, body, and decay. Make sure to only thing of the sub part from around 40 hz-100 hz. This way, you can manipulate the sub to have more thump by increasing its attack (which would be closer to the 100 hz mark) Or you can decrease the attack and give a more smooth 808 sound to the kick.

I hope this helps if you have questions about what I'm trying to say please let me know, because this has helped polish my kicks off amazingly.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Mixerman's Tips For Arrangement
« on: January 25, 2016, 11:06:49 pm »
I recently picked up a copy of Zen and the Art of Mixing written by Mixerman, I highly recommend it for everyone it's a good read.

Anyways he talks a lot about arrangement decisions coming from the point of a mixer. Although not all his points apply towards electronic production, I thought he did dish out some good tips as far as what makes songs successful. Basically he stresses the functions of 5 elements of the song:

(1) Melody:

-This is the main focus of the song (obviously) and is more often than not placed center in the mix and is among the loudest elements

(2) CounterMelody:

-A subordinate melody to the main focus of the track, it serves to contrast the main melody and support it, never to take away focus. Often times the countermelody works opposite to the automation of the main melody. When the main melody goes up in pitch the countermelody will drop down, when the main melody drops out the countermelody comes in etc.

(3) Rhythm:

-For us this will be the bass and drums. What I thought was helpful from the book was a mention of internal Rhythm. This is the rhythm that moves us in between the main kick and snare hits. These are the hihats, percussion etc. and they serve to provide a secondary rhythm for the track that works with the main rhythm, similar to melody and countermelody.

(4) Harmony:

-Harmonic support for the melody. These could be underlying chord progressions, white noise or a multitude of other mixing decisions that help our ears reach satisfaction with the melody playing as well as the drums we hear.

I hope this begins to help some of you in arranging decisions. It's hard at first but once these are ingrained into your brain it really does help to start producing cohesive melodies. And again I'd recommend picking up a copy of the book there are other jewels inside :)

Sound Design / Breathless-Bassnectar Stereo Bass
« on: January 25, 2016, 10:48:00 pm »
Does anyone know how to make the stereo bass that is in the background at the drop?? I've tried many times to duplicate it but I somehow fail to achieve the smoothness of the sound. I think it's a variation on a saw with a bandpass filter. You can hear it clearly in the buildup to the second drop around 2:55

Finished Tracks / Re: Be Together (DANZ Remix) | 100 BPM Progressive Trap
« on: January 25, 2016, 09:26:32 pm »
The track is dope man! I really like the flow of it and its mixed very well. I agree the kick is a little aggressive. If you have a gate plugin maybe shave off a little of the attack and then lower the volume. Once that's glued into the mix a little better I think you're set! I enjoyed the melody on top of the drop I think you wrote a cohesive track  :)

I agree you shouldn't rely strictly on copying a referenced spectrum. What has worked well for me in the past is to compare ratios on the spectrum and duplicate them in your own tracks. For example, measure the ratio from the sub on the reference to 1khz and then use that ratio on your mix as well. That way you can develop your own base levels and achieve a similar sound yet still maintain some level of independence.

Your drums are on point yo! I'd be interested in what sample packs you're utilizing. Besides that this song bumps...so clean and flowing. You say the intro and outro are unfinished but I think they are satisfactory honestly. Maybe add a few more layers. But I can't really say anything else this is quite amazing.

This is something I just made. I'm not sure where to go with it I'd love some feedback! Or if anyone wants to work with me on it that would be kewl.

« on: January 25, 2016, 07:45:15 pm »
I like this it reminds me of OG Bassnectar or some minimal techno shit. I think if you tighten up your kick sample and give it a nice clean attack it will help glue the elements together. But as for a start I think it's dope you should keep working on it!

Sound Design / Re: Toms processing
« on: January 25, 2016, 06:42:29 pm »
In addition to these comments, I'd say compression is key on percussion to fit them in the mix. You have to deal with attacks carefully so as not to overpower other elements, especially since Toms are more midrangy. Try to tame the attacks, add some distortion like artificial clipping on the high end to give them some presence without overpowering everything. As far as stereo width, utility plugins can handle that.
