If you're concerned about your computer usage then go do something that's not so heavily involved on the computer. or minimize your computer time to only music.

I've played enough MMO's to know they're not worth my time any more, and among other business aspects -_-

The internet is easily gratifying experience....the outside world is tough...

also, don't get a girlfriend/boyfriend just because lol. that's literally the same thing as getting a pet because you're bored.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Reverb on Percussion
« on: August 02, 2016, 04:09:20 pm »
applying reverb as a send effect instead of an insert effect allows you more control over that reverb, by allowing you to eq/compress/sidechain the reverb however you like

in conjunction with applying a reverb as a send (auxiliary or bussing) you can send other instruments or channels to this same reverb unit bus, and obtain a cohesive sound.

apply that to any other effect, and you get some glue.

all you really need for a god like master is black sabbath

so youre saying you have 3 bass synths playing at a time though? why is this.

I know this wasn't the original question but I understood your answer but of course that brought this question up

thanks

Sub bass and audible bass reside as one in one particular bass patch.

If you separate the sub bass from the audible bass layer, you will have more control over your mix entirely.

the other option is to have a sub bass layer in the patch that your audible bass is (but some times combining things at the wrong level ends up with a less than desired result).

The bass can be chopped up into how ever many layers you want. this also applies to lead synths, drums, and what ever else you might want to use or create at a micro or macro level.

I don't usually separate things based on frequency range, but i understand where the meat of my frequency content ought to be with the different sections and components of my mix (drums, bass, leads, sound effects).

that being said, if you do end up separating your individual components into different frequency ranges, you can process each layer a little different that will ultimately give you a different characteristic of texture and tone on a more detailed level than if you were to just slap on a distortion unit on your bass.

But you gotta decided what you want to do and how you want your stuff to sound like...Consider both tools and use them accordingly.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Questions about sidechain.
« on: July 30, 2016, 02:18:55 am »
side chaining takes a signal source and sends that source signal to a compressor and uses that source signal to trigger the compressor (source runs in parallel to a compressor where the parallel signal activates the compressor).

with side chaining, you're causing the compressor to duck out when the source signal is being activated.

the more aggressive settings causes the compressor to behave more aggressively (ie you hear more of the effect) if you have higher ratios and threshold settings.

and you have more subtle effect with lower threshold and ratio settings.

attack and release define when the compressor is activated and how long it ends given the respective settings.

The source's parallel signal, attack, and release settings determine how long and when the compressor activates. threshold and ratio determine how aggressive the effect is.

I would suggest you group kick and snare and send ALL of your instruments to one side chain compressor group. then send a parallel signal of your kick and snare group.

there's a reason for this as if you were to do it individually it eats up processing and creates lag the more time you do it....so uses groups.

you can also do this to vocals as the source signal as well to get the vocals to sit on top of the music.

sounds decent on consumer speakers.

Bus out your snare and reverb unit. it sounds like you got a mix of the snare and reverb by applying the reverb unit onto the snare channel and adjusted the dry/wet.

you'll have better time if you send your snare to a separate effect channel (or auxiliary or send/return) and get the reverb and snare layer separately.

sounds decent though.

decent drum sound.

bass synth(in the drop) has no feeling to it, i suggest you look into how you can make your envelops work for you as well as velocity changes and note length.

it sounds like you've played out that bass line as well.

the middle part is really good.

That bass synth is really the only thing that needs work the most, every thing else seems to be well done.

I don't know if abrasive sounds would work in this particular concept.

Bring up your cymbals.

add a touch more transient to your kick.

Synths are dreamy and creamy.

Snare sound a little cheesy. I think if you took out the clap and layered in a side stick instead, it'd provide better sound for the snare.

It sounds pretty good cranked up on consumer speakers, but at low volume the picture of your mix just doesn't project.

If this isn't mastered, i'd like to see how it sounds.

I love how you kept the mix warm overall, i think you're eqing decisions were spot on for the vibes.

Sound Design / Re: Pitching Big Kicks Effectively
« on: July 25, 2016, 03:38:39 am »
if you're separating out one sound into three different parts, and then pitching the one source, you're going to effect the separate signals that are layered out.

Try duplicating the same kick sample into how many frequency ranges you want, and individually pitch them.

Yep, some days i don't wanna bother.

But i don't let that bother me so much.

The last thing i need is to force myself to be creative.

One problem i notice myself having is that, i work so hard to finish a track it's some what tough for me to just jump back into it and make another one immediately after finishing one tune.

Some times i can do tracks back to back, but that's random enough for me to not count on it.

I just pay attention to what i am feeling at the moment.

Also other times, i go so long with out making a track and i have generated enough ideas for one in my head, that i have to go and sit down and start capturing it. Regardless of it being "what i want in my head".

Just be aware of what your self is telling you, and roll with it.(from a serious hobbyist)

marrow thats interesting re: the decay and attack. is that to simulate more 'humanized' sustain and timings?

also. ive been thinking of getting a little field recorder so i can record foley and claps and stuff like that myself, like VCTRLXNDR said. anyone got any recommendations for that?

Reason has this cool feature where you can adjust the decay and pitch based on how hard you make the velocity.

If you really spend time and analyze one sound, you can get a lot out of it.

sounds good on consumer speakers.

Cool vibes man. appreciate that old school sound.

Drums could use a bit more processing to be more present, but overall solid

nailed the trance sound.

bar out your intro to something that's like 16 bars long, go to silence at the end of the 16th bar and then bring on the trap beat.

you have enough music and instrumentation to use for the main drop, you just gotta arrange it a bit differently. the arrangement can borrow a similar chord progression or use the same one.

add in sounds from the intro drop out sounds from the intro, maybe make some new ones.

But use with what you have and just throw in a phat beat and some bass.
