The nature of mixing a wide stereo track and then playing it back on a mono device is that you're bound to deal with instruments disappearing which is why some people advise to mix in mono.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing A Real Drumset

It's how you blend the stuff.

I am a little iffy on this thing, but my instincts tell me to apply effects to the close mics.

and then blend it with the room mic. Or forgo the room and just use VST.

You should look into convolution reverb and find some OG plate impulse responses.

http://www.openairlib.net/

that site has some pretty dank stuff. That whole site came with a free update for the convolution reverb update, and they have some pretty awesome plate impulse reasponses.

I find that the beefy settings work really well on a drum kit.

I'm very wary on forgoing the room mics and simply replacing it with a room reverb plugin. I mean... I'm sure it would work out and I could just use a room reverb as an aux send on all the close mics. It's just that I kinda want to learn the more conventional practices before getting into anything crazy if that makes any sense.

Another thing I was also curious about is whether to start the mix at the overheads or the close mics. I'm also confused about whether to add the room mics after the overheads or after the close mics.

God mixing acoustic drums are so much more annoying than electronic drums.  :(

Don't give up your sanity as a human being for music.

I think I've mentioned this in another post of mine. Before I was a producer, I was pretty deadset on becoming a serious guitar player. I was basically a jerk to anyone or anything that prevented me from reaching my goals and would do everything I could to ensure that all my free time went to studying music.

This was a stupid decision cause I missed out on a lot of "stupid high school stuff" because of it and now I'm stuck with all this knowledge with nothing to really show for it.

So yeah. It's not necessary to turn yourself into a savant to get better at this or anything for that matter.

Mixing/Mastering / Mixing A Real Drumset

I've been making some rock stuff lately since I've been getting back into my roots.

It's impossible to make rock without mixing a real drumset obviously. I've never mixed acoustic drums and I'm finding it somewhat challenging due to the various mics that you need to deal with and the bleed.

Kick-in
Kick-out
Snare-Top
Snare-Bottom
Hi-hat
Tom 1
Tom 2
Floor Tom
Overheads
Room Mics

Anyways... My question is... Do any of you use an actual reverb on the snare track? The room mics to my understanding are responsible for creating the ambience of a drumset. Would using a reverb plugin on any of these channels be a bad move and take away from the natural sound of the drumset?

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: When to use chords or melodies

For example In the chorus of the song say I have a pluck sound from a synth, do I write a chord progression or melody?

That's entirely up to you.

Keep in mind that if you'd like to get the best of both worlds you can use both. Chord progressions can contain melodies like in this track.

Obviously chords contain more notes so they sound bigger but you can always (in massive) just bump up the number of voices per not to make melodies sound bigger

Sure. It doesn't matter how many notes are playing. The way you get "bigger" sounds is by emphasizing the correct frequencies. Making sure that the bass and the mid's are properly being represented.

Also what sounds should I use chords or melodies for?

This is also entirely up to you.

You should use the sound that best represents the chords or melody. With real instruments it's lot more obvious because of the natural limitations of the instruments. Playing fast tremolos on a single note for example isn't best suited for a piano. With electronic music you don't really deal with those limitations though.

? Is there any sounds I shouldn't write chords with and any sounds I shouldn't write melodies with?

I'd avoid writing chords in the very low bass frequencies because you lose a lot of note clarity in that range. Muddiness will begin to take over.

It's unfortunate that yet another music icon has passed away. I've never been a HUGE fan of Prince but his influence within his era is undeniable.

I don't think every producer needs to innovate.

Is it ethical to take someone's song and remaster it for your own tastes?
I don't think so. People do this all the time with EQing in iTunes or even in their own cars. Usually people are bass whores and boost the thing to +6 all the time.
