Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: I dont understand modes

There should be a less convoluted way to speak to the masses instead of being so hoity toity about what you learn.

It's one of my biggest gripes about certain text books and the word choice.

We get it, your field is difficult or what ever and have rigor, but if you really want to make sure the basis understands what going on, it's better to make things as clear as possible.

other wise it's just a basis of creating a false sense of rigor rather than actually being substantial in the first place.

Gotta consider your audience and the ways to adapt the lesson to the student.

But w/e, i seek to make things easier because i see a whole bunch of snobby  rubbish in this particular subject of production, mix engineering, and music.

ain't gotta be fancy pants to know how to talk and walk, you just gotta know how to talk the talk and walk the walk. but still use that knowledge in your own movements.

Besides, tablet references make just as good of use as reference than actually memorizing a name or what ever.

Not attacking, just something to consider.

Jacques Pépin

Creation in the kitchen, for me, means constantly improving the familiar, tweaking and whittling all of my recipes over the years in a never ending process of making them better and reducing complication until I arrive at their essential qualities. The result is really tasty food that I (and you) can make as quickly and easily as possible. -JP

From his facebook

I find myself getting inspired outside of "getting inspired" books. Those things never really felt right for me.

I've always wanted to find out more about the human condition and myself. My main source of inspiration draws from just being alive, good and bad.

it seems that if you dive to deep into this particular topic, you kind of use it as a crutch instead of using it for what it's worth at the time.

suppose if you really need it, then go for it, but it's better to learn the self rather than to just be enamored by some one else's description of what you ought to do.

What are you doing to do what you need to do for yourself?

All these names for these things, which are good.

But why can't we just go more simpler and say that they are just different starting points on a given scale?

Unless those words used for a specific mode have some other harder thought behind it, i don't feel the need to blast open the music theory books here...just yet.

But it's cool though, i just took it with out having to memorize all that stuff.

You have your notes in the scale, start on a different note, but play all the notes in the scale that correspond to the scale key, and end where you begin.

That's another way to say things in a more uneducated manner.

Mixing/Mastering / RMS style compression with PEAK compressor
« on: April 04, 2016, 09:07:05 pm »
I had a thought today and was wondering if you could get a PEAK compressor to work like an RMS compressor?

My theory is this; you'd need to have more signal going into the compressor with a low ratio. probably also a soft knee rather than a hard one.

I also tend to think that a higher attack and release setting would be needed to capture the average aspect of this particular theory.

Let me know if I've done goofed or if it's something that could work.

WIPs / Re: Vera - Blizzard || EDM, my best track so far :D

There's absolutely 0 drums in the mix when it drops.

Bass over takes every thing, your lead does too.

That crash sample is WAY out of place.

drop your synths, and bass in volume and leave your drums alone. Listen to it, and see how it sounds.

Then turn up your drums a bit.

once you've done that, get another balance on your drums and the rest of your synths.

You should consider to cut the length down rather than repeat stuff that doesn't really go any where.

Also, considering the content of the song, i'd cut to the chase and get right to the drop rather than prolong the song.

Make use of eliminating drums earing in the break or throwing  a band pass on them and adding in more ambient sort of sounds during the breaks/build ups.

You need more pads in this tune bro.

More transition effects, and i don't mean crazy bro stuff but you can do this tastefully.

pretty bare bones track, but with the suggestions and arrangements i think you can make it pop.

Yea drop all your synths/effects and raise the kick and snare a little bit. (this works much easier if you use grouping)

i get a mario  deamau5 vibe.

it's not so bad, it's just kind of repetitive. I think if you make a chorus part or another version at 1.02 it should spruce things up a bit.

Even if you dont accurately transfer the feelings, you will still come up with something awesome, and your own.

Very important.

I played bass for a church band few years ago.

The director was the piano player, he had also toured with a band called The platters. Might have done some recordings, but not to sure.

Any ways, what he said was that, with music you'll come across these plateaus in learning and understanding and that each  pleateau represents the entire range of skills/techniques you have learned, applied, and practiced that are now in your tool box.

You've acquired all these skills and what you should be focusing on now are the things that might be a bottle neck in bettering your understanding.

My suggestion:
IE, it might be time to brush up more on your playing, music theory understanding, technical understanding of what ever effect/synth you use, it also might mean to upgrade headphones/speakers/mixing room.

Also consider this. You are at a point where you could make this your career and you might want to figure out where you want to go with it.

You might think that shouldn't be apart of the process, but it's a real deterrent to doing things if you've felt like you've mastered the process and understanding. I got that way when ever i reached a certain point in world of warcraft with leveling, getting geared, and mastering a new healing class. It just becomes a giant hamster wheel at that point.

But you've already made the investment, so only you are stopping yourself from making music.

If we're being honest, it sounds like you should just be making music for yourself and when you want to make music should also be for yourself.

Unless this is your job, then there's no reason why you shouldn't be chill about it.

You almost sound a little like me, and what i realized was i am completely comfortable just taking this thing in stride and really enjoying the entire process of making music.

This comes with a reevaluation of WHY i do the music, more so than when ever i started.

Consider the mental aspects of doing things, and you might find new inspiration.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: High Cutting Vocals
« on: April 02, 2016, 06:25:08 pm »
^ Do you mean cutting vs shelving filters? Anything that an EQ does is called filtering.

For a remix I made recently, I cut a bit too much of the highs for a stupid "buildup" effect, and the vocals ended up sounding like the singer has a cold. So don't cut too much!

Yea i mean shelving and cutting.

I had a total of 8 hours of sleep the past few days when ever i wrote that...

Just used the words that came out lol

Studio One can bounce/freeze a clip directly to a new track, it makes this sort of thing really fast. Is this not a common feature in DAWs? I miss it in FL studio for sure.

It is, but it's very daw specific.

like if you're talking about right clicking freeze>bounce sort of thing.

You can also send the track to an effect channel (bus or a channel of the mixer;parallel process, bussing, groups) and set that effect channel to record to another channel and capture it that way. IDK if you can record the effect straight up, but that seems more like freezing then bouncing/render.

With any low or hi cut, you want to make sure you're either cutting or tossing a filter.

A filter is just cutting every thing off at a certain point, where a cut leaves some room for the lowest frequency range to breath. A combination of both could be used, or just one or the other.

Typically you have to know the range of the singer and how it relates to the key of the song.

But it's the range you're trying to fit the vocals in, that's what determines your filter/cut of high and low.

I don't use much vocals, but i apply this concept to any of my vocal esque synthesizers. and really eqing in general

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Art Inspires art

Every time i try to replicate some one else, i end up not getting what i want.

I started listening to other people in a different way, and definitely try to find inspiration, but not in the way of emulation.

it's more of "what were they thinking when they made that sound?" not so much a personal question, but a creative and technical side.

more analysis then internalized and use for next time in some large or big way.

435
yea, you can't be so focused on the job and neglect the things around you.

Your mind needs time to process the information in order to evaluate what to have happen next.

I've gotten to a point where I can control my sessions pretty well. I don't really force myself to write any thing down, and i am pretty confident as to what i am putting down. Especially when it comes to the sound design process.

But, i try to make sure i block off some of the more technical things that i can do for a while and the more creative side of things that really drain my mental energy. I try not to combine the two, but some times you have to use both in order to get the result.

Don't be so attached, just be there and understand what your body is saying to you. Don't forget to hydrate and eat!
