Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / question about recording guitars!
« on: June 19, 2017, 02:12:02 am »
hey y'all!

ive been picking up guitar the past few months, currently an acoustic and i want to get an electric soonish. at some point want to start trying to record stuff on it. from what i've read, electric guitars are easier to record with an audio interface, and acoustics with a microphone. is that correct?

and, do you have any advice for what interfaces / microphones are a good place to start? any advice about recording for guitar in general, quirks youve noticed, anything is welcome!! everything ive tried producing till now has been 100% electronic so i'm kinda in the dark ahah.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / favorite lyricists?
« on: April 09, 2017, 04:08:16 pm »
i don't listen as intently to lyrics as i'd like, and i want to change that. who are some lyricists you enjoy? what are some lines and songs that stand out, and why? i'm open to any genre.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / weird plugins you like?
« on: February 02, 2017, 01:57:09 am »
so a lot of people know about plugins like Massive, Serum, OTT, Nexus, stuff like that. what are some hidden gem you've found? synths, effects, w/e.

i was looking around on KVR and i found this really goofy one, "mykazoo," that's 90% a joke, but i loaded on a bunch of processing and got some pretty cool sounds layering it with other stuff. another one, "doppler dome," simulates the doppler effect (things changing in pitch as they move away). you can use it for both natural effects, and use it in greater doses to make weird detune effects.

and for practical effects, ive been enjoying the FerricTDS saturator. it's a nice, soft tape saturator that adds nice harmonics. what about y'all?

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / In The Studio videos (again)
« on: January 14, 2017, 07:59:24 pm »
Mat Zo made an In-The-Studio thread a while ago that was super good, but that was ages ago. so post good In-The-Studio vids here! if we get enough videos i'll start a list.

i found these videos of Billain breaking down a few songs and they're super inspiring to me. a lot of drum and bass, specifically neurofunk, feels focused on sound design to the point of excluding all other aspects. Billain has insane technical chops, but also backs his music up with a lot of conceptual thinking behind his songwriting. the first two are more about sampling and his artistic process, while the third is more arrangement and work in FL Studio.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / goals for 2017
« on: January 13, 2017, 10:28:08 pm »
ive never been one for 'resolutions,' but hell with it, i'm not happy with where im going. maybe being specific will help that. post your goals here for posterity, so we can see if we pulled through next january.

what are your musical goals for this year?
how do you plan to get there?
when?

my goal is, i want to write a body of work, probably an EP, that finally feels like "me." and i want to release it with some kind of  accompanying visual element. and i want to play a show. i'll do it by writing new music daily, and looking for the threads in the things that inspire me to figure out who i am. and also connecting with as many other artists as possible, to learn from them and grow. i want to have the release finished around July, the visuals August, and a show lined up in September.

how about you?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / DAWs & live performances
« on: January 13, 2017, 10:14:14 pm »
hi y'all.

im curious, have any of you tried using your DAWs for performance based stuff? i've been wanting to experiment with that, and am wondering what your experiences are with that. i use FL right now, and am starting to dig in (on a very surface level) to it's performance mode, but i also hear that Ableton is really good for that stuff.

so what do you use? how do you use it, and what aspects of it do you like/dislike?

You Might Like... / what's your album of the year?
« on: December 22, 2016, 04:46:24 pm »
its that time of year where every critic is making their lists, what about YOU? what albums stood out to you this year? why do you like them? wht are the standouts from it?

im torn between frank ocean's "blonde" and noisia's "outer edges," can't honestly decide between the two. channel orange is a classic, but frank took a super bold left turn and it worked really well. and noisia... what is there to say? id argue no one does bass music as well as they do, from a purely technical standpoint, and some of the songwriting is really creative as far as dance goes.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / how do YOU listen to music?
« on: November 21, 2016, 04:53:49 pm »
this is something i've been wondering for a while. how do y'all enjoy music? in the car, while walking, on your bed? do you do other stuff while listening?

i noticed that when i listen to music it's usually while i'm doing coursework, so i end up not giving it much attention and thereby not enjoying it as much as when actively listening. im curious if anyone has noticed similar things.

so the Beat Cyphers that mussar hosted were some of the most fun ive had musically in ages. i was sorta thinking of starting those again, since he doesnt have the time to anymore.

i'd pick out some samples, we all make 1min beats at a given BPM, then i mix them  all into one awesome mix A La Team Supreme.

would anyone be interested in something like that again?

EDIT: Aric has started the cypher up again over in this thread!!

title. i'm seeing porter robinson and madeon's 'shelter' tour tomorrow and i'm SO excited to see what they have in store. porter's worlds tour was super important to me back in 2014, which got me thinking, what's y'all's favorite show youve seen? what made it so special?

HI ALL. mussar's been crazy busy with school and the interest kinda died down, so the beat cyphers stopped for a while. but, i've got enough time the rest of this summer that i'm going to take over for now. the cypher is back!!

here are The Rules for the Cypher, same as before:
  • You must use both samples provided, and you must compose in the BPM provided. One sample will be a transition sound you place at the start and end of your track, and the other is the featured sample for your beat.
  • You have to both post in this thread that you are joining AND private message me with your track in 32 or 24 bit, 44.1 kHz WAV or AIFF file format before 11:59 PM CDT on Saturday for your submission to count.
this is all pretty lax, but really, please do post whether youre in sooner than later!

we're working at 80bpm this week. here are The Samples:

so take these, and make a 1 minute (~21 bars) beat with it. send it to me via private message either here, or in the Slack room, which u can join here. here's the last cypher:

TL;DR: you take the two samples i posted, and make a 1 minute  beat at 80bpm out of them. the second sample, the sweep goes at the beginning and end of your beat. that way, when everyone submits theirs, i can combine them all together into one listenable mix. the soundcloud link i posted is the most recent one, as an example. each beat starts and ends with the sample, so they all flow into each other.

because i want to try and get as many people on board for 'season 2' as possible, i'm going to start this today, friday, and give it 2 extra days, so it ends at midnight next Sunday. lemme know if you have questions/suggestions. im so SO excited to see what y'all come up with.
