It starts at 2:50 and lasts until around 4:18.

I wouldn't take it too seriously. I think you did a great job with this track. I'm just being too picky. Sounds like something I'd hear on anjunabeats. It's the kind of music that my me and my dad like to go back to back on during our sets.

I love the atmosphere the most. The mix sounds pretty solid to me. I didn't find the vocals to be too loud. It seemed pretty well balanced. I did find that four bar chord progression to get a bit repetitive after awhile though.

If I'm making music and I'm REALLY into it then I can't sleep. I won't want to go to sleep. I've had times where I've been at my dads house 20 minutes away and have woken up at 2am only to drive back to my house because I felt inspired and wanted to write music. I don't think this is healthy but when I'm working on something and I just had an idea I HAVE to get it down ASAP because I don't want to risk losing the idea.

I used to work full time and go to school full time and that's when I couldn't just stay awake whenever tf I wanted. Thankfully I'm only going to school now so I have certain days during the week when I can stay up till 7am if I desired to do so.

Sounds clean to me too. Cool song btw. :)

Happy you enjoyed it at least.  ;)

MIX IN KEY

This came naturally to me because I learned music before I learned to DJ. My dad used to mix songs with totally different keys in his sets and it used to bug the hell out of me once my ears were finally developed enough to hear the clashing notes. If you don't know music theory or aren't able to recognize songs with similar keys then I'd HIGHLY recommend downloading a software called Mixed In Key. It figures out all the keys of the song for you and adds them to the id3 tags that way you can tell which songs will flow into each other.

Another tip as a DJ is don't kill the dance floor. Be very aware of the drums in your mix. The drums is what makes people wanna dance. If you remove the drums at the wrong time then you can totally KILL a dance floor.

Finally, be aware of the amount of energy within your mix. If you're playing at the chorus and you're at the climax of your track then you don't want to mix it into a song that is barely getting started. This will also kill the dance floor.

it'll get worse until you realize you don't know any thing, then you can begin to know things.

Looks like it's time for me to do some reevalutating.  :(

I work just like you. I actually can't write a melody to save my life if I don't have the chord progression down. Having the harmony is just so important to me when it comes to composing melodies. Try not to think of the harmony as a separate entity from the melody. If you're playing a Cmaj7 chord C E G B but the melody is playing a D then what you really have is C E G B D, a Cmaj9 chord.

Likewise, if your chord is a dominant in the key of C Major. (G B D F) but the melody is playing a A then the chord is actually G B D F A, a Gdom9 chord.

You learn to think this way when studying counterpoint and part writing. If a note from the melody hits at the same moment as the chord change then I just consider it to be a part of the chord. All the notes that the melody plays after the chord hits can be analyzed as passing, neighbor, or chord tones.

Nah, that's pretty clean mixdown.

they made room for the bass by reducing the sub portion on the kick drum.

Can never have enough bass lol

Damn... I was so sure of myself too. There goes my engineer self esteem.  :'(

Mixing/Mastering / Does Anyone Else Think This Mix Has Too Much Bass?

I was listening to it and I really love the song but my engineer ears picked up on the mixdown and I really felt like there was too much bass.

Is it just me or is the bass too loud?

Specifically at around 0:18.

Every single day from the time I go to sleep to the time I wake up it haunts my head in repetitive motion. How do I get better, improve..? It's come to the point where it's all I can think of the entire day without rest even when I eat hell when I sleep I dream of it...I don't know if this obsession to become better even greater than I was yesterday every single day is healthy or not but, I like it.... would this be a problem then?

It's good that you want to improve but be VERY careful about this attitude. It's this exact same attitude that led me to neglect a lot of things in my younger years. Basically... don't forget to eat, exercise, take breaks, and give attention to your loved ones. You don't need to become a savant in order to get better and improve. Keep in mind that when you want something extremely bad and aren't able to get it you can easily end up getting frustrated.

In my experience the best way to learn a software is through trial and error. I use Logic Pro X and when I was learning logic pro 9 I took a video course as beginner. That course didn't do much for me.

Never know though so go ahead and give it a shot.

Soundprank never gets old.

Enjoyed that one.  ;D

Just listened to this gem today. Thought I'd include it even though it's not EDM.

Would you have any tips or recommend anything?

Listen to your favorite chord progressions and transcribe them into your DAW. Analyze them. You don't need to know music theory if you're able to come up with your own method of doing things. You already know that you have a taste for seventh chords. That's a great start.

I'd also highly recommend transcribing or learning piano music. Learning songs on the piano is the best way to learn how music is arranged on the instrument. If you can get something to sound good on a piano then arranging it for electronic music becomes a breeze.

Finally...

As far as harmony you can also say I have minimal understanding like I know what a primary, diminished, augmented is compound intervals, major minor 1, 2, 3, 4 etc like I understand them but how to use them properly or mix them I don't so I don't understand

STUDY DIATONIC HARMONY

That will teach you how to use...

I love all those artists and songs.

Do you actually play piano? It doesn't sound like it to me based off of the mp3. The reason why they aren't transferring well with electronic instruments is because of the notes that you've chosen. Even though your chords are in key, they don't flow into each other well. It also doesn't sound orchestrated in a way that a pianist would actually play it.

Do you actually understand harmony or are you just guessing a bunch of random notes together hoping that they somehow fit? Zedd uses a lot of seventh chords and undiatonic chord progressions. If you want to write chords like him then you should study seventh chords and proper voice leading. Limit yourself to four note chords and keep as little motion as possible in between the two middle voices.
