Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Drum Pattern Techniques
« on: January 12, 2016, 03:03:05 pm »
I've been so use to using piano rolls that I don't really need to do this to be "creative" sure it looks cool to the non trained eye but it just wastes time honestly.

I respect that. It's a personal preference thing, but I figured that for people who are struggling with making creative drum loops, that this would help at least a bit. When I was using the piano roll for drums, I found myself making a pretty short pattern, and then looping it for whatever parts of the song needed drums. If you've been using the piano roll for making drum loops, and you don't struggle with creativity, then keep using the piano roll.

Get better. Overall just better. I want to learn more music theory. Get better at composition. Learn more about mixing techniques. Get better at sound design. Just generally get better.

Emotions. Often sad/somber ones. Rarely do I make a happy track.

I made these basses for a remix I did of YeahRight! - Remind Me (feat. Lonemoon):

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mono kick?

Personally, I like to keep the kick mono, although I have seen people put reverb on their kick, and have it work. ex.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Drum Pattern Techniques
« on: January 12, 2016, 06:06:16 am »
So I already posted this in the Workflow Thread, but I believe this is valuable information regarding creating drum patterns, and could be a post of its own. So here it is:

A tip I have for people struggling with drum patterning (which is not something I struggle with as I'm a drummer), is to lay down drum patterns in the playlist like this:

instead of laying drum patterns down in the piano roll like this:

and this:

Laying your drums down in the playlist, like I did in the first example, really pushes you to be creative. Force yourself not to copy and paste a loop of drums, but rather lay down the drums in the playlist separately for every part of the song. This allows you to fit every little drum hit exactly how you want it, without wasting a bunch of patterns.

The first example drum pattern sounds like this. The pattern doesn't get stale because it changes throughout the loop. That being said, it still has a consistent groove to it. Adding little percussion blips and bloops here and there really spices up this pattern.

The second drum loop sounds like this. Evidently, the first pattern is way better than this one. This pattern gets boring after a while, due to the lack of variation. I didn't force myself to be creative with this one, I didn't add any little sounds that could spice up the loop, and I didn't even bother to add fills, or any extra percussion for that matter.

Force yourself to be creative with your drum loops. It can really make or break a song.

Hope this helps!

What are some of the techniques you use when making drum patterns?

WIPs / Re: FVTVRE BVSS | worked on it a bit more, updated the link

I like how this is sounding.  The snare is really sweet, a very nice donk.  I think it would sound really sick to reinforce the drops with some beefy supersaw/futuresaw chords, and then throw in some movement changes/tremolo variations!
Keep it up.

Haven't put up the updated version, but it has a supersaw in the second drop! I agree, I need to add more variations, I'm working on it atm!

Thanks for the feedback!

Heyo,

I didn't comment the first time but, i'll do it now.

So to be started, I liked the main synth but it kinda feel like it's overused in the song. It's there from the beginning to the end. I think you should try making 2-3 differents to add variation. (Like one with detune and super wet) The bass is a simple sub, maybe try adding texture to it, i don't really know.

the kick and the snare matched perfectly. Percussions were very cool.

Melodies were a bit too simple, try making them move a bit, to give those some sweet feels.

Although, it's good so far ;)

I haven't put up the most recent version yet, but I've changed the lead synth, and it sounds much better. I've also added a supersaw in the second drop which adds more intensity to that drop. Another thing I've done is remove the piano, as I feel it doesn't fit the song very well. Lastly, I've improved the mix a bit. I think I will take your advice and add some variation to the Flumey synth, probably with automation.

Thanks for the feedback!

I think I get the general idea? sort of? but there has to be a better word for that than "emotional". "What kind of emotion you aiming for?" "Oh, you know, emotional."
This is just one of those things that irritates me for dumb reasons because I'm dumb.

Wow, you have a hilarious way of making fun of people... even calling them dumb by calling yourself dumb. Maybe suggest a word, though... tempestuous, sentimental, somber, brooding, contemplative? You'd have to be pretty mean-spirited to make the comments you did...

Especially since in EDM, you can't rely on lyrics to show a wide emotional range.

... considering the EDM track with lyrics that was posted to address your original red-herring reply. You'd have to be pretty uncaring not to get a clue from something this obvious : https://soundcloud.com/poisonstings/poisonstings-out #emotional

To answer poisonstings question: I usually create jovial, introspective melodies and thematic ideas. If a song is mostly composed (but missing a melody), I'll come up with something to fit the mood of the song.

You nailed it on the head with those words! Especially sentimental, somber, and contemplative.

The vocal harmony is sooooooo good!

Depends on what the song needs.

On a side note, what emotion is "emotional"?

Not sure how to explain emotional, but I'll try. It's like when a melody isn't sad, but it still draws some sort of emotion that isn't light and happy (this is really hard to explain sorry). It's not quite sad, but not even close to happy. Kind of dark. You know what, here's a song:

It's not quite sad, but close. I'm really struggling with this. Hopefully I helped a bit.

What emotions do your melodies evoke? Mine are usually sad/emotional.

Thanks man! I had the same mindset. I watched The Making of: Still Don't Understand a while back, he is one of my favourite producers, and that is one of my favourite songs. One thing I really like about his music is his work with percussion, the guy is great at it. So recently it hit me, "How does he get such a consistent but variating groove in his drums?" So I watched the video again, and I saw his drums laid out in the playlist. So I gave it a go, and it really helped, as you can tell by the examples. :)

Ooh I actually meant to watch that video but never got around to it. Now is the perfect time since all I'm doing is trolling these forums anyway. :)

Definitely would watch the video, so many little things that are helpful. The guy is a production god to me, so I've watched that video a couple times by now. :P

I always thought people who did this in FL were wasting their time, but you actually have a really really good point. I think I'll give this a go. :)
