Mixing/Mastering / Using a reference track
« on: April 02, 2016, 10:11:16 pm »
Guys I have a problem. So I have a track done and getting my mix to sound as good as I can get it to be. and I'm using reference tracks to know how my track really should sound.

So when gain staging at first I do it so that the loudest part of my song is at -6db more or less. So I get a reference track and place it so that its volume is also at -6 db so I can compare it at the same volumes.

The thing is when I start making adjustments to my track so it matches my reference track I always find myself in a position that when it sounds the same as my reference track the overall volume of my mix is at -6 db, but I have some peaks that reach almost -3 db!

Obviously the reference track is mastered and has a limiter and nothing crosses -6 dbs, but I can't get my mix to sound the same without getting those peaks out of the way. I tried placing a limiter, but it just kills the mix.... I don't know what to do :(

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Disclosure's F for you vocals

I think they do something with short delays, hard panned. I don't think you need dubbing or reverb to get the effect.

How about keeping 1 recording in the middle (after all it needs to be mono compatible) and a second version panned hard left, a third one panned hard right and one of the panned version phase inverted?

It gives a wide stereo effect and when listening in mono, the panned version cancel each other because of the phase invertion.

Add delay to taste but realize it can screw your mono compatibility.

That's a nice interesting idea, I'll try it out.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Disclosure's F for you vocals
« on: March 29, 2016, 04:16:12 am »
Yesterday I was hearing F for you by Disclosure and I loved the vocals they have. The effect is really appealing to me. The thing is I thought they kind of dubbed the vocal and added some king of reverb in the studio, but when I saw the live performance it was just one guy singing into the microphone. This made me realize they must be singing into some kind of harmonizer with a reverb and a stereo enhancer... maybe. The thing is, I don't know how they achieve that vocal effect... any ideas??

The vocal I'm talking about appears at 0:10

If you have money buy a pair of monitors and an audio interface.

Mixing/Mastering / Compressing Synths
« on: January 20, 2016, 11:41:13 pm »
What's the deal with synth compression??
Normally synths come out pretty even in their dynamics. When you record a vocal you can really tell you need compression in that raw track (normally), but that's not the case with a synth.

Why does everyone seems to love throwing compressors on synths??

Daft Punks creative process have always inspired me.

Their creative process has always been a mystery to me.

I support the forum's app idea. If you have budget it would be cool to develop it.

coding an app from scratch takes a lot more time than you'd think...

Dude, we're just giving ideas. The app is a good one. If these ideas are difficult to execute, it's not our business. Let them worry about that. We're just brainstorming.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: What/Who inspired you to start?
« on: January 08, 2016, 07:23:13 am »
No that I think about it, my brother. My brother used to play around with 'coolmixpro' (i cant remember exactly what it was called) in the late 90s and I would sit and watch. I got my own computer when I was 11 and started making general midi versions of Daft Punk tracks and stuff, eventually trying to do my own compositions. It was Daft Punk ultimately who inspired me to start making electronic music though
It is funny how many producers say they started making music because of Daft Punk. This is my case also, but I'm starting to feel that's becoming a little bit of a cliché. Lol, the same way a lot of  guitarists say Jimi Hendrix is a huge inspiration.

That defeats the whole purpose of it being a forum

That would be true if you turn the forum into a social network such as facebook, but just implementing one the tools they already have doesn't kill the forum concept. It actually makes communication way easier.  :D

When you get into a conversation with someone in a thread it's really difficult to follow it when you're quoting, the conversation gets all over the place and other guys can't really dig into it and bring something to the table. A replying capability very much to the style of facebook and 9gag would really help get the conversation going.

Sometimes you just really agree or relate to a post or reply someone made, but you just don't have anything to say to quote it and add something to it. A like button would be cool to have.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: How should you layer supersaws?
« on: January 08, 2016, 06:30:58 am »
Normally I grab about 5 saws (give or take, depends how fat I want it) and play around with them. Maybe I detune one that has 8 voices, then I leave 1 with only one voice. Maybe I take one multivoiced saw and get it one octave higher. Add a little bit of white noise, add reverb if necessary. It all depends on how do you want to use it and how it fits in the track.

After that I normally sculpt with EQ each layer to clean it up.

Mixing/Mastering / Sidechaining everything
« on: January 08, 2016, 06:22:56 am »
I want to know what you think about sidechaining guys. Electronic music is the only genre of music I've seen people sidechain as much as they do. Many people sidechain every instrument that's no the kick during the "drop" just to give it this EDM feel, not even thinking if that's the best decision for their mix.

Do you think this is because of poor engineering skills, or is it that the heavy sidechain is becoming more of a musical decision of the genre?

Ableton is the way to go, you won't regret it when you get the swing of it.

I use FL, and I'm really thinking changing to ableton. FL is great, but I find myself wasting to much energy linking everything together and naming everything 2 or 3 times. Instead of actually making music.

Sometimes If I want to work fast I put a demo of a song together in a short period of time (say 2 or 3 hours) and I have to spend another hour just getting everything linked and named so it can be possible for me to do a decent mixdown of the track... It really is annoying sometimes. >:(
