Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Writers Block
« on: January 22, 2016, 08:44:36 pm »
Whenever I have writers block the best thing I can do for myself is simply push through it. Just keep going. Keep writing. Trust in your instinctual creativity and know that there is an infinite amount of music that can be written from scratch. I like what you've got so far. Keep going!

Damn T.K. I love the sound design you are able to recreate! I checked out some other stuff on your SC. What synths do you primarily use?

Hey guys,

This is the second project I have posted on this forum. I received tons of very helpful feedback the first time around so I am back with more.

I spent about two and a half weeks on this total which is more than I have ever spent on a song before. I can definitely say I am very proud of it and would love any feedback that you guys have to offer.

Enjoy the ride  8)

You definitely have a solid track thus far! A few suggestions I have would be maybe dial back that lead a little bit. It is kind of overpowering. Right around 1:19 when that melody becomes the focus, it seems to be causing clipping? It also sounds like you may want to consider bringing the notes you have for the bass there up an octave. Kind of grindy without much low frequency.

I would honestly recommend bussing all of the elements and turning them down by 3dB or so to give yourself some more headroom to work with. The main thing I really noticed was that things sound a bit too compressed during the louder parts. The breaks sounded clean.

Keep it up!

WIPs / Re: ditch or carry on working on it? (progressive trance)

I really like the idea! That drop has a TON of potential!

A bit of feedback: The drop lacks energy. I think part of that problem is that everything building up to it is super wide. The main chords on your drop are too narrow. I'd try and aim for a bigger kick. The one you have kind of gets lost in the mix. After having gotten very similar advice from a few people a little while back, I can tell you it's all about headroom. Create space where possible.

I really like the lead during the break. It almost sounds like something Sunny Lax would use. I think the bass could be a bit stronger during the drop as well.

Overall, I am a big fan of this track. I am aiming for constructive criticism here. I know that I am always looking for that on this forum so hopefully this has been helpful advice. Keep it up. Really dope so far!

Really good feedback thus far guys! Working on a new version as we speak. Headroom is always our worst enemy. It always seems impossible to fit as many frequencies inside the song as we'd like. It's all about perceived loudness sometimes. I can definitely tell now that I have listened back with a more objective perspective that it does need more low mids. It also definitely needs more stereo width.

What I am really having trouble understanding is how their side chain is set up. It seems to pump in an almost non linear fashion.

My version: Original Version (jump to around 1:40): Hey guys,

I have been working vigorously on a remix for super8 & tab's "Soul's of Lovers" and I am having trouble getting my mix to sound as big and epic as theirs does. I am getting close but could use some advice on how to get closer.

Do I need to change up the EQ? Mess with time based effects? Use different sounds?

Really just looking for general feedback here. I recreated all the chords by listening through a few times. I've also added some of my own sounds.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

ps. if anybody knows where I can get the acapella for the original I would be forever grateful.

Really like what you've got here! It is, however, lacking low end. I think you've got a tiny bit too much going on in the mids around 2k (I am borrowing some bose headphones atm rather than my standard studio headphones so....bias) but other than that, it sounds great.

The kick could be a bit punchier around 105hz (maybe just a subjective thing) but if you got that low end pumping harder, this would be ohhh so good. It is definitely lacking weight during the drop.

Love the melody and all of the musical elements

how do you guys make a living while also putting this much time into music?

You find time. You sacrifice parts of your social life. You give up a few hours of sleep a night/week. You make plans and routines that concentrate your focus so that the time you're spending is worth twice the time spent just goofing off without a solid direction.

Eventually, it comes naturally.

Couldn't agree more with these words.

Definitely like what you've got so far! Almost sounds like something wolfgang gartner may have played in his earlier sets. I'd say you may want to re think the kick sample. It is too harsh and loud. It can be tough to make a kick stand out in the mix, but that one almost is too apparent (on the high end at least).

I would also try and make the rest of your drums louder in the mix. Don't be afraid to use the stereo field! pan those high hats and claps out of the center, they get completely lost in the mix you have.

Over all a really cool groove!

Sound Design / Re: How do I pull the vocals out of a finished song?

In all reality its pretty much impossible without artifacts.
Yeah I know it is without any, I just know it's possible to do it with very minimal artifacts.

really appreciate the feedback guys. it goes a long way. I just began a new song this morning and I already have a very solid start on it

Holy shit your remix of Gold Skies is SICK!! A few things I am curious about...where do you get your drum samples from? Also when you are talking about artists like Paris Blohm commenting on your tracks, through what avenue do you go to send your stuff to them?

I have only recently become confident enough with my tracks to be posting it / sending it to people for feedback and I would love any advice you have for me to get my stuff heard by bigger artists for feedback purposes.
