Mixing/Mastering / Question About Headroom
« on: May 08, 2016, 06:41:05 am »
Why are people always stressing about headroom? I get that things need to be below -0db and stuff but if anything clips I can just bring the entire mix down in logic pro by selecting all the volume faders and dragging them all down at once. It keeps the balance the same but lowers the levels.

So why do people stress about headroom as if getting it right in the beginning of a mix is so important it's gonna cause irreplaceable damage if it's wrong at first?

Mixing/Mastering / Mixing Multitracks
« on: May 05, 2016, 06:54:22 am »
How many of you guys mix multitracks?

I just discovered these and imo mixing them is THE BEST WAY to practice mixing. The reason why is because you don't need to worry about trying to write/arrange/compose the song at the same time since it's already laid out for you. If the song sounds bad then you KNOW it's because of the mix.

This website has a bunch of multitracks that are useful for practicing. Just thought I'd drop it here for those who may find it useful.

Mixing/Mastering / Rap Vocals vs Pitched Vocals
« on: May 04, 2016, 05:21:36 am »
Should the mixing be approached differently or the same?

I've kinda been thinking about it lately. Some of you might think it's a stupid question which is fair enough but do you think we should strive to be like our favorite artists? When I say that I mean should we make an effort to copy and sound like them in every shape or form?

I ask because I'm inspired by a lot of artists but I can never sound like them you know? Whenever I try to sound like Zedd, Grey, or Joe Hisaishi I just end up sounding like me. At first that was really annoying but I'm kind of learning to accept that I'll never be able to sound like either of them.

Then again it's like you can learn a lot by copying other artists. Shoot that's how I learned sound design and instruments in general. So the fine line is a bit confusing you know?

Thoughts anyone?

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Arrangement Symmetry
« on: April 26, 2016, 01:02:31 am »
How much symmetry do you guys like within your arrangement? By symmetry I'm referring to repetition of a  section after it's already been played. Do you guys ever just straight up copy and paste a section of a track so that it repeats the same thing twice?

I've noticed that a degree of symmetry is necessary within an arrangement that way the track maintains a clear structure. I've never had a section of a track repeat more than twice though. And by twice I mean copying and pasting a section and having it repeat the exact same thing later on within the track. I feel like if a section of an arrangement is repeated more than twice without any sort of variation then it gets boring.

So how many times do you guys like to repeat sections within arrangements and when you do repeat sections do you just do a ditto copy and paste or do you guys like to add variation?

EDIT: I found a random project file on the internet and added some text to it to help illustrate my point. Notice how some of the sections in this project file contain perfect symmetry? How many of you guys have that in your arrangements?

Mixing/Mastering / Mixing A Real Drumset
« on: April 22, 2016, 06:59:11 pm »
I've been making some rock stuff lately since I've been getting back into my roots.

It's impossible to make rock without mixing a real drumset obviously. I've never mixed acoustic drums and I'm finding it somewhat challenging due to the various mics that you need to deal with and the bleed.

Kick-in
Kick-out
Snare-Top
Snare-Bottom
Hi-hat
Tom 1
Tom 2
Floor Tom
Overheads
Room Mics

Anyways... My question is... Do any of you use an actual reverb on the snare track? The room mics to my understanding are responsible for creating the ambience of a drumset. Would using a reverb plugin on any of these channels be a bad move and take away from the natural sound of the drumset?

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Is The Conscious Mind A Barrier?
« on: April 18, 2016, 03:08:44 am »
I've been thinking lately. When I improvise on an instrument I don't really think consciously about what I'm doing. I just do it. When I start to think about things I start making mistakes.

I've noticed the same thing when writing music. I write my best stuff when I'm not really thinking about anything. I just do it. When I start to think about stuff I begin to second guess myself and analyze things far too much.

Do you guys think that the conscious mind can be a barrier? Particularly by overthinking things and analyzing too much instead of just doing things and not really giving a crap as to "WHY" things work?

I mean... even with engineering. I heard Avicii never even knew what a compressor did from a technical perspective for a very long time. He just sort of heard how it would affect the sound and trusted his ears.

Mixing/Mastering / Does Anyone Else Think This Mix Has Too Much Bass?
« on: April 13, 2016, 08:48:00 pm »
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI367dIjwPo

I was listening to it and I really love the song but my engineer ears picked up on the mixdown and I really felt like there was too much bass.

Is it just me or is the bass too loud?

Specifically at around 0:18.

Mixing/Mastering / Peaks Increase When Removing Sub-bass
« on: April 10, 2016, 11:58:09 am »
Just for an experiment I set a kick to -0.0 db and slapped an EQ on it. I removed the 40hz frequencies and I expected the peaks to get lower. Instead, the kick was now hitting at +1.1db.

What gives? Doesn't removing the sub bass INCREASE head room. Not reduce it?

Sound Design / Are Greys Guitar's Real?
« on: April 09, 2016, 06:13:05 am »
This has been bugging the absolute hell out of me for the past few weeks. I've been playing guitar for 6 years. Yet... I cannot tell whether the ones in grey's remixes are real or fake. Certain things make me think that they're real but then certain things sound fake to me like the fast sixteenth notes at 0:36.

Are they just processed really hard or something? Even the sound of the pick striking the strings sounds like it's extremely emphasized to the point of being unnatural like at 2:34. The work is INCREDIBLY realistic from an orchestration point of view on nearly all of grey's songs. The fingerings are ones I'm familiar with.

Certain songs sound more "fake" but then this one right here sounds like it's the realest of them all.

Seriously. If this is a sample library then does anyone know which one?

What is the difference between say mixing in a studio vs mixing live sound? I mean you're dealing with the same tools correct?

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Faster Ways To Create Vocal Swells
« on: April 01, 2016, 06:15:10 pm »
Are there any faster ways to create reverse vocal swells other than slapping a 100% reverb on a vocal, bouncing it and reversing the file?
