No I don't mean it as an insult man, honest lol
That growl is amazing, I mean listen to Seven Lions remix of Above & Beyond You got to go & you'll find that sound in there too.
Mind explaining to me what synth you made it on? I know it doesn't matter what synth you make it on, I'm just interested
But yeah the Seven Lions is real in your track lol

I made it in massive, it's actually a simple growl. What makes it that effect though is how it was panned and modulated in the song.
I could probably share the project to show you.

Hold up at the 2:06 mark how did you make that almost talking sound? It's not bad but not good either it's interesting but if you worked on it more it can be better almost has the seven lions feel to it. Always take pride in what you create, no matter hood good or bad it sounds

Is that a back handed compliment? haha.
It is a growl that is chopped up with some amp modulation.
I do enjoy me some seven lions.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Effectively using samples
« on: February 10, 2016, 08:20:10 pm »
When people use samples I hear amazing FX or a completely different sound when they use them. So my question is when people use samples do they just cut and rearrange, reverse the sound or add other plugins I'm not aware of in the process? I'm not very effective in using samples but, I'm practicing on trying to make them more interesting instead of just using an entire samples with no interesting twist what so ever. I usually attempt this by getting remix stems and working with those

Rarely will anyone use a sample AS IS.
The only ones I may use are for white noise, that's pretty much it.

i wouldn't suggest you do any of these comments, because all you're doing is just splitting the signal and not actually addressing the stereo image of said sound.

I recommend using some busses, and multiple layers to create the total effect you want for the instance of the bass.

I know one thing to get a big sound and covers your entire ears, is to have very little going on as that particular sound is played.

I suggest you have a drum set and just mess with sub bass and the bass synth, until you get to the point of adding in more stuff.

typically if one thing is taking up the entire audio space, it's going to dominate. It's a characteristic i see in many of these producers who focus on the siqq wubs.

Agreed. Mainly there wouldn't be many other sounds.
The goal would be to make it a tad bit wider though to fill out the room. Otherwise you may get a very centered sound.

I spend too much time on songs and end up ruining them/making them too complicated
I don't listen to anyone's advice besides other musicians
I disparage my girlfriend's opinion when she says she doesn't like a song.

I finished this a few months, but was very proud of this and never shared any music on here.
This actually won the contest.

I don't do them too often, but when I do, I like to do two "versions" of the bass. One filtered and quite low-passed for parts where other stuff is in. When the "drop" comes, I add another bass layer active in the lead-ish part of the spectrum. That creates the second, much bigger version of the bass line.

Hm probably a good idea to filter the frequencies. Have one be the low mids and more centered. The other be more higher and wider.
I'm having trouble filling the spectrum with one distinct 'sound' (whether that sound is composed of multiple instruments or not.)

Sound Design / Bass leads

What is the best techniques for having the bass be your lead?
My problem is a lot of the time it feels too flat and not big/fat sounding.

Any suggestions?

Well....this is a very good song and I'm a fan of Seven Lions so I hope I can give some insight.

1. The plucks are high passed with a lot of mids. Some delay, lots of reverb.
2. The chords are a supersaws/saw/growls all mixed into one to make them sound huge. It's a pretty common technique. It also comes down to chord design too. Simple close chords are gonna sound terrible. He probably inverts and uses a lot of 7ths/9ths.

Edit* PM me if you want a more in-depth conversation on how to do this. I make styles similar to his.

It's missing power at the low end/not enough sub. Sounds a little flat.
