Opinions?
(the mix is a bit shit, stuffs distorting(

Interesting idea man, I like this! I'm really digging your piano breakdown at the end, sounds pretty original and has a very cool dark vibe going on!

One suggestion for your breakdown at 2:15, like may want to consider adding more sounds to fill up the space around the synth.  I think that throwing some lower frequency sounds in as a layer on top of that main synth may help or even switching those single notes to chords which may add some more complexity as well.

Keep it up man and good luck :)

So crazy since ive been analyzing this project for some time too. I actually just had it open and then saw this post. Ive come to find out that you shouldnt let the rules of producing stop your creativity. But in this case yeah, they get the end result mix in a different way.

At times its hard to make sense of all the gain staging they did with a utility on every channel. but yet the channel volume is above 0db.
So maybe we are just seeing the in and outs of a work flow that doesnt make that much sense to us.

That is pretty crazy man!  That project has been an absolutely goldmine for me for learning purposes, I'm very grateful to both of them!

It's really interesting to see that others have noticed this too and also questioned their own process :)

Interesting.

Now Im not going to pretend to be an expert on the mastering process, but I think I can clear up the -6db stuff. If you master your own work, you can put the premaster dbs at whatever you like. However, if you are sending it off to be mastered professionally, the -6dbs is necessary to give the engineer all the headroom he may need for your specific project. Everyone uses different processes to get similar results. At least that's my take on it.

That makes sense, thanks for clarifying!

I entered Jauz and Pegboard Nerd's remix contest for "Get on Up" a few months ago and they were kind enough to include the full Ableton project complete with effects chains and premastering chains.  After analyzing the mastering process they used to achieve commercial loudness and sound, I'm somewhat confused.

This project appeared to have only about -2db of headroom with the premaster chain turned off, which confused me as I've read and heard about -6db to be the area to shoot for prior to mastering.  The premaster chain was quite minimal with only an EQ, glue compressor, utility for gain reduction, sausage fattener and a limiter turned up to around 14 db, that's it.

I'm intrigued as this is completely different than my own process and seems much more fluid/efficient while also getting much louder.  Would love to find out more about this method if any of you are familiar!

You could add another bass thats very similar but maybe its a bit wider. Listen to I Just Cant (Chris Lorenzo remix) and check out how every beat or so the bass gets really wide.

Yup, definitely notice the bass spreading out to the sides on certain hits, very cool effect.

Ahh I know what you mean both of you,yes I am trying to figure out how to arrange the drums so it sounds less repetitive and nicer.

I am a huge fan of Moksi and admire their stuff and how groovy their songs are ;)

This guide below may be very helpful for you to check out, especially the section on deep/future house about midway down.

This one is great for some additional tricks/tips after you've gone through the big guide to keep your drums sounding even more unique/interesting

http://edmprod.com/5-drum-tricks/

Jauz and Pegboard Nerds had a remix contest for "Get On Up" a while back where they included all stems (such nice guys!).  The drum/percussion loop was made up of about 8 different layers.

After a whole year learning and trying music production, I have finally finished an entire track. I took LCA by GTA and used its arrangement almost exactly. I basically attempted to recreate it adding my own twists to the song. Please let me know what you think and any tips on the mix.

This is pretty dope, great job!  The mix sounds very clean and crisp on my end.

I think that your song may have more impact and presence if you include more drums/hats like in LCA, though this is pretty stylistic to my taste and a personal preference really.    Also a subjective personal preference, but I think that vocal sample would sound cool with even more effects and chops on it throughout to keep the variety going.  I thought it had a lot of potential on the buildups if you were to chop certain parts of it and have it play rhythmically in time with the build up drums.  Also could sound cool if you drop the octave to make it deeper in parts just to switch it up.

Keep it up man!

great track man, wouldnt mind listening to it next to the bass/garage house songs I like. I feel like the drop needs a little extra movement in the main bass. You could try pitching/modulating the synth you used.

thanks so much, thrilled to hear that!

Thanks for your feedback, would love to start incorporating that.  For bass modulation, what do you like to modulate other than pitch?

Hello all! I've been lurking for awhile now and I decided I would post my first finished track here to find out what you all think. enjoy :)

Extremely impressive for your first finished track, already sounds like you have quite a handle on what you are doing!  The arrangement and sounds are awesome.   It sounds very unique with a distinct style, yet would fit right in with the other tracks in a typical festival set.

Overall the mix sounds very clean and balanced.  There were only two areas that I had thoughts on.  First, would have liked to hear your kick come through a bit more through the mix, as it sounds like some of the other layers may be covering it up once you have a lot of them in.  If you listen to the kick in relation to the mix during the first 15 seconds and compare with the next 15 seconds after that (or during the drop), you may notice what I mean.  I would check your side-chaining/LFO carve-out settings out to make sure that your kick is coming through consistently throughout the entire song regardless of how many layers are playing.  Also, you may want to check your EQ settings to see if there is any low end you can free up from your other layers to make more room for the kick.  If you don't have your kick already playing in mono, switching it to mono may also help.

Again just to emphasize, this is incredibly impressive for your first finished track, keep it up man!

You know you have a vocal in the drop and I think its too dry maybe you should add a delay and a bit of reverb on the vocal.
Listen to Malaa-Notorious, maybe there is more clear

Got it now man, thanks!

Had the pleasure of seeing Malaa last month, so awesome!!

I have to say the drums are completely making the song for me, just add there some more synths or another cool sounds to make it full and less repetitive and you won my heart.

So glad that you dig the drums man!  Your insight is really interesting, that was an area I struggled with quite a bit while working through this project.  I would have liked to add more higher frequency synths and sounds to fill up the drop, but noticed that it was losing that basshouse sound whenever I took attention away from the sub bass and bass synth and wasn't really working for me.  Do you have any tips on this end as far as filling out the spectrum without shifting the overall feel/theme of the track?

Would absolutely love to hear any tips that you have to reduce repetition as well, which is another area that I struggle with on the regular.

Thanks so much!

Hey, thanks for the  feedaback that you did on my song, now its my turn :). I find the track with a lot of potential and positive things inside it, I am very fan of the build up, its very clubby and I like it, also your percussion is very good and sounds professional. I think that the fxs before the drop are too much, maybe an EQ cutting the lows so when the drop starts its more like a boom(idk if you understood or its my bad English  :-\). Maybe what i miss from the drop is another sound in the lead so it gives a bit of variety and makes a  contrast with the short melody from the drop. I would put a little reverb and delay on the "drop" like a downlifter.

Overall its a great track with great sounds in it and very well done ,I hope this helped and sorry for my bad english  ;D

Thank you for all that feedback and kind words man!  Your English is not bad at all btw, I understand all of what you say loud and clear :)

Would love to hear more about your tip on adding a little reverb and delay onto the drop like a downlifter, not sure I'm fully understanding and want to make sure I know what you mean on this one.  Is there a song that you could post as reference that demonstrates this concept?

Thanks again!
