I also use FL Studio. A tip I have for people struggling with drum patterning (which is not something I struggle with as I'm a drummer), is to lay down drum patterns in the playlist like this:

instead of laying drum patterns down in the piano roll like this:

and this:

Laying your drums down in the playlist, like I did in the first example, really pushes you to be creative. Force yourself not to copy and paste a loop of drums, but rather lay down the drums in the playlist separately for every part of the song. This allows you to fit every little drum hit exactly how you want it, without wasting a bunch of patterns.

The first example drum pattern sounds like this. The pattern doesn't get stale because it changes throughout the loop. That being said, it still has a consistent groove to it. Adding little percussion blips and bloops here and there really spices up this pattern.

The second drum loop sounds like this. Evidently, the first pattern is way better than this one. This pattern gets boring after a while, due to the lack of variation. I didn't force myself to be creative with this one, I didn't add any little sounds that could spice up the loop, and I didn't even bother to add fills, or any extra percussion for that matter.

Force yourself to be creative with your drum loops. It can really make or break a song.

Hope this helps!

Diggin it. Definetly thinks it's needs some vocals and mess with some hi hat  rhythm

Working on the hi hat flow right now. hmm yes female vox! genius

I think using female vocal chops for a simple melody, and then getting male rap over that as the focal point of the song would be sweet.

EDIT: Worked on the song a bit. New link.

There's some mids missing I think, and the kick is too soft and doesnt have enough lows, try a harder and more punchy  kick

Agreed, I think I need more lows on the kick. I'll also see what I can do about the mids.

Sounds pretty cool so far! :D I think your hi-hats should be a tinier bit louder? Also the kick feels like it should be harder.

Thanks! I was thinking the hats were a bit quiet as well, but I wasn't sure. I also agree that the kick should be harder.

Really digging this track right now! Might I suggest possibly maybe adding a short 1-2 bar break and replace it with some percussions? I feel like it could give some bounce to it

Great idea! I was thinking I should add some sort of tom fills, but I think I might use some lighter percussion instead of toms.

Thanks for your feedback guys!

Awesome to get mentioned on here already!  ;D

I bet about 95% of my synth sounds are probably made in Sylenth. I like to keep my sounds simple and clean.

I'd say future bass is definitely more about songwriting than it is about sound design. Like a few people here already mentioned, adding 2nds, 4ths and 7ths to your chords will help give them a bit more depth and emotion (not just for future bass obviously). I tend to use a lot of dissonant harmonies in my chords as well, I think a lot of people aren't used to using those types of harmonies in their chords. My music teacher in high school once asked me to describe a dissonant harmony and I answered "they always sound ugly" and he said "not if you use them in the right way", and that actually completely changed the way I wrote my chords.

Also something I absolutely looooove is using nice clean sounding, slightly detuned saw (most of the time using 2 voices) synth leads for my main melodies or solos. I use an LFO to add vibrato and then I automate the gain to make it sound funkier, I also use a lot of pitch bending and/or portamento as well to give it a bit more depth. To make it sound smoother I always use a nice lowpassed ping pong delay. Highpassing out anything below 120 Hz on the leads always seems to help with that as well.

One little trick I always use is slightly bit crushing the leads to give them a little 'crunch'. If I'm using a bit crusher though, I always lowpass anything above 20K, you might not hear those super high frequencies but your dog might. :( Even if you're not hearing it it might still clean up your mix and bit crushers always add nasty unwanted frequencies.

Are there any particular bit crushing plugins you would recommend? Been using bit crushing a lot more lately and I can't seem to find a decent plugin. :/

On stream I've seen him use the standard ableton redux effect, not sure if he's changed it up recently though!

yeah really most bitcrushers do the same thing so theres no point in not just going with redux unless you want some port and starboard attachment bullshit

If you use FL, there is a preset in waveshaper called "Bitmunching". I find it to be a very good bitcrush, I use it a lot.

It sounds like the lead and the supersaw are clashing.

Other than that, great track! I really love the atmosphere you created, very beautiful!

That 808 is absolutely HUGE! Love it.

I would add more percussion here and there to spice it up. Also, I would add an attack to the sound that comes in at 0:21, as it's a bit abrupt at that moment.

Good job man! The track was really cool!

39
I don't really have much to say here. But I think it's worthy of continuing! Add more sounds to it as it progresses. Good stuff!

Thanks man! Appreciate the reply!

I totally would if we had the same DAW. :(

That WIP is really cool though! Hope you find someone who wants to collab!

This is obviously a very serious oversight and should be remedied immediately.

I need to Guetta moving

I absolutely love this concept. Drop hits really hard, nice and punchy and mean sound. One thing I would work on is the pad in the intro. It sounds pretty static and uninteresting at the moment, maybe some filter movements or layered processed foley and misc fx would spice it up. Other than that, this sounds great!

Agreed. The pad is very static. I would also turn the vocal chops down just a bit at the beginning. Other than that, this is a really cool concept!

WIPs / FVTVRE BVSS | updated it again

I started this this morning.

I thought I'd give the feedback thread a whirl, and see what some other producers on this forum thought of my future bass WIP!

So here's the WIP!

44
I play the drums. It definitely helps when creating complex drum patterns. I haven't released any songs with complex drum patterns, but I have made some pretty dank drum loops.

45
honestly LTC are good producers and they make fun music, but it all just boils down to "flume ripoff" imo

I see where you are coming from, but there is still a noticeable difference in style. Flume's stuff is a lot more experimental. I also think that it's good to have multiple artists with similar styles, because fans of that certain type of music have access to a larger selection of similar songs.
