Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Method to finding key a song is in
« on: January 06, 2016, 08:25:16 am »
It's usually a simple two step process.

1. Identify whether the song is in a major (typically happy) or minor (typically sad) key.
2. Determine the tonal centre. This is the note that every other note depends on and revolves around.

These steps aren't ordered, so feel free to work the opposite way.

That's what I suggested, are you able to find the tonic center by ear though without using an instrument while the song is playing to find it?

I do both, instrument + using relative pitch and ear training to guide me. Unless you have perfect pitch, you need to learn relative pitch. That way you can identify intervals much quicker and determine the key of a song more effectively.

Do you have any tools or recommendations to learn relative pitch?

loved the rolling bass, nice mixdown for the most part and interesting sound design!  felt like there could have been more elements from the song, or variation through the drops/chorus'.

Good to know, thanks!  I actually had the whole song done but was missing a vocal hook or something more identifying so I just took the acapella from Street and put it over the top which is why there's a lack of other elements.

I always felt like I learned the most from Singularity and Flux Pavilion's masterclasses, they just click with me!

I know for a fact that WRLD only uses Sylenth and Soundfonts for his sounds.  Most Future Bass sounds are just simple waveforms (saw/square or sine for those nice plucks).  The key is all in the voicing of chords and writing the music, which for me has always been the most difficult :P

Hey guys,

I'm generally a pretty melodic producer, but for fun I've been messing around with this groove-bass influenced house style (similar to Drezo).

Here is one I made a little bit back, let me know what y'all think:

It's all about what you want.  Personally I love my m50x's and my mackie monitors.  If you can afford them and really want them then go for it.  You'll want to make sure the 8's are a good size for your room though.  For entry level monitors there's no perfect pair and plenty of producers use Rokits!

Building off @Mushroomizer, it could also be what you are using to listen to songs on as well.  When I made the jump from just standard gaming headphones to audio technica m50xs and a pair of studio monitors I really got to hear what music should sound like.

However, some artists are really good at using less than optimal setups... it's really about what you are used to listening to and if you know your equipment
