Linear phase EQ is what?

Keep in mind, I use ableton's stock EQ8. I just try not to do a 24db slope, if I can.

You don't "have" to do anything.However cutting those super low frequencies would be a good idea.The more you cut,the more room you have for the other frequencies.That's one of the reasons you should practice subtractive equalizing.I always have an eq on the master which cuts below 20Hz and everything above 18K Hz and around.Also,if you,for any reason,want to boost some frequencies on eq on the master output,for boosting you should always linear phase eqs.

Do you feel you lose the sizzle at the top cutting at 18k?
I've tried it before and I don't know how I feel.

it's not sizzle, it's just the ultra ultra stuff that makes it hard as hell to listen to at loud volumes.

You adjust this by increasing the volume of the cymbal track.

It's like, trimming the fat, you get a more efficient means of controlling the overall aspect with in the mix because of it.

because you trimmed fat, you have more room to add in other flavors that will make the mix more bountiful in other elements you have.

This is a the way of subtractive philosophy.

I'll only add tiny bumps to specific frequencies that relate to the range i want that element to cover.

And the way i have my channels set up, i usually go from low end to hi end.

I get that, but 18k seems low. I'd maybe do a 6db slope at 20k.

Ive always read that you do not want to cut them on the master, but to do it on each individual track that has frequencies going into that range.

As for not hearing those frequencies, I know you can still feel certain frequencies. And correct me if im wrong as im no expert on the issue, but i thought that even though you cant hear those frequencies, you can still feel them.

You can, but not that low. That low is just pure rumble.

I'll typically throw a 6db slope at 35hz. Nothing is down there.

I'll write a part and I'll do a small mix/EQ on it and slap my mastering chain on. It gives a good idea of what the finish product may sound like.
I never leave mastering on though. Always turn it off.

I don't consider myself good or experienced, but...

The chorus has a big drop in volume. That is likely because you have a lot going on there that's around similar volumes, thus cluttering up the spectrum. EQing certain elements out should free up some space in the limiter. Right now though, it's so compressed and loses it's power.

Wasn't a really fan of the sub, mainly because it had zero movement while the basses were all moving. Made the track feel very boring to me.
Also agreed with above, the pads/supersaws you tried at 2:32 really lack power.

I too, but usually for percussive sounds. I'm thinking about glitching either the whole thing, or the major elements one by one in some wierd way.

Funny because I never glitch percussive sounds. I should tho.

But yeah, try it many different ways. Glitch the entire track as one (may sound bad) or choose elements that you think will give you the glitch sound you want. Although it's tough to tell what audio sounds will give you what....kind of an experience thing.

Usually I'd consider some melody variation or support melody in such a case, but glitching it sounds like more fun actually. What do you guys mean by "double time", though. Making a beat slower for that glitching part?

I mean: on the 2nd half of the last chorus speed up your drum hits (double time them) and make the rhythm move quicker. This may help climax the song or have the listener realize it's driving towards an end.

And yes, I love glitching audio. You can get some really unique sounds.

Love the atmosphere in the beginning. How did you do those glitchy/metallic sounds in the background?
I think the growl bass idea is real cool. Something is missing in terms of grit tho. They feel a bit muted and aren't as biting as I'd personally want.
The vocal used is a great idea, a little loud tho. You could probably drop it a db or 2.

Overall, I liked it. I say...don't over think it. But if you did want to overthink it: on the 2nd half of the last chorus, double time it and glitch the fuck out of it to drive it home. I'd be willing to help if you wanted, I really dig your vibes here. Would be a great ending song for a set.

This is just something of a curiosity question tbh, so the mods should feel free to banish it to the great internet recycling bin in the sky if they feel it's for the greater good of the forum.


Anyway, getting your own WIP stuck in your head: does this suggest that your tune is good, or merely catchy, or simply that you've spent too long listening to it? Or none of the above? Discuss. Or don't.

Could be any of those things. But it does happen from time to time.

Three things done to make this sound the way it is:

1. Modulated how wet the amp mod was


2. Modulated the volume to give it the cuts


3. modulated the autopan amount to give it some movement
