Finished Tracks / Re: Anywhere You Go (JudoChop Remix) | Melbourne Bounce
« on: December 21, 2016, 11:58:57 pm »
welcome to the forum!! this is cool, the fills (like at 3:07) are cool and the drums are very nice.

i think that it mostly sounds good, but is a little heavy on the high end. specifically, the FX during the drop, along with the supersaw hits, sound a little bit harsh. or maybe its that the bass needs some more presence. im not super well versed in melbourne bounce, so it might be fine, but it feels lacking in low end.

this is really clean overall though, best of luck in the contest.

this is one of my all time fave songs!!

i think the main thing holding this back is a lack of dynamics. the verses are all pretty loud, and the "drop" (the De La Soul verses). i would consider using a softer kick & 808, or just turning them down, during the verses. that way the drop hits harder. and also the mid-range frequencies feel kinda muddy in the chorus (0:18 ish), you might want to give those some attention. high passing the vocals a little bit and checking the relationship of the bass to the pads may help.

anyway i like what you did with the vocals & chords though, excited to see how it turns out!!

this is the same one from your last thread, right? sounds like its progressed a bit! the drums sound cleaner, which i like.

the vocal chops that come in at 1:20 sound like theyre kind of out of key, which might be intentional but id' be careful there. more than anything, again, it feels like it could still use some more layering and atmosphere. the little drum fills are nice additions, but i think more synth layers could really bring this to another level.

keep at it!!

i can second the clipping arktopolis mentioned, i have a kick/snares pack and a lot of the snares are VERY clipped. which isn't a bad thing - i usually end up clipping my drums a lot, but i like being able to do it on my terms haha.

sounds like youve got a good starting point, but it also sounds pretty empty.

i would try referencing some other trance songs you like. a lot of the genre's complexity comes from the layering of different sounds to create progression. that can manifest in poppier tracks like ilan Bluestone's stuff, or in more psy-trance-y stuff like Tezla with just a kick, basses, and ambience. or really whatever inspires you! pick it apart and find the different layers, maybe even try remaking it. it helps a lot. good luck with this, make sure to keep us updated!

woahhhhhh this is crazy. i love the panning you have going with the growls a LOT. also did you do the vocals??

i think the snare could use a little more high end/ sparkle - during the drop it gets kinda lost. also some of the FX sounds a bit loud (:40) but that's more personal taste.

this is seriously cool, i hope you finish it!! also you should join this place's slack channel! we've got a few ppl who talk there and it's fun. there are links in my bio:

i definitely agree with a lot of this.

however, i'd also argue that the other 80% of input does definitely have it's value! for me, that's learning new things about theory, production, and collecting inspiration. while the actual songwriting process only takes up a short portion of your total time, there's a lot that goes into it behind those sessions.

also question for y'all: who is your article is targeted towards? at first it seemed more helpful for someone trying to "go pro" with their music, but now that i think about it i wish i'd had that discipline since day 1 haha anyway good article, thanks for sharing!

Sound Design / Re: The "How do I make this sound?" thread

@zShinra
that sounds like skrillex took some of the vocals from his vault (he used to be a singer in a band so thats where his vocal cuts come from), and ran it through bitspeek

if you use Fruity Loops you can get pretty close using different time warping options on the sample and also the stock plugin "Pitcher" lets you mangle things pretty nicely, but Bitspeek will get u that a lot easier. hope that helps!

i agree with what marrow said! i just recently started layering sub kicks with more mid-high end kicks and it helps a lot. usually just an 808 will do, but using a synthesizer will give u a lot more control versus trying to tame an unruly sample.

Sound Design / Re: Lo-Fi Hip-hop??

either sampling from vinyl and getting all of the weird artifacts that can come with it, or emulating them like tieme typhonic said. try listening for individual elements in some lo-fi sounding tracks (drums, bass, sample) and look at them under an EQ with a spectrograph, see where things get cut off and come in at.

also 90% of the "lo-fi hip hop" scene on soundcloud is very reminiscent of the stuff j dilla and nujabes did. if youre not familiar with them, you're in for a treat!!

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / how do YOU listen to music?
« on: November 21, 2016, 04:53:49 pm »
this is something i've been wondering for a while. how do y'all enjoy music? in the car, while walking, on your bed? do you do other stuff while listening?

i noticed that when i listen to music it's usually while i'm doing coursework, so i end up not giving it much attention and thereby not enjoying it as much as when actively listening. im curious if anyone has noticed similar things.

wow.

i agree with what marrow said, you've been through a hell of a lot, don't discount the toll that all of that takes on you. at the same time, i hope you keep fighting to create, i believe that you can make it through.

if you need to vent or just need to talk, feel free to dm me or join the forum's chat (links are in my bio). stay strong, friend.
