One hour is really comfortable for me to figure out what I want to do with the track from a melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic perspective.

It really just depends on the form of the song combined with the complexity of the musical content. I like to think in themes so if a song is based on just an A section then it'll naturally take less time than if It were to contain an A, B, and C section.

If I'm writing with traditional part-writing/counterpoint in mind or start working with extended chords then things can take longer.

The mindset isn't about where you're getting paid to do something, it's the motivation to DO that something. You think that dildo maker was growing up and saying "one day i wanna make dildos until i die"?

This is, without a doubt, the greatest post I have yet to have read on this forum  ;D

Please... I can't stop laughing.

Let me put a twist on this. I believe THuztle is right. It all starts with your mindset. But it's definitely not so black and white.

Through last 6 years I kinda got used to having very little positivity in life. Got really numb. Nothing really mattered, because I knew if I continue to screw up everything, I'll stay moreless wherever I am now.

Lately though, few really cool musical things happened. Stuff that gets you lock yourself in car, smile like crazy, hit the wheel and almost scream "yessss". ...especially after so much "numb time".

...but then reality stroke back. Same as before. Grey, with not much to be happy about. But now it's different, because I know i CAN have better mindset. But it's not happenning. As always. But this time I care and it kills me. Daily. Which ironically ends with even worse mindset than the numb one...

Again, I don't mean to be overly depressing, but I think those who make happiness their goal end up miserable people. It's a feeling that comes and goes just like every other emotion out there. It can't last forever because it's a temporary experience caused by neuro-chemicals in your brain.

Learning to not give a crap whether I felt "happy" and just doing things has been much more productive than waiting for the perfect mindset to show up because as you've mentioned it's highly elusive. It'll be there one day and then the next day you end up numb again wondering what the hell happened.

If someone across the world can work 8 hours a day manufacturing dildos in a factory then why should I not be able to do the same with music regardless of whether I feel happy or not?

I understand your example but the only thing that I don't really get about "mindset" is what makes the "right" one in the first place.

I mean you got all these guys with different philosophies on what the proper mindset should be. I'm convinced that If I were to spend my time searching for the proper way of thinking about things I would end up dead before finding the true answer.

Hate me for taking it too far but this subject has had me doomed for a long time.

I'm not to sure about the whole "mind" thing tbh. I mean a positive attitude will benefit someone anywhere in life but if you sit there and wait until you find the "right" mental outlook on things before you get started then you'll never get things done. You'll sit there stuck trying to find the right "state of mind" and then when things go wrong you'll try to adjust your way of thinking to adapt.

I spent an entire year trying to find the right "mindset" until deciding that so much of that time would've been so much better spent just doing things because a perfect mindset is just impossible to find.

REALLY digging that percussion section. The hi hats sound great!

This is drum step at least to my understanding.

I've always thought of it as dubstep at dnb tempo. Not too sure what that standard tempo is though. Never made a drum step track in my life so maybe others could correct me if I'm wrong.

You should be able to pick up djing in 1/100th of the time it takes to pick up production. At least that's how it's been in my experience.

I recall a porter robinson or zedd interview in which they said their first show they DJ'd with traktor and the mouse... Not really sure how that worked out.

Ideally you'd need a dj controller and software.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Arrangement Symmetry
« on: April 26, 2016, 01:02:31 am »
How much symmetry do you guys like within your arrangement? By symmetry I'm referring to repetition of a  section after it's already been played. Do you guys ever just straight up copy and paste a section of a track so that it repeats the same thing twice?

I've noticed that a degree of symmetry is necessary within an arrangement that way the track maintains a clear structure. I've never had a section of a track repeat more than twice though. And by twice I mean copying and pasting a section and having it repeat the exact same thing later on within the track. I feel like if a section of an arrangement is repeated more than twice without any sort of variation then it gets boring.

So how many times do you guys like to repeat sections within arrangements and when you do repeat sections do you just do a ditto copy and paste or do you guys like to add variation?

EDIT: I found a random project file on the internet and added some text to it to help illustrate my point. Notice how some of the sections in this project file contain perfect symmetry? How many of you guys have that in your arrangements?

Mine because I'm full of myself. (Please don't take me seriously)

On a separate note Graham from therecordingrevolution and dave pensado's tutorial videos have taught me more than Seamless. (No offense to him)
