Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Novation Launchkey & Launch Control
« on: November 05, 2016, 04:42:08 pm »
what do you want to do with it? i would sit down and think about what, realistically, you would use the extra space for. planning on using it for live performances? think about all of the things you need to do to get your songs to play, figure out if you can pull it off on just the LaunchKey. want to use it in your music-making process? map out what knobs you would /actually/ use a lot.

i've got a 49-key midi keyboard (Akai MPK49), which comes with a bunch of pads and knobs. i LOVE mine, but i don't use the knobs nearly as much as i expected. i mainly use it for fiddling around and coming up with ideas -- if i were to do it again, i would rather have a 61-key keyboard without buttons/knobs, and then buy a Novation LaunchControl or something when i start doing performances. plus, that separation might let you have the keyboard routed to 1 synth, while the LaunchControl is affecting the drums, stuff like that.

first of all, CONGRATS! that sounds really cool. imo communication with the other artist is key. taking some time to find out what you both bring to the table, and what both of your visions are, will help a lot. get familiar with his other work if u arent, and encourage him to do the same!

get contracts, get payment arranged in writing. if anyone says "we don't need a contract, u can trust me," that's a pretty big red flag, but im guessing things are on the up and up there. for basic Industry(tm) stuff, one of the managers of Heroic Records has a lot of good resources. basically, now that there's money being exchanged, it's a good idea to treat it like a job, albeit a job that you enjoy a lot.

I first saw Worlds at Bestival a few months ago and that's gotta be the #1 spot for me. I met up with a bunch of people from /r/porterrobinson and we hung out at the front right at the rail all day from noon til Porter closed. Madeon went on right before Porter and did a great show there too. Back to back they were amazing, I can't wait to see them play together.
OMG that's so awesome, i used to go on that subreddit all the time back when worlds first came out, glad you had such a great time!!

side note, i love how y'alls experiences range from giant festivals to tiny dark clubs, very cool

so the Beat Cyphers that mussar hosted were some of the most fun ive had musically in ages. i was sorta thinking of starting those again, since he doesnt have the time to anymore.

i'd pick out some samples, we all make 1min beats at a given BPM, then i mix them  all into one awesome mix A La Team Supreme.

would anyone be interested in something like that again?

EDIT: Aric has started the cypher up again over in this thread!!

title. i'm seeing porter robinson and madeon's 'shelter' tour tomorrow and i'm SO excited to see what they have in store. porter's worlds tour was super important to me back in 2014, which got me thinking, what's y'all's favorite show youve seen? what made it so special?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Creating Original Samples
« on: September 28, 2016, 06:27:43 pm »
if this is what i think it is, UGH I HATE THIS ISSUE!

try looking under the Time Stretching section of the sampler, and adjust the pitch/mult/time to be back at "none." sometimes FL does that to samples in order to preserve what it thinks is the tempo, at the expense of being able to change the pitch. think of like, when you play a vinyl record faster, the pitch rises -- here FL is adjusting the speed of the sample but keeping the pitch the same, only it really doesnt need to because its a single drum hit. i think.

alternatively, you could load it into the Edison audio editor, which is extremely useful anyway and you should take some time to mess with!!

Sound Design / Re: BIGROOM KICK
« on: August 07, 2016, 08:35:51 pm »
anything from G# to C is tricky to make bass music in, just because of the way the frequencies fall. the human ear can generally hear only down to 20hz, meaning that B1 usually is very hard to hear in a sub: it will either be way too low, or too high and the kick sounds 'watery.' that's why so much EDM is in the D-F# range, theyre ideal keys in that the bass is as low as possible while still retaining its audibility.

(edit: gotdangit mussar u beat me to it)

compositionally you nailed that sound madeon did on Adventure REALLY well (that 9th chord especially feels very madeon-y) but also expand on it in ur own way. i like it a LOT. i think that the saws at 1:39 could be turned down, or the low end brought up, really the high end in general feels a little overbearing. fix that and this will honestly be amazing!!

also. if you want, we have a chat where we talk about music that's pretty cool, you should join! the links are in my bio~

@memizex:
you take the two samples i posted, and make a 1 minute  beat at 80bpm out of them. the second sample, the sweep goes at the beginning and end of your beat. that way, when everyone submits theirs, i can combine them all together into one listenable mix.

the soundcloud link i posted is the most recent one, as an example. each beat starts and ends with the sample, so they all flow into each other. does that help?

and @zacktaylor, awesome!!

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: key changes

man, i never even really thought about the key change in hourglass! and wontolla, that second drop in your song is very cool!! good idea about the circle of fifths, i've always only applied it to dj'ing, i guess using it the way it was intended would be a good idea haha.

WIPs / Re: Drewco - Exile (v1)

i like the ambience going on a lot. i'd work on the layering of the main drop synth, it feels a little bit flat with just the modern talking-y thing atm. ik it's public and has been up for a while, but i'd definitely keep playing with this, it has a lot of potential!!

HI ALL. mussar's been crazy busy with school and the interest kinda died down, so the beat cyphers stopped for a while. but, i've got enough time the rest of this summer that i'm going to take over for now. the cypher is back!!

here are The Rules for the Cypher, same as before:
  • You must use both samples provided, and you must compose in the BPM provided. One sample will be a transition sound you place at the start and end of your track, and the other is the featured sample for your beat.
  • You have to both post in this thread that you are joining AND private message me with your track in 32 or 24 bit, 44.1 kHz WAV or AIFF file format before 11:59 PM CDT on Saturday for your submission to count.
this is all pretty lax, but really, please do post whether youre in sooner than later!

we're working at 80bpm this week. here are The Samples:

so take these, and make a 1 minute (~21 bars) beat with it. send it to me via private message either here, or in the Slack room, which u can join here. here's the last cypher:

TL;DR: you take the two samples i posted, and make a 1 minute  beat at 80bpm out of them. the second sample, the sweep goes at the beginning and end of your beat. that way, when everyone submits theirs, i can combine them all together into one listenable mix. the soundcloud link i posted is the most recent one, as an example. each beat starts and ends with the sample, so they all flow into each other.

because i want to try and get as many people on board for 'season 2' as possible, i'm going to start this today, friday, and give it 2 extra days, so it ends at midnight next Sunday. lemme know if you have questions/suggestions. im so SO excited to see what y'all come up with.
