Very nice! My taste differs from Unkn0wn and Chris Ortek. I think the percussion balances nicely with the spaced out feel of the instrumental parts, and the whole song has a soft feel to it which enhances that aesthetic.

I mostly like how this one turned out. The kick was "sidechained" using Volume Shaper to give it an on-off pulsing feel in each measure that creates momentum.

But this was a project that started almost a year ago so it's got some rough edges (and it sounds better on my DT 990 Pro's than the Apple Earbuds I use at work). It's far from a clean mix, but it's time I moved on to new stuff. Any thoughts or improvements for this one that would help me with future songs?

This is so beautiful! I love the contrasting rhythms between the mallet instrument and the background percussion. And so much space and width to it; I just feel lost in the complexity! Incredible!

Ecstasy is my favorite song. Something about it's spacious feel relaxes me.

Your remix captured that feeling beautifully!

I love the contrast at the end between the up-close saw lead and the spacious pluck. Cool use of gating at 4:20!

Epicverb and Toneboosters Reverb v3.

To add to neoesoteric's advice, choose a steep lowpass filter, make sure to give the filter envelope attack between 25% and 50% the length of the decay to create that initial pop, and use a non-linear envelope curve such as quadratic to make the filter "snap" to it's hold value in the envelope.

Sound Design / Re: Dune 2 Synth

Having used it for a year now, DUNE 2 is the god of the massive supersaw. One instance of DUNE 2 = 8 independently crafted supersaws per note. And they just added an incredible new analog modeled lowpass filter that sounds awesome when overdriven.

Give Maximus a try. Between the per-band soft saturation and custom "compression" curves, you can get pretty close to a constantly maxed peak.

What makes me different from all the other people I know in the industry is I don't have any financial, or commercial ambitions, besides being able to do what I love every day, all day, and still afford food and shelter and the occasional bundle of plugins.

I'm not naïve - I know the majority of the artists are doing this for commercial and financial gain - but surely there must be a few producers with as much passion as you? :(

It would be neat if my music was played on stage or something, but I produce my music for myself. I make stuff that sounds cool, beautiful, or powerful to me; stuff that I can listen to and enjoy. That's also why I share it for free. I'm not looking to make a profit. The money I've "invested" in VST's and my DAW has been returned tenfold in enjoyment value. Nothing is more relaxing after a day of work than firing up FL, loading up Hive, and playing fun melodies on my MIDI keyboard. Occasionally, I'll save some combination of melody and synth. Sometimes I'll get excited at one of these projects, and add some stuff. Sometimes I just want to do some sound design.

I average about an hour a day doing this. If I tried to do anything more, or tried to force it, I would lose that enjoyment and that creative freedom. It's also why it takes me at least a year to create a complete song. It's truly just a casual hobby, but such an exciting one!

I have a lot of those kinds of projects saved. I don't try to force the song out of it, I just open the projects and fiddle with them. Sometimes, a new instrument will make sense. Sometimes I get on a roll and add quite a bit to the song. Sometimes the project just gets closed after listening to it. Eventually, a full song will bubble up from one of those projects. But it's a hobby for me, so I don't have any deadlines to make...

Try opening the project in the 32bit version of FL, and see if it crashes there. If it doesn't crash, try enabling bridged mode in the plugins advanced options to see if it forces FL64 to bridge it. This is assuming that the native loader is crashing. Otherwise, remove it from the project in FL32, save, then in FL64 load the 32bit version if it exists. Hopefully one of those will work.

I've tried all those things. I didn't even have to click the plugin to make it crash when loading 32 bit FL Studio.

I mean the crashing itself isn't the end of the world, that project is done anyway. I just don't want to continue using FilterCrusher if it will just crash my future projects.
Aww man, that sucks. Have you reinstalled the plugin? I had Fabfilter Saturn start crashing on load one day, and after trying several things, reinstalling the plugin fixed it. The DLL must have become corrupted or something... But if you've already tried that, definitely report it to Image Line so they can look into fixing it.

Hey, I actually think you did a really good job creating a dark atmosphere with this. I especially like the way you lead into the song. However, it sounds like your kick and snare are causing a "pumping" effect at some points (such as 0:21-0:31) and I'm not sure if it's intentional or not. It kinda sounds like you're pushing it way too hard through a limiter. It also sounds like there are some really low frequencies in your kick that are interfering with the bass. Gradually high-passing your kick might help to clean up your mix a bit.
Thank you! Yeah, the pumping is intentional. I was wanting the kick to be oppressive and heavy, like it's shaking the earth. So the kick is strong for the first beat of the measure, then the quick release on the sidechained compressor brings the bass back in for the second beat. I setup a sidechain from the clap to suppress the kick on the third beat which in turn suppresses the bass, then the bass again comes back for the fourth beat. The resulting sidechain "envelope" looks like this:

The song started out with the synth at 1:19, a kick, and the limiter. I liked the heavy pumping feel, so I re-worked it by re-creating the effect mostly with sidechaining.

the kick is great but may i suggest adding some sort of top end to it? maybe sample another kick to give it some higher frequency content, i think it would add more punch.
I do appreciate the suggestion. I had initially tested several types of layered kicks to add some top end punch, but I ended up intentionally cutting out the sharp attack to provide better contrast with the very sharp clap and give the song a slightly darker feel. However I do generally prefer a sharper top end to kicks, it just didn't seem appropriate here. I wanted it to feel more like an earthquake than a kick...
