I've never had good results with posting up tracks for feedback because generally speaking people don't care unless they really like what they're hearing. I've had much better results by messaging producers that I actually respect and asking them for feedback.

Besides, if I write something that's bad, I don't need to hear other peoples opinions to validate that. Call it selfish but If I write something good I know it and if it's trash I know it as well. What's truly rare is someone who has the ability to point out why something sounds bad and how to actually fix it and make it better. I've been searching for someone with those skills for a long time.

He uses songwriters, like most other pop musicians do. It's not like it's any big secret - the writers are credited on his tracks. Are you gonna hate on Bieber for having PooBear write his verses (instead of for being a shmuck), or Beyonce for not writing Lemonade by herself?

Yes.

Dang. Looks like I've spoken too soon.  ;D You guys are old enough to be my uncles lmao.

I guess just let this thread die.

Seriously. Madeon, Zedd, Juventa, Porter, Nitrofun, Grey, Au5, WRLD...

I feel like so many of these producers are like 18-25 or became successful at around that time period.

Even on this forum. I noticed a lot of us are college students. Maybe I have a confirmation bias?

I actually highly disagree.

When I'm in the 75% stage of completion I like to bounce it out and listen to the track on my iPod BEFORE I go back to the studio.

At that point of the production stage there's often 60+ tracks which can make it incredibly hard for me to focus on fixing issues while I'm in my DAW. I like to listen to the track away from my DAW that way I can write down a list of issues that bug me as I'm listening.

(snare to loud, kick to punchy, etc...)

That way when I get back into the studio I immediately know what it is that I need to fix and I'm not bouncing around all these tracks trying to figure out which one needs to be fixed.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Question About Headroom
« on: May 09, 2016, 03:58:17 pm »
Tbh my main concern was that since the limiter catches the peaks it would change the sound of the mix as I'm mixing into it. I like being able to see which instruments are clipping the master but that's not really an option with the limiter on. The main reason why I use it is because of volume reasons. I have a habit of gain staging instruments really low since digital synthesizers don't really deal with the noise to floor ratio issue. I know you can just say turn up the monitor levels on your speakers which I do follow but the thing is it makes it harder for me to reference mix. When I play the music on iTunes it comes out super loud. Its kind of annoying even though its just a bother that can easily be fixed.

I think from now on ill stick to just using the utility plugin to boost the volume since it maintains the transients.

Doesn't diplo use ghost producers lol

I guess I won't stress about it. I just wasn't sure whether this was leading to poor mixing consequences. I've been lowering the faders proportionally for a very long time but never really understood why so many people would stress the importance of headroom.

I think I understand now a little bit better.

piggybacking off of this, i have a stupid question. i've never used an external audio interface, just the built-in soundcard on my pc. is there that much of a difference in sound quality between the two, or are interfaces more for recording stuff?

I've done both before. I don't think you can't get a good quality by using the built in sound card on your pc. All of the guitar covers I made in my youtube videos were recorded using the built in sound card on my old mac.

The whole point of the audio interface for me is so I can easily switch between instruments. I already have my bass, guitar, and microphone setup into my scarlett so if I want to record something I can just open up an audio track in logic and hit record. It's also a lot easier to do gain staging with audio interfaces because they come with knobs to adjust the gain of the input and signals that will tell you when you're clipping. Not to mention that I own a condenser microphone which can only be ran underneath 48v phantom power which is provided by my scarlett.

So yes. Interfaces are more for recording stuff. I don't think you can plugin in studio monitors without them either. Take that last statement with a big grain of salt.

Scarlett 18i8 :D

I got it because the 2i2 only had 2 inputs. I like to plug in my bass, guitar, and microphone simultaneously though and got tired of having to adjust the levels all the time whenever I had to take one out.

Mixing/Mastering / Mixing Into A Limiter
« on: May 08, 2016, 02:35:11 pm »
I'm not going to lie. I have a VERY bad mixing habit. For some reason, I can't really get my mixes to sound as good if I don't mix into an ozone preset.

Go ahead and bag on me all you want lol. I feel like this is limiting me but I'm not sure how. I've never really understood why people advised to not mix into a limiter. Is it because they make it so that you can't see your peaks?

Why is it advised that people don't mixed into limiters? Could someone please name me reasons why I SHOULDN'T mix into a limiter that way I can actually understand it for once and stop doing it?

Mixing/Mastering / What Order Do You Mix?
« on: May 08, 2016, 02:30:40 pm »
Hey guys. I've been interested in the workflow of other mix engineers lately.

When you start your mix do you bring all your faders down to zero and then bring them up one at a time from there? Also, when balancing out sounds, do you try to get that balance at first without using any plugins?

I've seen videos where engineers are able to get a decent balance without using any EQ's compressors, or plugins at all and it was a huge eye opener for me. I always thought that in order to get a good balance it was absolutely necessary to have these plugins. Once again however I'm underestimating the volume faders.

Finally... at what stage of the mixing process do you begin to add effects like reverb and delay? Do you add them AFTER everything has already been compressed and EQ'd or do you not really give AF and just do it all at once?

Thanks for your thoughts guys.

^ Off-topic, but declipping is actually possible to some extent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kcq0zsdJRxE.

Wow ;D

Thanks for sharing arktopolis. I actually didn't know that. I'm sure that knowledge will be useful in the future.

Makes sense. I can see how a signal recorded past -0.0db would be impossible to bring down if it were recorded like a vocal or a guitar.

Can't fix a clipped signal. I just wanted some clarification on the issues. I wasn't aware that some daws don't offer the option to bring all the faders down at once.

Guess I gotta love logic even more for that. <3

Mixing/Mastering / Question About Headroom
« on: May 08, 2016, 06:41:05 am »
Why are people always stressing about headroom? I get that things need to be below -0db and stuff but if anything clips I can just bring the entire mix down in logic pro by selecting all the volume faders and dragging them all down at once. It keeps the balance the same but lowers the levels.

So why do people stress about headroom as if getting it right in the beginning of a mix is so important it's gonna cause irreplaceable damage if it's wrong at first?
