Sound Design / Re: making squarepusher/tipper leads?

Granular synths maybe?

A combo of granular synths, samplers, and of course analog/modular synth madness.

The Mangle is my personal favorite granular synth, but there's plenty out there.

Kick sounds like it has somekind of distortion on it. Also it's clipping at 0:50.

But the ideas in general are cool.

Thank you, I appreciate that! The kick is clipping a bit (i honestly hadn't noticed til now, i've been in writing mode not paying attention to the levels at all), and the clipping at 0:50 is fixed for sure but when I bounced the track the plugin i used was turned off. /shrug

« on: January 08, 2016, 11:53:29 pm »

As per the request of a close friend to "make a super obnoxious remix of a somber song," I've decided to do a bootleg remix of this classic.

WELP, HOPEFULLY I FINISH TONIGHT I'LL POST UPDATES AS I GO

Update 1: the drop

Update 2: Electric boogaloo
Fixed some things. added some more. thumbs up.

Update 3: Another one
Oh boy.

Update 4: The Final Frontier
FINISHED. UNMIXED. UNMASTERED.

note for anyone in the future: the progress tracks are only being left up for 7 days. after that i'm taking them down to free up space on soundcloud.

Bump. I love this. I've never heard of it til just now, but this is pretty sweet.

The beat in Real Friends is smooth, and the vocals are on point of course. The outro is fantastic.

What snippet is given of No More Parties in LA is dope as shit.

Where my hip hop heads at? What do you guys think?

wow I am dumb, thanks for that! The suggestion then, is why not make this on by default? (unless of course this is just some weird browser specific bug that only applies to a handful of people)

Got a lot of requests about this, had no idea how to fix it until now. Thanks @aaron for the fix, i've applied it as default for everyone!

I gotchu ;)

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Question about clearing samples
« on: January 08, 2016, 06:45:48 am »
I was watching a Dilla Documentary with Madlib hunting through Dilla's record collection, and he stopped himself from mentioning what a couple records got used for on Donuts, because he was pretty sure they weren't properly cleared. On Donuts. Huuuuge record. Uncleared samples. His Moog in the Smithsonian.
I think we can all agree that it's a catch-me-if-you-can game, as long as you are turning something, especially something dusty and forgotten, into something totally else entirely.
Snatching whole vocal lines from someone without payment or credit, probably not so good, in terms of liability. Dick move.

Could you link/pm that documentary? Sounds awesome.

maybe try reworking the melody it doesn't flow too well, drop kind of needs a transition/buildup comes in unexpected, drums are on point, groove flows well.

Thanks man, I appreciate that. I usually add risers/impacts and all that fancy stuff near the end of the track, but if I can think of ways to write it in before then I'll do that for sure. The melody is a little awkward too, I'll rework it for a bit.

Near the end, try to decide on a key signature. The kick drum in the end part is not in the same key, so it sounds out of place. Are you going for a trap main part?

Like I said earlier, that section is not serious. I just threw it in as placeholder to maybe give other people an idea on where to go after the intro section. I'll keep that in mind in the future though, thanks! :)

I played with the vocals and kept the rhodes concept, but took it in a bit of a different direction. I think the hip hop vibe probably works better with the bass sound you had so don't feel like you need to go with this, but here's my spin on it. Maybe it'll give you some new ideas!

I really like that. Like a lot. I'm definitely going to work in something like that, I think the mood of that will contrast well with the intro if I can get them to flow well. Thanks a bunch man, this is good stuff!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Are M-Audio BX5 D2 any good?
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:26:34 pm »
I have the BX5s and I love them to death. If you really want to I would recommend getting a sub with them as well but, they do a great job on their own as well.

When I first got them I had an issue with one only playing high frequencies and nothing below probably 600kHz. But I had just moved just a few weeks after I got them and that was most likely the problem. Be cautious just in case. Lucky enough I had a warranty with it outside of the stores initial 30 day policy. Other than that I don't think I'd recommend them enough.
