Yeah, with Bryan on this one, it's fairly simple as that.

Machine, I would say that image applies fairly well to the topic if people decided not to apply reason behind their actions. :/ I never liked that analogy because it's going on the presumption that people can't put a line down where they realize that's the limit, though it does make a good point all the same, you can only get so "original".

The idea of "original" creative content is a misnomer
That is true, but still, there is a difference between being influenced by something, and straight up copying and pasting something somebody else made.

2 second loop from an old Super Nintendo game and make some crazy things with it.
Honestly, I wouldn't call that song something crazy, it keeps to a pretty standard use of sampling with hip hop producers. I feel like in rap obviously just using chunks of someone else's song is more excusable, because at that point it's not about the track, it's about the lyrical content. but in a lot of electronically produced music, it's about the production more, and that's when it becomes straight up stealing. You do have a good point about influence, but doesn't mean they're the exact same thing as stealing. If it worked that way, every single Metal band would be suing every other metal band, but once again, you make a fair point.

hotchyy, I can definitely get working on something like that, and I'll show you the result as soon as I'm done, it seem simple enough. If I remember specifics afterwards, I'll give you a play by play of how I made it.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Incorporating Everyday Life?
« on: March 16, 2016, 01:26:56 pm »
A lot of people have different lifestyles, jobs, ways of living, and workflow. What I want to know, How would you say the culture, people, society, and your environment around you affect your music? This could be from what you make being very popular in your social groups, or being raised in a very nature loving community influencing you to play a lot of acoustic guitar in your songs. Maybe you would wake up every morning and go to your job, where you work as a steel mill operator, constantly hearing the grind of steel being formed, loud obnoxious demanding sounds make you think of the rhythm for a heavy, attention songs, like dubstep. Or you walk out only to see thousands of people crowded together in a big city with little room, everyone is yelling at someone and every driver has their hands ready at the wheel to honk at the next a-hole to walk in front of them, driving you into a fast-paced rhythm track, like drum and bass.
So to reiterate my question:
How would you say the culture, people, society, and your environment around you affect your music, whether it be adverse, or positive, obvious, or subtle.

Sound Design / Basic Serum Bass Synthesis Tips
« on: March 15, 2016, 02:20:42 pm »
Hello! Billy Mays here with some basic Serum Synthesis! No, but seriously, I've spent time learning my way around the instruments that I use, I'm no master, but I definitely have a strong understanding of a few of them. Now, this isn't a work for all situations tip I'm doing, but a definitely fun way to create unique form of sound. I don't watch tutorials so I don't know if this is common information (not there's anything wrong with watching tutorials, I just learn better by experimenting)
1. Take a sample, any sample, I tend to like using short vocal clips. (don't make it too long)
2. Drop it in as a wave table, and either type in yourself about 1000-1300 (I like 1245) for the slice rate, or just do FFT1024, if you want it to be quicker...but it's not that much quicker, just the time you take to type.
3. Pitch down the key you play in by -2 octaves, it's the pitch the wavetable is now playing it at.
4. Cut out silence, Crossfade (preferably the spectral ones, but wing it!), and then Normalize if you feel it's right.
5. You can also Fade Edges if there's a little too much white noise sounds going around the instruments.
6. And if you want to bro it around a bit, use the Multi Process Squarify, makes it a little more Virtual Riot, or some of Skrillex's stuff.
This is the point where you can experiment!
1. Create an LFO to run through the wavetable you made, it can be straight forward, or have it move itself across the board.
2. Maybe filter the wavetable through another one and automate it so you can have a live sample run through a synthetic wavetable. Does well if you RM (ring modulate) with a vocal, can do something you'd here a lot in some of Skrillex's stuff.
3. Automate a filter, maybe phase, or two different bandpasses, or just automatic LFO to automate, can create cool bass sounds.
4.Experiment! Try making something else with the sound.
Post anything you make using these suggestions on here so I can be proud of you!  ;D
Billy Mays here with this amazing new product, that I know, you're gonna love!

Well as my country's law doesn't know term "fair use"
Definitely good reason to keep away. lol

Rap is whole different story as there's whole mixtape culture
Indeed, one of the reasons I have trouble hating on Rappers for it, it's kind of the roots of it, and it doesn't become the sample.

I like when artist somehow connects with the sampled content and continues that idea with his own instruments
Adding creativity does always seem a good reason to use a sample, and trying to expand on it sounds good, but I feel like there's a point the artist should just call it a remix. like if you've heard it, there is points like in the genre future funk where the artists just lazily overlay old japanese funk songs with a 4onthefloor beat, and leave it at that, maybe a low bass melody to add frequency, but they'll just leave it as a repeating stolen idea, no expansion, and claim them as original music. :/ It really disappoints me as an artist.

Could you maybe upload a audio recording of what's happening, or even better a screencast of specifically what happens?

OPTIONS:
  • Don't read them or block them, which is not exactly the proud way to handle this but you won't see them.
  • Deal with it, if they truly are your babies, you should care what others think about your children, a parent doesn't need that bullshit negative influence on their children.
  • Listen with perspective, my personal favorite. Hear what they say, but only truly listen to those you consider are trying to help you, whether it be positive reinforcement or constructive criticism. Everything with a grain a salt and a heap of logic.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Thoughts on "Over" sampling?
« on: March 09, 2016, 05:17:43 pm »
I've been fighting back and forth in my head on the opinion and moral and what's the limit of sampling and I want to hear what other people think? There are certain genre's that have become known for just doing brobdingnagian amounts of sampling, specifically, Electro-Swing, Rap Instrumentals, and Future Funk are what come to mind to me. And I do enjoy electro-swing, and I'll enjoy a rap song despite the instrumental clearly taking it's entire sound from another song, like Logic's "The Spotlight", because at that point it's not about the instrumental, it's about the lyrical content, but I still think the producer is just being lazy. Most of producers who create Electro-Swing tend to just add an electro beat to an old swing song and cut it up very minimally. I've organized my personal opinion on what I think about this for myself.
  • If you(myself) to sample a song, either make it a minimal use of sampling, or change what you take to such a creative spin that it becomes your own.
  • Don't get lazy, just cutting up someone else's song a little and adding drums to it just seems kind of cheating.
  • Still add your own creative content to the song, not just have it center someone else's sample, make creative decisions and add your own musical content that you create.
  • Realize that not all songs in a genre are uncreative because of there common stereotype for sampling, there can be artists that do it in a creative manner without straight up stealing someone else's sound and do it right, but doesn't mean everyone is exempt.
So what do you guys think? Am I thinking to much into it? This has been a personal moral battle for me that has troubled me for quite some time, and I want to know how other people see it. Just add your opinion, argue against my opinion or with me. I just NEED to either what others think on this topic.

Wish I had one, probably would work with someone else over the interwebs create a side project all about it. make some cool characters to make it a kind of story behind it.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Your inspiration for your name
« on: March 09, 2016, 04:58:01 pm »
Two reasons behind my current music alias, My step-mom was a psychologist, and also my favorite book was Through the Looking Glass, the very inspiration for most Psychedelic stories and art. Well, from her and that story I became just a little obsessed with trying to understand the way of thinking of mentally ill people, such as schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder. So that obsession with that led to my music alias. I've also always been a creator of stories, hence my last EP was a literal story of the Apocalypse and SPAAAACCEEEEE....so I'm thinking of maybe doing another project called Storyteller, or Storytellers if I find a partner in crime!
