Mixing/Mastering / Re: EQ TIPS
« on: January 08, 2016, 12:26:23 am »
feel free to add this into the OP if you want... just a useful tip for beginners on EQ sweeping to find those pesky frequencies.

Set a bell curve with a high Q and headphones on (so you can hear the frequencies while you sweep) then, when you find the annoying one just flip the gain from really high to really low.

WIPs / Re: WIP (obviously) ... bass house-ish stuff

I'd love to hear a switch-up in the bass sound but still using the same melody.  Maybe one less filtered and more angry

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Is mastering always neccesary?
« on: January 07, 2016, 11:51:03 pm »
I personally just mix mine and then throw a limiter on, so I guess I don't really "master" either. However, when I send my music to mastering, they never really make any changes to it, only difference is that they probably drive it into an analog console to bring up the volume instead of my supposedly shabby digital processing.

Yeah I remember you telling me on Skype or a stream that all you need is Pro-L and mastering is done.  Really changed my approach to it all and that's what i've been doing ever since

well done man!  you did a great job of keeping the energy up and everything sounds nice and pretty.

Only thing I dislike is the sound of the lead in the second half of the first drop, other than that I dig it all :)

This is well produced dude!  By dark do you mean mood or mix-wise?  To me it doesn't sound too dark at all in terms of mood, I think it's really good.

Honestly loved everything up to the buildup with the vocal chop (drop not my style of music but still sounds interesting).  The song definitely took a different turn than what I was expecting but if that was your intention then you did it well!

Ableton has a "Hip Hop Sub Bass" preset which I've found is heavy as hell. Great for getting a good pump in your song, if you set the decay right.

NGHTMRE uses that one too ! Just saturated a lot

I've seen this mentioned elsewhere on this forum, but an awesome free ePiano library is mda ePiano. I love it! :)
Yeah, Mat_Zo recommended it. I think i'll try it too :D

I just downloaded it.  It has no GUI so it is going to take some time to get the settings just right :)

I love Ableton but I wish it had the transpose function that Cubase has...  It must be so easy to just select all midi channels or audio and use the Transpose toolbar at the top

Reminds me a lot of a LOUDPVCK track, I'd use some of theirs as a reference.  Also check out Brillz's 808 guide on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/ItsBrillz/posts/596389447123285)

Really got into the atmosphere of the song!  Would love to hear some loud orchestral stomps with this either in the next section or towards the end of the build of the intro

This crazy sound by Madeon is a mystery to me.
Has anyone got an idea?

Yeah, this sound has always been a mystery, this is as far as I got lol

Nice yours is getting close!

There's this good project file of an Imperium remake I downloaded a while back... the guy didn't make that specific sound as great but I feel like a lot of the others are pretty damn close: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Nv1cWmohTw

1. Don't try to be original + Don't be afraid to steal good ideas from your favorite tracks (Good artists copy, while Great artists Steal)

This! I'd even go as far to say, try and recreate other people's tracks entirely. It will teach you a lot more than trying to come up with original ideas. Just make sure you don't carry on doing it like some people *coughzombycough*

I definitely agree with this, remaking full songs is great practice, and it's a method I have used periodically to learn very quickly! It's a good challenge to take up. Pushing yourself to figure out how to get something sounding a certain way makes you innovate and develop your own techniques. Even if you didn't nail the sound, you're still getting closer and learning more through experimentation  ;)

I love doing remakes, I think they are so critical to learning new techniques on your own like you said.  Because of this I usually have 2 production processes, one being remakes and one being producing my own music.  If i'm not feeling creative I'll just do a remake that day

dude... the Tennyson vibes are real with this.  It's clear your writing is on point.  Not sure about others but my only issue is that the low-end isn't as prominent, kinda hard to hear your kick.

I really like the vibe you created with the song :) If you want more Tennyson then throw in some crazy panning as well... the latest EP sounds like you're in a freaking movie theater.
