Mixing/Mastering / Re: Reverb on the entire mix?
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:41:20 am »
People have been saying that I should be sending everything to a reverb bus and this adds some glue to the track. I saw Flux Pavilion do it in that new in-the-studio video of how he made Emotional but he did it inside Ozone 5.

- My question is do you really just send everything to the reverb bus? Even your kick and basses? Or should you EQ out low frequencies and just do bus reverb for like >500Hz?

Edit: What other kind of settings should your reverb bus have?

Thanks!

Can i get a link to that in the studio?

I linked it on the first page, about midway down

The only time I have ever seen a reverb on the whole mix it was flux's emotional breakdown (@19:00): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLBPLyOzN_I

any time I've tried it or heard of other people trying it though they say it's not good

two things that i was wondering... one being, i saw some tutorials on the popular chord effect and volume shaper was being used in FL Studio.  is there any way to do this same effect in Logic X?

i tried messing with the gain but the parameters are really hard to automate with that.

the effect i'm going for is in this song Grant Bowtie - High Tide at 56 seconds

and also, does anyone have any production techniques to get the similar sound that he uses?

I think you can accomplish that sound with just some ADSR and the chords repeated very fast, doesn't sound like too much filter action going on.  I've been working on a high tide remake with my friend and when I get closer i can post it

Awesome to get mentioned on here already!  ;D

I bet about 95% of my synth sounds are probably made in Sylenth. I like to keep my sounds simple and clean.

I'd say future bass is definitely more about songwriting than it is about sound design. Like a few people here already mentioned, adding 2nds, 4ths and 7ths to your chords will help give them a bit more depth and emotion (not just for future bass obviously). I tend to use a lot of dissonant harmonies in my chords as well, I think a lot of people aren't used to using those types of harmonies in their chords. My music teacher in high school once asked me to describe a dissonant harmony and I answered "they always sound ugly" and he said "not if you use them in the right way", and that actually completely changed the way I wrote my chords.

Also something I absolutely looooove is using nice clean sounding, slightly detuned saw (most of the time using 2 voices) synth leads for my main melodies or solos. I use an LFO to add vibrato and then I automate the gain to make it sound funkier, I also use a lot of pitch bending and/or portamento as well to give it a bit more depth. To make it sound smoother I always use a nice lowpassed ping pong delay. Highpassing out anything below 120 Hz on the leads always seems to help with that as well.

One little trick I always use is slightly bit crushing the leads to give them a little 'crunch'. If I'm using a bit crusher though, I always lowpass anything above 20K, you might not hear those super high frequencies but your dog might. :( Even if you're not hearing it it might still clean up your mix and bit crushers always add nasty unwanted frequencies.

hi david

I've also learned from you that putting a small but drastic pitch envelope on most synths gives it a nice little punch

Oh woah, I remember you from Skype a couple years back, its cool to see that you're still doing music. This is a really cool track, too. The vibes are solid, the percussion keeps my attention, and in my opinion, it's a much more interesting song than the remix. This would go really well with a lot of songs in a mix, but I guess that's pretty common for house. Keep it up!

Dude!  I remember you too :) How's it going?  Glad to see you're still around.  Thanks for wishing me a happy birthday on skype this year  8)

That bass has somewhat of an Oliver feel to it and I'm completely okay with that.

Love me some oliver... those guys are insane

Piano at the end sounded like Language  ;) It could use some reverb to make it sound massive

You have all the synths in place, I just think they don't sound full.  I'd try to A/B your mixes with other similar artists or inspirations like Puppet who have a close style to what you're going after.  When you a/b you should be able to hear what you're hitting and what you're lacking in

The two main things that stuck out to me with this song was the sample choice and the drum pattern.  When you have repetitive melodic content, sometimes it's really entertaining to mix up the drum pattern and make it very dynamic.  Love the snare sound, but I think the build clap sound could be pitched to better fit.

Camelcrusher (rip  :'( ) was amazing back when it was alive.  Does anyone still have a download for it?

Really good smexscope -http://bram.smartelectronix.com/plugins.php?id=4

definitely chair dance material.  Don't see how this doesn't have more plays.  Personally I like more drastic sidechain on my supersaws but everyone has their own style  ;D

I loved the intro hits.  I think though you could work on gain staging a bit, I felt that there were overpowering elements at certain points

Love how your first verse and second drop have a lot of seemingly piercing hi's yet they all fit perfectly.  Also, anything bitcrushed makes me happy.  Good job dude!
