Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Producers that defy aging

aphex twin is an obvious one. another would be james murphy from LCD soundsystem. Oneohtrix Point Never is nearly 40 im sure too. Then in hip hop Dr Dre is still a force to be reckoned with, as is DJ Premier and Mike Dean.

Ok so I had a second listen just to be sure. This is a really great song, good tension and release. I will give my feedback on the one part I'm not sure about though: the intro bars. Their is something that doesn't quite groove here for my taste, that might be a thing you are doing for tension and release with this stumbling motion before it really gets going. I think you could do with losing the clap in it and instead have a clap fill just before the kick drum enters and then put in the clap.

think this one is nearly done. some highs in the mix could be made less hot. Think I will do that after leaving it rest for a while so ive fresh ears for it.

Tell me what you all think.

If anyone is curious about actual tools to do multichannel 3d mixes look into Spatium which are a free set of tools that use ambisonics.(which i dont nearly know enough of).

Anyway you can set how many channels/speakers you have (goes into double digits) and also pan using different techniques such as flocking and gravity algorithms. Modelling swinging pendulums or simply  creating your own pan paths. I've used this in a rudimental manner for a work before and it worked great.

So that is why the standard is 44.1k.

right i know all of that regarding the Nyquist frequency and sampling rate I was only asking to see if ultra high fidelity replication made a big difference to you guys as mixing and mastering engineers

ahhh I getcha. for me no it doesnt! Bitrate on the other hand....

The point of 44.1k is because of foldback and the Nyquist Frequency. The Nyquist frequency is the minimum rate at which a signal can be sampled without introducing errors, which is twice the highest frequency present in the signal. That was taken right from a quick google.

Anyway 44.1k comes about because half of this is 22k which is typically above the upper limit for what can be heard by a human ear.

A quick explanation of foldback.
Assume your sampling rate is 1000 hz (this number just makes it easier) and you record a signal that is at 1,100 hz. This is 100 hz over your sampling rate and it will be recorded at 900 hz introducing error to your recording.
So that is why the standard is 44.1k.

I think a big part of creating music that is in someway 'you' is having a wide palette to draw from when creating music and knowing when and where to draw from that palette wether that be familiarity with things that apply directly: certain structures, rhythms, melodic and harmonic methods,  synthesis techniques and extending into things that apply more abstractly: philosophies, inspirations etc.

Knowing something new such as counterpoint can only help. Try using it out maybe when writing a chord sequence dictating the harmonic structure of the song. Try it out in different ways and maybe you get a result you like.

Be Still Focus - very nice, Bibio-esque in places and fly lo. In the first half though something feels off with the mix and leads to a little dullness in the more melodic elements

Trek through the woods - very very nice

In general I like this idea of keeping songs very short and making that compelling and focused. Gave your soundcloud a follow, cant wait to hear more

At the start the flute feels a bit hot compared to the piano.
Love the bass growl thing that comes in from 0:53.

Dont know if its because of the style of the music but I wish the melody would change up a bit!

hope that helps. track is promising

big sounds in this song.
I would say it seems too loud. For this style I would like the clap to be more prominent. Try bring out more.
Also for something labeled progressive it doesn't really progress? Is it the same chords in the background the whole time? Maybe try change up their voicings or even timing very slightly.

Plenty of "contemporary" classical stuff. Which is a pretty large umbrella to be honest. Let me share a few things I think are easy enough for anyone to enjoy -- stuff that is weird with some catchiness.

caroline shaw - Allemande (partita for 8 voices) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mukrVsKqTs&list=PLqdFJzgdyvWnzexNx9L4lqY33tHGzt1gg
joel love - synchronicity in purple minor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OKSKQ-Jhm4
oh and less catchy but super psyched to fuck
gerard grisey - partials https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqzukP_BtW8

Really really great.

Only thing I'll say is some of the percussion sounds way too static. Like the sound quality doesn't even change slightly. Like the high woodblock sound at 1:08. It is a little bit distracting in what is otherwise a great song. Maybe some volume automation? or mess with the waveform slightly - drag some grains around

Age shouldn't be a factor guys on the criticism given if it is good criticism. You guys no doubt want to get better (like everyone) and so really any advice should be welcome if its good advice.

Your melodies in general are good, however, it feels like there are few flubbed notes here and there - timing issues and maybe one or two wrong notes. If you are recording in with a midi keyboard or something dont be too satisfied with your first 'goodish' attempt but rather use that as a template to get something tight sounding.

I agree with Manducator that the loudness of the song is actually bringing down the effect its elements have. And some of my songs are stupid loud too.

Both those things said, your melodic sense and structure sense are good (aside from what I already said ;) ).
