you might have some subtle transient existing in the bass patch or bass group.

If you want gritty reverb, i suggest you distort your reverb and tame it with EQ accordingly and stereo width control.

Just by looks, which didnt' give me very much.

It's probably parallel compression, some form of distortion (tube like warmth description from product page), compressor, limiter.

You can generate your own plugin, so to speak, by understanding the signal chain that is used.

It's not until you want to venture off into your own sound completely, is when you'll need to build boutique plug ins.

google is friend

There's always going to some compensation in terms of loudness and dynamics, if you experiment with your own signal chain, you'll see what the trade off is.

Haha us music nerds have to stick together.

I'm mildly shocked; after spending most of my childhood on the Gulf Coast I can't believe someone in Lafayette is aware of any of those bands haha. I always felt like I was on an island musically down there until I moved to DC.

i've lived in several states and have experience quite a vast sense of musicianship and music.

But you're generally right, not every one is that adventuresome.

GWAR during the 2008 election was amazing

Russian Circles and Cynic aside from that. Crazy musicianship.

ok dude, you're officially fucking dank.

If you're really really stuck, put your favorite reference track into your DAW, open up an EQ, and change the frequency response until it sounds like you think it's supposed to sound normally. Slap that EQ on your master chain, then turn it off before bouncing your projects and see if it's giving you a more accurate result than without using a compensation EQ.

What's the goal of doing this?

DJ performance: Crizzly

My boy always does his best to throw a good party and keep it real.

Skream, Caspa, and Rusko are all great acts to see and provide a different flavor of DJing than americans.

RX Bandits and Streetlight Manifesto also put on really good shows, for non electronic oriented music.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Headphones or Speakers ?
« on: October 02, 2016, 10:11:39 pm »
I would say both. The stereo image is a bit easier to nail on headphones, but often you can get a better feel of the low end with good speakers. I don't think quality headphones or speakers are cheap. My recommendation would be:

Headphones: Beyerdynamic 990 250 ohm. (the ohm is important)
Speakers: Yamaha HS5 or HS7 depending on your room.

i'd say just gets 8's, it's worth it as long as you understand how it affects your room. You should be mostly working at a low volume any ways.

Also, the stereo field in headphones are a bit misleading. You get a better sense of how the headphone mix translates to speakers, only after you've spent some time and understand the relationship (or ratios for that matter) between the two.

(i am biased because i have exactly that set up with beyer's and 8inch yamaha. but dang ole man they're so worth it)

Sound Design / Re: EQing in white noise with supersaw chords, advice?
« on: October 01, 2016, 02:41:35 am »
I'm trying to layer it so it fit in with my supersaws in a smooth yet noticeable manner, like not a lot of hiss

See my previous suggestion.

You need to figure out how to best layer your sounds given the sonic content of each layer while understanding how the signal will be summed.

That's more complicated than it's worth.

If you're trying to process the sum of your signals by making individual sounds, then you might be better off just working with one sound than many sounds to make one sound.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Panning. One Left, One right, One Center?

Oh I'm sorry man I found humor in your message. Good humor.. That was a light hearted comment on my end. I hope you didn't read it as something else

In all seriousness though it's fun to pan things. I think experimentation trumps worrying about phasing at the start of a song. You can always sum to mono to be doubly sure if you are worried it might be an issue

you're good.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Compression on synths

i use a compressor as a dynamic reducer.

also glue groups of tracks.

i rarely use it to tonally shape a sound.

I also use a compressor to capitalize on transients.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Adding an EQ on the master = DISTORTION ?
« on: September 29, 2016, 08:38:47 pm »
i think mussar made a post or put a link to something related to this phenomena, but on a smaller scale, a few months ago.

If you EQ out a compressed sample (rendered sample) it might have the tendency to increase in volume.

you also have to check how the EQ works.

I use reason, which has an SSL emulation console, and when ever i make a drastic low cut, the the highs on my EQ actually increase in gain, with out having applied an increase in the high cut.

also, if it's a FILTER you're using, there's probably some resonance that's being boosted near the cut off frequency that you have not accounted for. and a simple fix, if you have a controllable resonance or bandwidth parameter, is to just adjust it to where it's not boosting, or adjust your master/mix to that particular boos in sonic content.

separate it in a new track and control it with the volume fader and EQ.

Also, not sure what you're trying to get out of it, given your description.

I feel a strong urge to pan things willy nilly now

Then it will show.
