Finished Tracks / Re: ONDO - Lost in the forest( IDM )

really like the musical pieces! very cool vibe to it, especially with the bells. But as others have said, the drums need some work. Honestly, I would make them stand out more. It's one thing to want subtle drums but these just sound like they are small and quiet rather than subtle...if you know what I mean  ;)

Overall I really like what you've got. I'd say try a different crash sample as well

I would like the drums to be louder relative to the levels of all the other elements in the mix.  It also feels like every element is widened, try to be more selective about which element should be widened and which element should not.

Also, you should embed your song in the post so that people can listen to your song directly from this thread.

Good luck :D
I agree with all of this 100% The best piece of feedback I would give to you is use reference mixes. Often. Have a track in mind that you like the mix of. Aim to make yours sound like that.

I really like the creative elements you've got going on, but everything is too big. Try and select certain things to make huge and wide and leave the rest more centered. The drums are pretty weak too. Try and make the kick punch through the mix more. The best way I have found to make that happen once you have a full track like yours is to select a new sample (or layer of samples in most cases).

Not that I am an expert by any means but you could listen to the song in my sig as an example for what I am talking about with the kick.

Overall I really like what you've done! Defo keep it up

Sound Design / Re: How do I pull the vocals out of a finished song?
« on: January 09, 2016, 10:10:22 pm »
I've been messing around using mid-side processing and turning down everything but the center, then subtracting some eq to remove as much of the instruments as possible, then i'll add another layer with all the original signal in there and invert the phase but I can't seem to get any sort of decent end result. Just figured somebody might have a decent formula that has worked for them

Please leave your opinions  ;)
I can definitely see where you're going with it. I would try to make the kick a bit more predominant throughout the mix. I assume you were aiming more for a deep house kind of thing so the kick isn't so intense like in trance or electro but I think it could use a bit more mids/highs to stand out. Just my subjective opinion  ;D

If you have the instrumental you can get the acapella with phase invertion
A good idea in theory! I just can't find the instrumental or the acapella anywhere :/
If i were to find an instrumental, in order to use phase to remove the vocal would I just play the two on top of each other, invert the phase of the instrumental and record the result? simple as that?

Something I would definitely recommend trying is to force yourself to make a new song every week. I have been doing this for about 3 months now and am VERY happy with the results. It forces you to stay creative and avoid stagnation. I find if I spend too long on any song, I eventually try to rewrite it and end up ruining it.

Consistency is key here. Just keep making more and more and eventually you will find a good work flow.

Obviously I know this cannot be done perfectly. But does anybody have a decent method for pulling the vocals out of a completely finished track? It sucks when you want to remix a song but cannot find an acapella for the lyrics anywhere  :-\

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Why do you do it?

Of course the idea of playing shows and being up in front of a crowd of 1000 crazy dancing people has always intrigued me, and that is largely why I started. I have continued on the path that I am on now because after finally making music that I love, I can say there is no other feeling like it in the world. I want my music to take me to foreign places where I can share it with people whose souls light up like mine does when I hear people like Andrew Bayer or Above & beyond live.

I like the over all track! Yeah, i'd say aim for more space. I would also try and get that kick to be punchier (maybe compress it a bit and add some frequencies somewhere around 100-110) but that would be my personal taste for a kick. The high end layer you have helps it stick out well.

I would aim to put some more reverb on those plucky chords. that could go a long way in the sense of making the whole song feel bigger. I love that dreamy ambient melody you have floating around.

I make a similar style of music myself and one good piece of advice I was given by Daniel from Judah is to try and keep more energy throughout the breakdown. It seems to die down a little too much. Feel free to listen to my stuff and see what ya think.

Keep it up man!

really good man! That first drop was huge. You have a great stereo field going and it is mixed really well. I am curious as to where you got the stems for this song? I have been wanting to remix divinity since I first heard it haha

I love the fills and diversity in your drop! I like it though I am around the same time producing as you, we'll be pros someday!!  ;D
Thanks man! Heading to bed but I'll have to give your stuff a listen early tomorrow morning. It has been an amazing experience learning what I have thus far. Just trying to keep looking at things with beginners eyes  :o

Reall amazing stuff man. Definitely has a seven lions feel to it. Hope had some adventure club feels going on during the opening part. I really like the energy and space you are able to create in your mixes. If you find yourself with some free time, i'd very much appreciate any feedback you may have for me on my most recent creation "crossing over" https://soundcloud.com/venik-1/crossing-over

I like what you've got so far! I am still pretty new to producing myself. I would say try to make the sounds bigger. During the drop everything is a tad too mono and could use some more stereo width. You could try and make those little vocal chops larger with a bit more reverb and maybe some panning throughout to create space/movement. Pretty cool starting point though, I like the idea you've got going!

Really like the remix! I did one myself for this song but have since progressed so much that I don't really like mine that much anymore haha.
Anywho, the one thing i'd say is that the saxophone melody you have is a little too hidden in the mix. It seems to be the main focus and it kinda gets lost. Maybe try and create a bit more space for it during the heavier parts? Just my personal opinion.

Overall, love the track!
